E-Class (W213) [Official] Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.

Anyone know what this key is for?

Yeah Car and Driver said that too about the E's ride quality. That would KILL the segment for people who want a luxury car first, but C&D also said that the E handles better also. Win-win. The only problems are the shiny center console and the E43's dumb name. Me personally I'd wait until next year when the I6 comes online. Maybe by then Mercedes will have heard enough complaints to change the center console over to another material.

I still find the facelifted W212 headlight shape and size more attractive.

Agreed. The facelifted W212 headlamp design looks better and a bit more creative than the W213 design, maybe because the new one is so overly used on almost every model by now. Mercedes should have waited to put those headlamps on W213. The car would still have had that family resemblance Mercedes is so craving for.

Can't wait for the first drives. The initial reports from CAR that the ride quality was superior to the S sounded incredibly promising.
That I find very hard to believe. Unless they mean ride quality in a sporty sense. In a comfort sense....unlikely. Must have a drive in this car as soon as possible to feel it's drive myself.

I think they must be comparing the ride quality of the new E-Class with standard tires and that of a runflat-tire equipped S-Class. My S500 has runflat tires and the ride quality is superb. Seems like the new E-Class is quite something.

We take a ride in the new 2016Mercedes E-Class executive saloon as it prepares to take on the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6
The camouflage stickers aren’t fooling anyone; the disguised car is obviously a Mercedes-Benz. Proportionally it’s bigger than the C-Class, even though it shares a recognisable theme. Say hello tothe new 2016 E-Class then, internally designated as W213, the code by which engineers and Mercedes enthusiasts will forever refer to it.

The new car looks softer and more elegant. Its designer, Gorden Wagener, said he wants all Mercedes-Benz saloons to have a common style: “They should all be recognisable as Mercedes-Benz limousines,” he said when speaking at last week’s LA Motor Show, and the similarities with the C-Class are obvious.

Visually, the E-Class is a diversion from the somewhat busily styled outgoing model. It isn't only its looks that are shared with the C-Class either, as the E-Class is based on the Mercedes-Benz MRA platform that features in its smaller relative as well as in the GLCSUV. In time, E-Class Coupe, Cabriolet and Estate versions with their inevitable AMG high performance spin-offs will join the family too.

Driving out of LA – on the tortured combed concrete that makes up a sizeable portion of the USA’s highways – with Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer E-Class/CLS/GLC, at the wheel is very revealing. Kelz says of the new E: “For refinement our target was the S-Class.” And the E-Class rides with a serene quietness that’s arguably better than its luxurious S-Class relation.

There is optional dual chamber air suspension underneath and Kelz underlines the importance of the car’s luxury and suppleness.

“There are plenty of engineers who can do sporty in the company,” admits the E-Class chief, “but I am focused on comfort. It’s important”. That’s not to the detriment of engagement, says Kelz, adding: “The steering has to feel natural too, I don’t like synthetic steering.”

From the passenger seat we’ll have to take Kelz’s word on that for now, but the level of driver assistance means that, depending on the route, the E-Class could be steering itself. Technologically it’s entirely feasible that the E-Class could drive fully autonomously, although legislatively it’s not presently allowed.

On the long, relatively straight roads we’re on, the E-Class is obviously an easy drive, Kelz having only to brush a button on the steering wheel when occasionally prompted, the car checking he’s still paying attention. And if he isn’t, it’ll give further warnings before slowing to a controlled stop.

Allowing the E-Class its huge arsenal of safety and driver assistance is an all-new electronic architecture, a CAN bus system that makes the E-Class the most technologically advanced car in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. It's even ahead of the new S-Class, until that car is upgraded with a development of the E’s ‘Star 2.3’ electronics.

The E-Class is set to be available with an extensive range of modular three-, four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, as well as a new four-cylinder turbodiesel, anticipated to be offered in several states of tune. All will drive via the nine-speed 9G-Tronic auto, while 4Matic four-wheel drive will be rolled out after the initial launch phase early next year. A hybrid and, at the other end of the spectrum, a bi-turbo 4.0-litre V8 E 63 AMG will also be offered.

Both examples of the new E-Class we rode in demonstrated that it promises a sizeable step in luxury over its predecessor. The design of the interior we’ve been sworn to secrecy on, though what is evident is greater passenger space, as well as a more generous luggage compartment.

The new Mercedes E-Class is set to be revealed at the Detroit Motor Show in January before sales start early next year.

Possible @Wunderkind, but even then I think the W222 is more comfortable. I've driven quite a few W212 (airmatic) and everytime thought, the W222's suspension is at least 1½-2 classes above that. If the W213 is really more comfortable than W222, that would mean an improvement of 1½-2 classes which I can hardly believe. Besides, Mercedes-Benz won't be that "stupid" to undermine S-Klasse sales.

You can't compare the Airmatic of the W212 to the new Airmatic in the W213. The W213 does offer the Air-Body-Control that is by far better than any other airsuspension that is offered in the W205 and W212.

I know, BMW3GT, the Air-Body control is far better and technically new and different. I'm sure W213 drive is better than W212s. But can't imagine it to be better than W222.

"And the E-Class rides with a serene quietness that’s arguably better than its luxurious S-Class relation." I can't believe that this is true, but I think the E-Class is close in terms of comfort to it's big brother the S-Class.

So Mick you are the one that owns an S-Class. I have never driven it and it would be awesome if you get the chance to compare the S-Class and the new E-Class with Air-Body-Control.

I hate how they renamed Airmatic - Air Body Control. If you write it in shorter form you get ABC, which could be missleading in conversations and forum readings.

Same here, I so hope this is not true. I f so, it will just take all the shine of the S-Class' magic, and is just overkill, there is simply no need,

yes I believe that the E has always been a byword for comfort and luxury, but it has so in the executive segment, and I think the current E already has a very impressive ride for the segment, only small improvements needed, nothing more.....

Sure will do :) It'll be in the showrooms overhere april, 9th. I plan a testdrive april or may. Must be an E350d to give it a fair chance. Yes, it probably comes close to the S-Klasse, closer than ever. If possible, I want to test it with the "accoustic comfort package" as well, to experience the full aroma.

Exhaust pop from the engine, not sure if it is a good thing on a non sporting E-class. Also the exterior look quite bland in that spec. Whatever happen to the over head lighting for the rear passengers?
