E-Class (W213/C238/A238) [Official] Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213

The Mercedes-Benz W213 is the fifth generation of the E-Class range. It succeeded the W212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models (C238/A238) share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. Production: February 2016–2023. Model years: 2017–2023.
Testing in Sweden. :)

2018 Mercedes-Maybach E-Class Spied

After Mercedes-Benz invested close to €1 billion in the development of the mid-cycle facelift of the W212, the German manufacturer upped the ante even further with the unveiling of the W213 model. The fifth generation of the E-Class is a great leap forward in its segment. One of the most curious aspects about the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is that a Maybach-branded model is coming.

You’ve heard that right. The pick of the bunch will be out of most people’s reach, but look at the size of the rear doors. Our spy photographers caught the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach E-Class testing in snowy Sweden and the dominant characteristic comes in the form of a longer wheelbase compared to the regular E-Class.

That said, the Maybach treatment has two more tricks up its sleeve. The first comes in the form of an ultra-luxurious cabin. A lot of money can be spent on the standard E-Class to turn the interior into an office on wheels, but the Maybach will bring more exclusive goodies. These include added sound deadening for a serene rear seat experience, high-quality wood and metal trim, as well as soft Nappa leather with Maybach crests embossed on the headrests.

As for the second trick, the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach E-Class will get an array of gadgets tailored for the jet set. Look forward to a superior air filtration system, cup holders with Peltier technology for cooling or warming drinks, and a high-fidelity Burmester 3D surround sound system with tweeters that can twirl out from the rear door panels toward the passengers in a graceful spiral motion.

On the powertrain front, the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach E-Class is expected to come with the engine from the range-topping E 400 4Matic. More specifically, a 6-cylinder twin-turbo with either 333 horsepower (245 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) or 367 horsepower (270 kW) and 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of get-up-and-go to all four wheels. Either that or the 4.0-liter V8 in the upcoming E 500 model. Sorry, folks, but a 4-cylinder or a turbo diesel are not on this Maybach's agenda.

@Wolfgang, what do you think, is there any chance an E-Maybach is coming to Europe/Germany?
I'd say this Extra LWB E Class would do well in some austerity-hit European countries where being seen in a S Class Maybach is frowned upon.

Yes, agreed, there's a chance the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class might be offered globally. :)

The Maybach edition will offer improved legroom and upgraded interiors with subtle design modifications on the outside, and will be available globally, unlike the long-wheelbase version which is only expected in select countries and will be priced at a premium over the standard.

MB Passion is not yet convinced, though. :)

For Germany we expect the T-Model and the E-Class Cabriolet and Coupe, while the long version of the E-Class we only expect in China - even a Maybach variant we do not currently anticipate.

I wonder why car manufacturers don't opt for the anodized aluminium instead of piano black finish for center consoles and buttons - think of the Apple's iPod Shuffle surface, or Apple's Trackpad. It is very fingerprint resistant, yet looks luxurious.

Surely, it can be done in basic colors - what's more, if Apple could do it in dozens of colors, so can car manufacturers.

Does anyone know if a 4matic variant will come to the UK? It looks like the E400 4matic will not arrive here, but will the E43 and/or E63 be made available as 4matic in the UK?

Ideally I'd love the E350d to be available with 4matic but I don't see that happening. I do a lot of miles and the mpg of the E43 would be nowhere near as good as the E350d, although if that's the only 4matic option I think I would take the plunge and go for it.

It's also about availability for me. I'd love to go and order the E350d right now, but if 4matic and more engine choices are just around the corner (people are reporting June???), I'd rather hold off until then. Plus, there should be more choice by then hopefully as the only leather option in the AMG Line here is black.

Finally, does anyone know if there is a "Sun Pack"? My current W212 E350 has a button that puts up the sunblind on the rear window and the rear side windows have manual sunblinds also. I can't see this option on the UK Configurator.

Mercedes-Benz’s new COMAND touchpad controller mysteriously appears in the new W213 E-Class

Mercedes-Benz released a massive press kit with details, photos and videos of the new W213 E-Class earlier this week. This is in conjunction with the international press drive event currently on-going, which our man Anthony Lim will be attending next week.

While trawling through the contents, we noticed something odd about this particular photo, which is meant to demonstrate an automated parking feature called Park Pilot. The COMAND controller was not the usual rotary dial with a touch pad palm rest floating on top of it.

It appears to be the new COMAND touch pad controller that we first saw in spyshots of the W222 S-Class facelift. You can compare the new controlled next to the current COMAND controller in the two images below.

The new controller is of course lower in terms of height, so it eliminates the current ergonomics issue where in a right hand drive car, the driver would have less visibility of the buttons to the left of the COMAND dial, which so happen to all be driving related – we’re talking about buttons like the DYNAMIC SELECT switch and 360 view camera buttons in the case of the E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz have basically taken the current floating touch pad and flattened it. They’ve also moved the back, option and ‘star’ shortcut buttons to the front of the touch pad instead, which is an improvement in terms of ergonomics since you don’t have to lift up your palm to access them in their rear position now.

But is a touch pad better than a rotary knob? I currently have the knob plus touchpad system in my car and I find that the rotary knob is easier to use while you’re driving. But one plus point of the new system would be that the palm rest would go back to being a more comfortable leather one instead of a hard touch pad.

Finally, does anyone know if there is a "Sun Pack"? My current W212 E350 has a button that puts up the sunblind on the rear window and the rear side windows have manual sunblinds also. I can't see this option on the UK Configurator.

Yes, that's listed with option code P09 on mercedes-benz.de. It can't be combined with the rear heat reducing dark glass, option 840, though. :)
