GLA [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (X156)

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Mercedes-Benz over two generations. It is essentially the SUV equivalent of the A-Class, and the smallest SUV marketed by the brand.
No GLA available as their 250 sold a few days before I was going to have a drive. Did have a brief drive of an update A250 with 18 inch wheels. There is definitely an improvement in initial harshness in comfort mode. The short travel suspension is still a concern though. That's where I'd hope the GLA would be superior on rode comfort. I still haven't been able to try one yet though.
I certainly noticed an improvement in the gearbox in the new A250. I believe there have been significant software changes. It does appear to be smoother at slow speeds around town but also responds much more readily to lighter throttle applications.
Have these changes been passed on to the GLA (like the minor interior updates and adaptive damping suspension from the A Class have been)? The engine has not been updated yet so I'm assuming the gearbox software wouldn't have been?
I'm leaning more towards the GLA. I was hoping the adaptive suspension would have made a significant improvement in ride quality. I was wanting to get the 19's (as I'm not a fan of the new 18's on the A250) with the adaptive suspension but I think I'll end up with the same problem. I know the GLA has runflats but they ride on 19 inch / 45 profile instead of 35 on the A class.
Could any owners give me some feedback?

Hi Iain.

Runflats on 19 are fine. It's only on the very worst of roads that you will feel the harshness of the runflats.
I was a bit concerned initially but it's fine, and mine is a 2014 model.

In New York a GLA 250 4MATIC was shown on the lower level, in designo Mountain Grey Magno (matte finish) and with halogens. :)

Nice paint! It still mystifies me, however, that Germans continue to use halogens in their cars in 2016?! LED's should be standard equipment.

^ They may have forgotten to spec it. Could also be one reason why it was delegated to the lower level. :)

The lower level at the NYC show is for SUVs, trucks and aftermarket. Most companies like Lexus, BMW, MB, Toyota etc, have secondary displays in the basement area with all their trucks and SUVs. In years past GM has had a whole hall to themselves. I just can't wait to get there next week.

Thankfully no more halogens in any new Mercedes in my country. And boy, they have been selling A and GLAs by the bucket load. They are everywhere, so are the new C and GLC.

A new trim AMG Microfiber DINAMICA Black with code H92 becomes available in the new model year for the GLA and CLA in combination with the AMG Line. :)

RUMOR: Updated GLA GETS 360 DEGREE CAMERA

With the facelift of the Mercedes-Benz GLA of the X156 model series the compact class will receive a 360 degree camera for the first time, according to current rumors. The update is expected to arrive at the dealerships in April 2017 and towards the end of 2016 it may be shown for the first time - possibly in December.

GLA X156 - facelift arrives in 2017 at the dealers

The X156 model upgrade may sport a more pronounced SUV design, including not only new telematics but also a 360-degree camera system - which would be a first of its kind in the compact car series from Mercedes-Benz. Neither the CLA nor B, or A-class received such a system with the facelift, the GLA is the last model of this generation, which may then become available at the dealerships starting in April 2017.

A-Class - new generation as W177 arrives in 2018

For the Mercedes-Benz A-Class the next generation will arrive in 2018 and may debut as W177 about one year after the facelift of the GLA. We expect a lot of the technology from the current W213 E-Class - which will then be used for the first time in the compact series. Conceivable are, for example, a variant of the wide screen cockpit, a Head-Up Display and the introduction of multi-beam LED headlights. In the fall of 2018 an A-class sedan could follow.

For confirmations of the GLA facelift, as well as officially confirmed details of the next generation of the new W177 A-Class one may still have to wait several months.

The GLA is supposed to show more SUV character with the facelift, e.g. it may sport the new two louvre SUV grille from the E-Class All-Terrain, according to MB Passion. :)

The next A-class and GLA need more powerful 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines to make them much more competitive. The new OM654 2.0ltr diesel should be included and also the 2.0ltr petrol engine from C-class and E-class.

The problem with the GLA is that the proportions are not that of an SUV. They are of a hatchback on stilts. The market wants a proper SUV. That's why the Audi Q3 continues to outsell the GLA, despite it being quite long in the tooth.

Yes, for the next generation new engines are planned, although not for the update which may be revealed later this year. The Renault engines may be retained as they are much more popular than anticipated. :)

The engine range will benefit from the addition of Mercedes’ latest OM654 diesel units, known from their debut in the E-Class. Measuring 2.0 liters in capacity, the new diesel units will be offered with at least two different power outputs. The same goes for the petrol engines, where the new A-Class will use a series of turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-litre units from the company’s M254 family, adding a new A 40 AMG model to sit between the A 250 and A 45 AMG versions with around 280 to 300hp. By the way, the hot 45 AMG version is expected to reach or even surpass the 400hp mark.

The sub-2lt petrol and diesel engines will continue to be provided by Renault. Mercedes is also going to replace the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox with a nine-speed version of it, which will be able to handle more torque and improve the performance of the new compact model.

Yes, it may not qualify as a true SUV, albeit quite popular. The numbers could also be production limited as MB may be running the lines at full throttle? :)

Interestingly enough, here in the U.S. that hasn't been the case. The GLA outsells the Q3 by a large amount. And we hate hatchbacks.
