Yes, might have something to do with construction costs. Here's a video where tight MB shutlines of only 0.8 mm were mentioned -- and he says: "We didn't get it without a fight." But it was the S. :)

I don`t understand what he talking about at 3:43 - did he saw last S class? Not to mention some other cars in this thread....or maybe I am wrong about his point?

Ok, understood (and I am not angry btw) but I do not buy into this logic.
Saying the W212 is a step back from the W211 is a misunderstanding. The W212 possessed a rather angular theme in its design language. This was simply reflected in the interior design with its angular themes. The W212 would not have looked right with a rounded interior design as the W211 E-Class.
The switchgear and ergonimics in the W212 is more modern feeling and I believe a step ahead of the W211 E-Class.

Agree having been obsessed with the W211 and as I owned three w211s E500,E55,E63 and now driving a 2013 W212 E63 bi turbo think i can qualify that the interior is a gen head in the w212 it just a more angular theme compared the rounded style of the w211.

Fantastic vid with the lead designer explaining the car. Never saw that, and I must admit there's some amazing details one would never know without owning the car. Things like the water management of the A pillar and how it makes sure the driver's side window stays completely dry when driving 140 km/h though the rain on the Autobahn. Is this really the case @Mick Briesgau ?
Yes, it's true. Always 100% of the time absolutely dry it isn't. Driving slow on a rainy day, wind from the side, it gets a bit wet. What's also great, is the fact that the rearmirrors (outside) don't get wet or raindrops on it. Mercedes-Benz often has these kind of engineering finesse.

5. Mercedes spent two and a half years designing the sedan’s seats. Herring says it took that long to figure out how to make them larger, wider, more comfortable, but also lighter.

I can see MB getting rid of the COMAND controller for those touch pads on the steering wheel, but what about when passengers want to control the COMAND system?

^ Perhaps the E may also get a COMAND remote standard in the Mercedes-Maybachs and optional in the S? It's option code 816. :)

True, but how many will get lost/stolen. MB will make a fortune selling those to the used car market.
Unless you can get universal remote :D

Again, I was talking about the design, not the quality of the switchgear or functionality. Saying it's a step back cannot be a misunderstanding, because design is purely subjective.

Earth to klier, I am talking about the design as well. It cannot be that hard to understand. Unless it is.

Winner for sure. Was there anything about an U.S. market E400?

Didn't see anything yet. The E 400 they tested in California was a European model apparently. :)

As is typical, the new E-class will offer a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines internationally, but the choices will be more limited in the United States. Expect an E300, an E450 AMG SPORT, and the monster Mercedes-AMG E63 S with about 600 horsepower. Mercedes plans to once again offer a diesel version, as well, and a plug-in hybrid could be added down the road. Eventually, there will be hybrids with an integrated starter-generator based on a 48-volt electrical architecture.

Quality has reached new heights with the new E-Class. The rear seat is now much more roomy and comfortable for tall individuals. The new color might be the most metallic I've seen on black paint.

Smudge marks everywhere.

The new Comand is the best iteration of automotive infotainment I've used in any vehicle, in terms of visual quality and the convenience of the steering wheel scrollers. MB still loves to overdo sub-menus, but that's a minor criticism.

Talking about quality, has anybody here already sat inside and felt the materials and assembly. A TV show in France (Turbo on M6) complained a little about that (thin plastics that move and create some gaps for instance) ?

The center console looks amazing without the black shiny trim.

Hopefully this will soon be available on the other E class models too. And with more options like wood too.

These two pics look amazing. Huge win here for MB. After the terrible W212, this W213 just makes things right.

Agree about the 212 ..a friend just asked for advice about buying a used 2014 e350 and I couldn't help but steer him towards a 16/17 c300. Despite some of the initial quality reports it represents the " new" mb and just feel it's a better car overall. As for the 213 I'll be at nyias today. If I can get clean shots will add some to the site . Happy to see mb building to quality and certain other ideals rather than more to a price (220/203 etc)
