GLE [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLE (W167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
I am just trying to imagine how a Chinese interior will look after it's driving a quarter of a million miles @Rolf

The Mercedes looks as good as new that's for sure.
Yes, good question my friend. I am still skeptical about the Chinese car's longevity. Initially buyers could be wowed by their interiors but over a long period of time, I also have some doubts whether they are long lasting as any Mercedes or other German cars. That GLE interior looks amazing for a car that has done nearly 350k km.

I wonder what he does for a living putting that much mileage on an AMG.
Why bother selling it now? Just keep going until the wheels fall off.

Rolf, I live in a country that's jam packed with Chinese cars and Chinese electric cars and I can tell you this:

-When comes to resale time, nobody wants them. No mechanic wants to touch them either.

Their quality and dealer service is an absolute shambles. China started selling cars in Brazil in the early 2010's and pretty much the vast majority of them have been scrapped or simply abandoned on the streets.

Trust me, they are JUNK and if anybody disagrees with me, go ahead and put your money where your cocksucking mouth is. Go on... trade in your BMW for a BYD. What are you waiting for? Some encouragement? f#ck off. Be gone. Buy f#ckity bye.

I didn't even realize it, but MBUSA has quietly added a non AMG, GLE 450 Coupe to their lineup.

This is going to be good. Subtle on the already great outside and a new dash, exactly what it needed pretty much.

Probably a version that supports both.
I would wager they'll do the same thing they're doing with the regular E. MRA2 PHEV and MB.EA-L BEV, both with similar sheet metal to keep the differences minimal, but the underpinnings will be purpose-built for each powertrain.

I think Merc are working on improving their 48V hybrid set-up so even non-PHEVs can drive some distance on EV power alone. That should give MRA2 some additional longevity in the face of more restrictions.

Nah, MMA platform (CLA and such) is on a convergence platform. Everything bigger is going on the dedicated MB.EA EV platform with a ICE counterpart on MRA II platform.

Interesting. The upcoming new X5 is on such a convergence platform.

Mercedes and BMW have decidedly different approaches. BMW wants to keep the architecture costs as low as possible it seems, and make sure the EVs are indistiguishable from the ICE cars.

Meanwhile Mercedes is min-maxxing a bit to make sure the benefits of each powertrain tech are maximally utilised.

So far, it seems BMW's approach has seen more success, given the poor response to the EQ line. But we'll see how it goes going forward.

BMW will this year launch the iX3 with is on a completely new EV platform compared to the CLAR based X3, as you're probably aware of.
So the strategy isn't actually all that different wouldn't you say? They're doing the exact same thing only for different cars.

And the NK i3 will definitely not be indistinguishable compared to the ICE 3er. They will share a design theme and not more than that. They are vastly different cars as you can already clearly see in the spy pics.

Right, like the upcoming CLA

BMW's and Mercedes strategies are pretty much the same if you ask me. Like it always is.

Hmm, I guess I completely forgot about NK lol.
I guess the longer wheelbase CLAR/NK divide won't be ready for a few more years.

I don't know how scalable that EV platform they're using for that AMG SUV is, and for what other cars they're going to use it.

I also don't know if the NK platform is also made for BMW's big cars like the 5er and 7er. All I know is that the new X5 will be a CLAR only platform, whereas the new GLE seems to be getting two platforms going by @Serpens .

So the next S class will have two platforms?

Its on AMG.EA, which is all we know. Both the 4-door and the SUV being on that electric architecture. Both will be large, so I guess that platform is suited to bigger bodies. Time will tell if they then divide that into AMG.EA-L and M the same way Mercedes have done MB.EA.

My suspicion is, AMG are making AMG.EA only for the larger SUVs and Sedans so they can offset the carbon from their dedicated ICE sports car. So perhaps we may yet see proper light-weight race-focused sports cars based on MSA in the future, once those EVs are out. We'll see I suppose.

For now it seems the NK is squarely 3 series or X3 series sized only. I'm guessing they will want to do that for the 5er and 7er and respective X models too in the future, but that remains to be seen.

So the next S class will have two platforms?
I believe so yes.
The W223 generation is having its lifecycle extended into 2030s while MB.EA-L is brought up. Then when the EA-L S-class is released, it'll be at the same time as the next MRA2 S-class, both with (hopefully) similar styling. At least that's what the rumours are saying anyway. Again, we'll see.

So the next S class will have two platforms?

Right.

Manufacturers always make contingency plans and with Ola's proclamation of being EV only by 2030 being obsolete, they're on to plan B. That means the larger platforms (and to be accurate the GLE and GLS are on MHA platform) will live on in heavily updated form for quite some time to come.

I'm personally most interested to see how they will style each variant. The upcoming C-class EV had its styling frozen long ago, the S-class EV will likely be the first one to show us the future.
