GLA [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (X156)

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Mercedes-Benz over two generations. It is essentially the SUV equivalent of the A-Class, and the smallest SUV marketed by the brand.
These are going to sell like hotcakes. I don't see how Mercedes is going to keep up with the demand though. They're going to increase production for the CLA and add the GLA at the same time, look for big numbers.

Mercedes-Benz GLA will be made in China from 2015

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class will be made in China from late 2015. The GLA will be manufactured by the Beijing-Benz joint venture. The Mercedes-Benz GLA will compete head-to-head with the locally made Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The GLA will be available with 122hp or 156hp 1.6 turbo and a 211hp 2.0 turbo.

The GLA is currently not available in China. Imports will start in the second half of this year and will continue until local production starts. The Beijing-Benz joint venture also makes the Mercedes-Benz E-Class L, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class L, and the Mercedes-Benz GLK.

That is good news, as Chinese demand has created lots of problems for other markets. Particularly the US.
Any truth in the rumon to build the GLA in Mexico?

"The automakers provided no more details but just-auto considers the most likely models are the Infiniti QX30 in 2017 and Mercedes GLB in 2018 with other MFA 2 architecture-based models to follow. The next generation M-B GLA is also a possibility but some years off as the first generation's only recently been launched."

Mercedes GLA-Class Gets Entry-Level 1.5-Liter Diesel Engine

While Mercedes-Benz keeps the flavors of GLA-Class crossover it offers in America to a minimum, the same can't be said about its European lineup. There, diversity has always been the key to selling more cars. That's why this September, the German automaker will start offering a new base model of its MFA-based adventure vehicle, powered by a familiar Renault-sourced engine.

We are of course talking about the GLA 180 CDI, packing the same four-cylinder offered in the A- and B-Class. Received as part of the Daimler-Renault alliance, this mill propels the car to the sound of 109 PS available at 4,000rpm. Peak torque of 260 Nm comes in at 1,750rpm and is available up until 2,500rpm. Since the small engine produces so little power, it's not offered with all-wheel drive, but you can chose between a 6-speed manual or the optional 7-speed DCT.

Performance is not exactly inspiring, with 0 to 100 km/h taking 12 seconds and a top speed of only 190 km/h (6-manual model). However, fuel economy is pretty good, with a claimed 4.0 l/100km in combined driving, dropping slightly to 3.9 l/100 km with the optional 7G-DCT dual clutch.

In terms of overall cost, the new GLA 180 CDI model is the cheapest diesel model you can buy at €30,553 (available for order in Germany, configurator here). However, at this price, Mercedes will offer only steel wheels with hub caps and standard halogen headlights.

At first glance, this new entry-level model is right only for the badge-conscious, as VW Deutschland can sell you a Tiguan with either a 140 PS 2-liter diesel or a 1.4 TSI with 160 PS and DSG for a lot less money. However, brand new cars are often more expensive during the first half year after the launch, so given a year or so, the 180 could begin to make sense.

Renault is a piss poor example of automotive engineering. It's outright crap, and Mercedes should have their head examined. Didn't they learn anything from the Chrysler debacle. In that case Chrysler benefited by the association and MB suffered greatly. Still recovering from that mess.

Mercedes GLA-Based Coupe Crossover Possible, Says R&D Chief

Depending on how successful Mercedes-Benz’s new coupe crossover based on the Concept Coupe SUV is, we could see the German automaker launch more of the style-oriented vehicles including one based on the latest GLA-Class. The first, tipped to be called an MLC, will be based on the bones of the M-Class SUV and hit the market late next year. It is expected to look similar to the Concept Coupe SUV and will be produced at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

While we’ve heard similar vehicles could be launched that share their underpinnings with the GLK-Class and even the GL-Class, in an interview with Automotive News (subscription required), Mercedes R&D chief Thomas Weber said the GLA-Class platform could also get the coupe crossover treatment.

Weber explained that Mercedes was looking to launch a whole line of “on-road” crossovers that will be aimed at buyers seeking a vehicle that combines the sporty look of a coupe with the high seating position of an SUV.

Close rival BMW initiated the segment with its X6 and has recently revealed a smaller X4 model. The automaker is also alleged to be working on an even smaller X2, which the GLA-based coupe crossover would compete with. A similar strategy is being implemented at Audi, which predicts that 45 percent of its sales will be made up of crossover and SUV models by the end of the decade.

Hmmm, interesting grille, angular headlights. Makes me wonder if the next E class will have that kind of angular style for grille/headlights. Remember this?

I don't want to sound like a Renault fanboy, but their engines are anything but crap. Obviously you have never tried a dCi engine... they're easily among best in class, and more refined than Daimler's own 4 pot diesels.
You simply can't compare Renault's engineering to Chrysler, they have been producing top F1 engines for years, were the first company to achieve a 5 star car in the euro Ncap, have a great development of electric cars, etc. Chrysler has not achieved anything in the last 30 years.....

Having said that... do I like the Renault-Daimler alliance? Nop, I would have prefered Daimler partnering with BMW, to keep everything very german, unlike Renault and Toyota respectively, but sadly, that's how it goes.
