GLA [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (X156)

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Mercedes-Benz over two generations. It is essentially the SUV equivalent of the A-Class, and the smallest SUV marketed by the brand.
It's an amazingly funky looking little cross over. It will be more popular than the CLA IMO. This time next year in the U.S. the new C and this GLA will be riding high. I've said it before, but the S and the GLA are the best resolved examples of the current Mercedes design language. The CLS is the least successful and the SL is just not right at all. The production S Coupe is the next one up.

Agreed. The GLA should sell well in the US.
The CLA shape just doesn't work for me. The dropping line is to steep towards the rear. The concept version was much more fluid. It looks terrible in silver color. The dropping line looks much less steep on the GLA. Also works better with the SUV 5-door look IMO. Wouldn't mind seeing a hatch version of the CLA.

The reverse side line is one of the best design feature of the new design language. It gives such a powerful stance to the new S and the C as well as the GLA here. I find this new design language more and more flamboyant as I see new models emerging from the Mercedes stable and this is the design aspect that is quite absent in the modern car design. The S coupe concept is the most flamboyant of all Mercedes imo. I also like the CLS from this perspective which is the older car here from previous generation. Only the CLA is disappointing maybe because of the shorter dimensions. The 1950s and 60s were the times of real modern flamboyance in the automotive design of both American and European origins. The new S65 with all the artwork, I mean the chrome work is also a welcome return of decoration although a bit out of place in current fashion and hence to some, look odd.

Oh this thread is about GLA and I like this mini sport SUV a lot, more than the current or previous generation SUV from Mercedes except the amazing G class which I find the best SUV design of all time.

It will be in production for quite a while before it comes to the U.S. a little under a year from now. Between this and the new C I don't see how Mercedes can miss. I think 2015 could be the year they catch Audi worldwide.

Daimler just released a LOT of GLA info. Hope the suspension section is not too confusing? :)

Mercedes-Benz GLA Suspension: The right set-up for every use

With the new GLA Mercedes-Benz is adding a new member to the successful SUV family. This compact model reinterprets the SUV concept in a new, modern way, because the GLA is less long-legged and imposing than previous SUVs, and therefore fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle. There are three chassis and suspension set-ups to choose from.

The chassis of the GLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multi-link rear suspension. Three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel manage the incoming forces. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are independent of one another. The wheel carriers and spring control arms are made of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. In the versions with 4MATIC, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort.

In all there are three chassis and suspension set-ups to choose from:
  • In the standard-fit comfort suspension the setting of the McPherson double-tube shock absorbers has been selected so that the tension and compression forces at the front axle are at a ratio of 3:1. This reduces the dynamic wheel load fluctuations, benefiting the driving dynamics and driving safety of the vehicle. Small rolling and pitching motions and a reduced tendency to understeer at higher levels of lateral acceleration additionally improve vehicle control.
  • The lowered suspension (in combination with the AMG Line1 or the Dynamic Handling package) combines agility with ride comfort. Compared with the standard suspension the springs and dampers feature firm and sporty tuning and the level of the car is lowered by 15 millimetres. This reduces rolling motions and enhances driving stability.
  • With the off-road comfort suspension (optional) the body is raised by 30 mm. This results in improved off-road capability owing to higher ground clearance, a higher seat position and more striking off-roader looks. This suspension variant also features a distinctive steering system set-up.
Compared to conventional systems, the electromechanical Direct-Steer system provides better feedback to the driver and makes an important contribution to the vehicle's overall efficiency, as the servo assistance only requires energy when steering actually takes place. It also allows various steering assistance functions that are initiated by the ESP®control unit. These include countersteering when the vehicle oversteers, steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip, reducing the effects of front-wheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber.

As an optional extra, in the Dynamic Handling package a Sports Direct-Steer system with speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio is available. The ratio of the Sports Direct-Steer system in straight-ahead position is the same as that of the basic steering system, and becomes around 20 percent more direct between 5 and 90 degrees steering angle. Straight-line stability is thus retained and agility and manoeuvrability are even further enhanced. Comfort during manoeuvring likewise is improved as the full steering angle already is reached with 1.2 turns of the steering wheel.

With all engine variants the GLA features disc brakes all round. The floating callipers on the rear axle as well as the brake booster are made of aluminium. An especially convenient feature is the HOLD function familiar from the larger model series: when stopping, for example at traffic lights, the driver merely has to press the brake pedal slightly more firmly once to keep the brake engaged until moving off again. The brake is released automatically when the driver steps on the accelerator. In versions with manual transmission the Hill-Start Assist function is able to automatically prevent the vehicle from rolling back unintentionally when moving off on an uphill slope.

The GLA is equipped with an electric parking brake, which operates by means of actuator motors acting on the callipers of the rear axle. The parking brake is activated via a button under the light switch on the left of the dashboard, freeing up space on the centre console where the handbrake lever would normally be. If the button is pressed when travelling faster than 4 km/h, the parking brake functions as an emergency brake: all four wheel brakes are activated by the ESP® hydraulic unit. In conjunction with the 7G-DCT automatic transmission, the parking brake offers a particularly convenient mode of functioning: when the driver accelerates sufficiently after fastening his seat belt, the parking brake is released automatically.

1The AMG Line is also available with comfort suspension and without Sports Direct-Steer system. In addition, the AMG Line can also be had with the off-road comfort suspension.

Mercedes has really responded to criticism of the A and CLA ride quality by making the AMG line available with both the comfort and off road suspension set ups. Good to know they are listening to the market and responding quickly. They used to take years previously to modify something as simple as a cup holder.

I hope the U.S. market CLA gets some tweaking for the 2015 MY. Better ride, more noise insulation, and some better interior trim in key places.

Agree with you Marcus. But I think road noise may be a tire specific issue. My aunt's CLA is impressively quiet and refined. It's only on grated concrete surfaces does road noise become apparent.

Agreed. Autoweek and Edmunds noted the new setup. :)

But arguably more impressive is how AMG chassis engineers delivered a comfortable ride without adversely affecting handling: The GLA 45 uses the CLA 45's same basic MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, but the small SUV gets a little more wheel travel thanks to its higher ride height and slightly softer springs and dampers. There is greater shock absorption over potholes, and less severe rebound, so the ride feels more settled.

It adds standard 17-inch wheels fitted with taller all-weather tires, a hill descent function that automatically applies the brakes on steep descents and the ability to send up to 100 percent of its power to either the front or rear wheels. The suspension is also recalibrated to deliver a respectable 8 inches of ground clearance, which makes the GLA look less like a hatchback and more like a capable SUV.

We tried it on some rocky terrain and it happily traverses trails and loose gravel roads without feeling overly fragile or vulnerable. Whether you like it for its looks or its capabilities, the GLA fitted with the off-road package is uniquely appealing.

Yeah that seems to be the case when I rode in one while a friend went a test drive. Problem is the ride was too stiff IMO. The car needs some small refinements to move closer to its siblings IMO.
