E-Class (W212/C207/A207) [Official] Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W212)

The Mercedes-Benz W212 is the fourth generation of the E-Class range. It is the successor to the W211 E-Class. Body styles: four-door sedan/saloon (W212) and five-door estate/wagon (S212). Coupé and convertible models of the W212 E-Class generation are W204 C-Class based and known as the C207 and A207, replacing the CLK-Class (C209 and A209) coupé and cabriolet. Production: March 2009 – January 2016 (sedan), December 2009 – May 2016 (station wagon).
Well I think he meant the present - future. Benz put out some excellent boxes back then, but now.....even thing should have curves. It's the new face of "Aggressive" Styling.

Exactly. Back then, most of the cars designed were boxy-no matter what bodystyle. However, with the E-Class, former Mercedes customers are more likely to associate the E-Class coupe with the CLK, which had a swoopy, curvy shape. Most of the time, only small children or cranky in-laws :D sit in the back seat of a coupe, which gives carmakers like Mercedes an opportunity to create the most curvy and swoopy design that they can. Everything depends on consumer outlook. If customers associate the shape of a coupe with a box, then that's the way that automakers will design their coupes. However, today, most people want sleek, swoopy coupes, and that's what automakers will make (that is, of course, unless the coupe is a ressurection of an iconic past model (Challenger, Camaro).

I had a chance to buy a 90 560 SEC, white with burgandy and passed because my wife was pregnant and didn't want two door.

That is still my favorite Benz.

MB has my permission to drop the curvy, bloated whale CL and bring back the boxy SEC. Bentley still builds a lovely square coupe. Of course the have a nice curvy GT as well.

On a more topical note. I wonder what the new E sedan would look like with squared wheel arches like the GLK. The rear fender treatment just doesn't do anything for me on the sedan. It looks totally out of place. I think a more subtle arch treatment like the C has, or squaring off the wheel well like the GLK would work much better.

Anyone up for photo shop efforts?

I love the C126, it's a wet dream of mine. An absolute masterpiece. Gorgeous car, just like the W126.
Sacco's most beautiful creations.

The W126 and C126 are the most beautiful of all recent Merc for me.

Mind-blowing cars, I'm just totally taken everytime I see one (in good shape and not riced out).

BTW I quite like the wheel arch of the W212, I find it really well integrated and it makes the rear lighter, more athletic.

I love the SEC too, I drool when I see one in great shape, I even thought of buying one.

That said I hope after this W212, M-B doesn't go into a boxy endeavor again. They do the swoopy and sleek thing so well. The reason I don't like the 212 is because it looks like they're trying to do a modernized 80's boxy M-B design. IMO, boxy designs look dated much faster than curvey ones, that's why whenever you hear people trying to describe an old looking car, they'd say "it looks so 80's".

I gotta see the wheel arch in person, but via pictures I'm not a fan, and it's a bit too gimmicky for M-B. I think it actually makes the back look more fat, and unnecessarily busy.

....Also, I can't remember which SUV it is, but one of these Japanese car companies have incorporated the same "Ponton" like wheel arch in one of their new ones.

Those last two black ones look horrible IMO, I don't know why they used those angles, and the lighting on the bottom black one doesn't flatter the windows/greenhouse at all. The white E63 looks nice though.

I will never understand how Mercedes-Benz could produce such an outstanding looking S-class and then completely box this car up. I was so looking for a Mid-Size S-class.

I've gotten a little better at excepting this car, but it still bothers me how they could box it up.

If you think it looks boxy in pics, and are not a fan of how overly angular it indeed is (not sure if you've seen it in person yet), then when you see one in person (especially without the AMG pack), especially next to a 211, it'll be pretty hard to swallow, at least that was my experience when seeing it. I was pretty dismayed all in all. The only acceptable way IMO it'll look is with the AMG pack, as it plays off of the cars aggressive lines, it does look good in its own way, but I still don't find it, even in that outfit, as nice as I'd hoped it would be, nor do I think it'll age too well (too jarring).

It all depends on your opinion. If you like less angular cars, then you like the old E better. If you like the way MB is going with their cars, then you probably love the new E. If you've only recently liked what the brand has been putting out (say, last 7 years), then you probabbly dont like the E. However, if you've followed the brand for a very long time, you will understand that MB is just trying to return to the "built like a tank" quality of the 80s. I've seen the E sedan in person and I have to say that many of the angular lines that stick out so well in press pictures are integrated very nicely, and you don't notice the hump over the back wheels that much.Like I said, it all depends on your taste and outlook.

Yeah I agree, it is all opinion based. I fall right into that "liking what they put out in the last 7 years" too. I've always loved M-B all my life, but since 2000 when they started going toward IMO a more elegant and almost exotic-y swoopy look is when I really knew I needed to have one. I agree about the hump over the wheels though, IMO in pictures it can look really bad and frumpy from some angles, and in person you don't really even notice it at all.

I think Mercedes is going back to the roots in term of styling. No, maybe not roots but 20 years back in time. I feel the W212 have very much in common with the W124 and not least the Ponton models W120/121.

See, IMO out of all the classics, the 80's are usually my least favourites as they're the boxiest of the bunch. The lines of that 120, and many of the older, usually 60's and down are more curvaceous and pretty IMO, which shares more of a resemblance with the last generation (before the more angular models are coming in.... which indeed draw more inspiration from the 80's) of M-B's designs. Which is another reason I think the W212 and the like won't age as well as some of the prior models, but we'll see.
