Very interesting discussion! Thanks for the insight gentlemen.

Do you think acoustic glass would reduce the road noise generated by large tires, or is it more just a reduction of wind noise? The road noise would be entering the cabin from other areas correct?

Most cars in Australia don't have acoustic glass fitted, but then we only travel up to 120km max (legally).
The S-class has an acoustic wheel well. Does the EQS have this ? I need to go look.

Not sure. It hasn't landed down under.

Our S-class is supposed to have acoustic glass fitted to it, according to the specification guide. I have noted however it does not have it and I am pressing the dealership to find out why and to make them fit it. Because the rest of the car is so damn quite (it's truly impressive) you get the very slightest wind rustle at about 110km/h.

I think MB Germany deliberately didn't fit the acoustic glass because every W223 I have seen here does not have it. They must have had a parts shortage and exercised their right to 'modify specifications without notice'.

I mentioned the diameter because the AMG EQS has a smaller tire sidewall, which does indeed cause more noise in many instances. Regardless, I didn’t even mention the more aggressive tread pattern that comes with performance tires.
Testcar tyres:
EQS 275/35 R 22 Y Michelin Pilot Sport EV
S 255/45 R 19 Y Pirelli P Zero

Even so, bottomline is, BEV aren’t as silent as people are trying to make you believe and certainly not less noisy than an ICE.

I’m seeing them on the road now. You have no idea what it is upon first seeing it in traffic.

Have you noticed any wind rustle on your W223 test Mick?
Very little. At speeds up to 130 km/h it’s quiete like in a monastery. At higher speeds, > 180 km/h, of course you notice it, decent in the background. As I’ve written before, W223 is even more silent than than my W222; and that’s already cocoon-like.

Just a note- the acoustic comfort package actually includes more than just the glass. Given that extra noise insulation is included elsewhere in the car with that package I believe it all would contribute to less road and wind noise.

Sound insulation of EQS is indeed subpar. Even a Porsche Macan on 21” 295/35 performance tyres, non separated rear trunk, being a sporty mid sized SUV, not really known for it’s silent interior, manages to reach the exact same level of interior noise at 80 km/h, 100 km/h and 130 km/h, as the EQS. A blamage, I’d say.

Seems E tron betters EQS!

In fairness, if they're tested on different road surfaces the numbers aren't really comparable. Road surface type, and age, can more significantly affect the level of noise being generated. 6-7dB difference would appear to be easy to achieve with different grades of asphalt.

I also note the deviation occurring in his measurements...

... in just the 26 seconds of the recording in the e-Tron, he's seeing 2dB variance in all three speed ranges. This is not to discredit him, just to point out that a couple of dB difference in the test results being discussed probably doesn't translate to much in the real world.

Thank you, was going to post something similar. Comparison tests when cars are tested at the same time under the same conditions are necessary.

More of the hype, yes.
I don’t know what others look for in car vlogs but I seek videos of cars I like and am a fan of anyway. I do not expect any sort of objectivity or education; I just want to see the car be shown, driven, and captured in as entertaining a way as possible. Yes, MercBenzKing is no car journalist, rather a fan of the brand that is lucky to get access and make a living at it. I expect nothing more from him. Shmee150 may appear a tad more objective but I just find his content to dilutive with so many brands. Being a Mercedes and BMW fan in general, I gravitate more toward Remove Before Race, sometimes MercBenzKing, etc. As for unbiased advice, I find Carwow and Autotrader quite informative while also entertaining.

As far as German-language reviews go, I like those presented by Jessica Thön on Car Crash Review. Chris Karatsonyi's Car Maniac is also a good source of info.

As far as English-language reviews go, Henry Catchpole of Carfection is informative as well as entertaining. I don't find Shmee150 bad at all. Auto Trader is quite good, as is The Late Brake Show. Carwow is a "no go" for me.

db is not the only factor to determine if a car is loud or silent. Same thing for aerodynamics with cd. It’s too general as a measurement.

It became a car that made itself loved more and more over time. The i7 is beautiful but not sophisticated.
