S-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz CL Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz, being positioned above the other Mercedes-Benz models.
They're probably saving the S-Coupe moniker for when they grow the S-class into a Rolls Royce/Bentley battling range of cars.

Still looks like the AMG kit is a must. I really hope that MB starts stepping up their regular designs, cuz it's getting quite annoying that if you want the better looking car, you gotta pay more for the damn AMG kit.

I think they've struck the right balance. You have to remember a lot of the CL customers are extremely conservative older folk.

It's official: It looks like the CL will stay CL.

From Edmunds Insideline:

Just the Facts:
Mercedes says its CL coupe will not be rebadged as the SL-Class Coupe for 2011.
2011 CL63 AMG uses a new twin-turbo 5.5-liter direct-injection V8 rated at 536 horsepower.
Mercedes will officially unveil the new CL lineup at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz is expected to unveil its face-lifted CL-Class coupe this fall at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, including updated versions of the CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG.

Contrary to widespread rumors in Europe, however, the company will not rebadge the CL-Class as the S-Class Coupe.

"That's incorrect," Mercedes-Benz of North America spokesman Robert Moran said in an e-mail response to a question from Inside Line. The 2011 coupe is "still CL," Moran said.

Speculation in Europe about a potential nomenclature change on the big coupe follows the company's earlier re-designation of the CLK successor as the E-Class Coupe.

The CL coupe will get a revised hood, fenders, grille, bi-xenon headlights with LED turn signals and daytime running lights, LED taillights, bumper-integrated exhaust pipes and reverse lights relocated to the deck lid, as well as some technical updates.

For the U.S. market, the 2011 CL63 AMG features a new twin-turbo 5.5-liter direct-injection V8 that makes 536 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The engine is fitted with start/stop technology and is coupled with AMG's seven-speed multi-clutch transmission.

The updated CL-Class goes on sale in November in the U.S.

Not feeling it. The current CL is stunning - this feels like a slightly forced attitude re-adjustment.

Not that this won't be stunning also - I'm just not getting the rational for these "emotive" headlights.

You have to remember a lot of the CL customers are extremely conservative older folk.

I guess you're right about that. But I would love to see a breakdown of how many people opt for the AMG package, because most of the CLs i've seen so far are have been AMG kitted.

AMG IS stunning. i cant understand which idiot wold by the CL in standard trim and not opt for the AMG Kit....they should have given the Std CL more elegance instead of ultra boring...

Hmm,
i think, we have to wait for real pics. The front light from the standard CL look sp "put-on".

Some words about "AMG" styling, i can only speak for myself.
In Germany AMG packages are not very often, the people add maybe some AMG rims or little parts from AMG. That means, if you see an Merc in this category that looks like an AMG, it is one, not a wanna-be...

The "new" look: I´m glad, that there are only minor updates, i´m sad loosing the small round lights in the front spoiler (don´t know how they are called in english). In fact, i liked the small thin line in the standard cl front very much, that makes the car look very wide. My CL63 looks in my opinion almost to agressive... ok, not really :D
The common CL driver is looking for understatement, but in this times the design of every car, specially the front is only: I´m a bad, bad mean machine... so give way.

This is starting to bore me a lot, where is the elegance?
A coupe, especially the S-Coupe has not to compete with a 911turbo or something, it has to be something for its own, not to be compared.

Back to toppic:
I´m very eager to see the BACK! That is what needs to bee updatet, i have to confess..

LOL. Not at all mate. Hell If I could afford a CL, I'd be in one...with the AMG kit of course. :D

I'm just saying, Mercedes does still have to retain their appeal to the older demographic. These are the guys who keep on coming back generation after generation for CL's and S's, so the standard versions do need to be a bit plainer/more elegant rather than aggressive.

You are absolutely correct! I am sure most S-Class buyers are much more interested in the popular selling features of the car as a limo type ride rather than the aficionado interests of this forum. The CL is somewhat of an extension of the typical S-Class buyer who appreciates all that the S offers but with an added level of specialness and individuality. For the mainstream market, the CL does indeed need to remain elegant and unaggressive, but with that being said, I think all CL's need the sport package kit. It is afterall a rakish coupe and "sporty" is definitely an integral part of the CL model. Then again, I think all Mercedes should have 20" wheels, ABC, and 500+ horsepower - so what do I know?

Front of the AMG Version looks great, like a TRUE modernized W126 SEC front, which is just as good as it gets.

I can't tell any difference in the regular model though? And did they REALLY do such an extensive F.L, that they replaced the fenders/hood, just to eliminate the wheel arch? The CL is so low volume, I'm surprised they'd invest that R&D money into just the F.L. Maybe Safety Regulations?

The W216 CL is such a beautiful car on one hand, yet so generic, boring (rear), and slightly awkward on the other (especially without the AMG Kit, yikes!). Sometimes I see it and think "Toyota Solora" or something.

I feel this Gen of CL has had a less prestigious and popular perception than the ones preceding it. I remember when the W215 was out, it was such a stylish statement (I never liked it much though, due to being such a statement, but it had a lot of buzz). This one seems to have been upped by the more ambitious W221, where it's usually the other way around.

Also, Sales are probably poorer due to that. At the same time, maybe it's simply the Economy to blame, as it's lived through our worst Recession in modern times.

All that said, this car is more "me" than the W215 was, and I like it more than that model. As well, I will gladly, GLADLY take a CL550 with an AMG Pack please, in White or Silver. :t-cheers:
