Very weird decision about the new engine for the E350. Maybe it will only be used in the C-class in future. This is from AMS.
MERCEDES E 350 IN THE W213 DELETED
E-Class comes without a new high-tech gasoline engine
EXCLUSIVE
Contrary to what was planned, Mercedes did without the newly developed top four-cylinder E 350 in the newly redesigned E-Class. Curious: we have already driven the new engine. Also in the E-Class.
With a view to the market launch of the face-lifted E-Class, known internally as the W 213, Mercedes sent numerous journalists out onto the road with the new four-cylinder petrol E 350 . Under the hood, the M 254 , a brand new four-cylinder with 272 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Newton meters. A high-tech combustion engine, full of innovative fuel-saving technology, including those from Formula 1. The perfect engine for a classic business sedan.
Plugin hybrids have priority
According to information from auto-motor-und-sport.de, it is precisely this top four-cylinder that will not be available to buy. Because the E 350 was deleted from the E-Class model range at very short notice. When asked, a company spokesman confirmed the end of the E 350. Reason: In the course of the production changeover, after consultation with the sales department, it was decided to "prioritize the plug-in motors (PHEV)." According to Mercedes, their demand is overwhelmingly high and sustainable, which means that the four-cylinder model range of the facelifted E-Class ends with the E 300 (258 hp) or its plug-in version E 300e (211 hp) nor the E 450 and the AMG models.
The new love of the Mercedes sales force for plug-in drives is of course also related to the strict CO2 limits that the Mercedes fleet must meet in order to avoid expensive fines to the EU. And the E 300e (41 g CO2 per kilometer) makes a significant contribution to reducing emissions.
Next attempt in the C-Class
The M 254 engine is thus celebrating its series premiere in a different series. Mercedes does not yet want to commit itself, but we assume that the next generation of the Mercedes C-Class will have a C 350 as the top engine. The new C-Class , known internally as W206, will likely be presented at the end of 2020 and will go on sale in early 2021. And for so long, everyone who has already been on the road with the E 350 can look forward to having driven an extremely rare car.
CONCLUSION
The short-term end of the Mercedes E 350 is a real loss for the E-Class model range. The engine made an extremely good impression in the first driving report from auto motor und sport and it went perfectly with the modernized E-Class. So let's wait for the C 350 and hope that it won't become a victim of the next round of CO2 savings.
