They mention 'Replace the GL'. They mean renew it right? Unless hopefully the facelift is going to be a big transformation to make it truly worthy of the 'S' moniker. I doubt it though.

True, may happen in steps. MB's new director of sales Ola Källenius explained it in a recent interview thusly:

"And as Auto Motor und Sport had written, the GL is the S-Class in the SUV category. Logically it will become the GLS now."

With regard to the alleged Mercedes-Maybach GLS, he mentioned "there are no plans at present." Which doesn't exclude potential future plans to speculate about, then perhaps based on the next GLS / S-Class generation.

Maybach Crossover: Luxury for off-road

DaimlerChrysler is rumored to be planning an offroad variant of the noble Maybach sedan for the autumn of 2005. Six persons can be placed into a 5.40 meter shortened platform according to the magazine "the new automobile". As engine serves the well-known twelve-cylinder, whose power will be throttled down to approximately 500 hp. The torque of the sedan of 900 Newtonmeters is to be limited to around 700 Newtonmeters, more than 500 lb-ft.

The Maybach SUV also receives a self-supporting chassis with special reinforcements in form of a light, but highly rigid auxiliary frame. With pneumatic cushioning the clearance automatically adapts to the offroad conditions depending on the speed and the selected operating mode. Due to these enhancements and refinements the price will exceed the Maybach 57. The base price of the Maybach Crossover is to be around $370.000. (mid)

Based on the next gen GL, I hope. The current one is a modded ML and simply not good enough for this treatment, imho

They have styling models of an SUV and a smaller Maybach model. Some RR clients were invited to see them many years ago. The outline of the 53 apparently has similarities with the current S-Klasse.

I found one trying to sneak around the UA campus last night. I was so excited, it's the first time I'd ever seen a prototype/pre-production test car on the road.

Edit: I played around with the image a little and brightened it up some.

Thanks! Yeah, I didn't really have any luck in Spartanburg. I did see a camo'ed X4 inside the factory, but it was on the other side of the production line. So I wasn't able to get a decent look at it.

Honestly, this was the first time I'd ever seen one or heard of one being seen. Personally, I wouldn't THINK they do much testing in the city of Tuscaloosa. We aren't quite as close to the plant as people think. From the outskirts of Tuscaloosa it's a solid 20 minute drive to the plant, and from the university it's probably closer to 30-40 minutes in usual traffic conditions. I'd imagine they do a lot more testing on the more private rural roads that are closer to the plant.

That would be a certainty cause if they can squeeze a V12 under the bonnet of the much smaller and older G class why not do this as well. I love the idea of a GLS 600 or even a more potent GLS 65 AMG, with 700ps V12 monster
