I am curious to see what their assessment was.

I know I tend to wax on about Zetsche and his fashion sense, but I like how, as the head guy at arguably the most conservative of the 3 German luxury marques, that he goes full hipster for the autoshows. Between his general sense of whimsy (and mustache) and bringing back M-B from the debacle of that merger, he's got a top spot in my book.

There's something about the interior that makes me think of late 90's Japanese Hi-Fi... specifically Denon Mini Systems... kinda makes me like it a little bit more :D

I get the same vibe from the interior too, it is the look of those buttons and rotary control, they look exactly like it is from the 90's Jap Hi Fi set.

Gone are the fleet sales, I suppose.

What company, law firm, hotel etc is going to buy this epitome of ugliness for their employees and / or clients / guests etc. ???

Lexus design language is totally obnoxious ... and it primarily caters to US customer pool taste, I guess.

Where's even a base aesthetics??? There's absolutely none! Overdone to the grotesque levels.

You will be surprised by the number of people who actually liked the design language. I have seen a few face lifted IS and GS on the streets already, their front end styling is so hideous that I thought nobody will buy them, but I guess not. The NX, RX and even the LX are doing well. A number of my friends actually like the edgy/modern styling of the Lexus.

Yup. Two of my cousins, who are quite fashion conscious, bought new NX's. They love the way it looks. They are completely clueless about cars though.

That said the NX and RX are the only models selling in decent numbers. The rest of the range appear to be duds with the GS leading the pack. Quite a shame really as it was once upon a time a reasonable alternative to the Euros. Now it just looks like a Toyota on roids with the ugly spindle grill grafted on the front. The distinct silhouette has been destroyed.

We need a sad/crying rating button for posts like this. All my empathy to you for having such cousins :p
Here in Bolivia, Lexus are extremely popular so I'm sorrounded by these abortions of sheet metal.

I salute you and take off my hat for that!

I'm bald, so that could be me :D

Design-wise, it has the potential to stand out from the pack. Some elements seem a little premature IMO. One example of this is the dipping window line in the front and rear doors on the production version. This design element, along with the elongated rear overhang makes the profile look saggy like the body is dragging its flab on its wheels.

Compare this to the concept version.
The short rear overhang and straight window line in the front and rear doors gives the overall design a more coherent and modern-looking car.

I wish they'd employ their turbo inline four with their hybrid system in order to make it more appealing to the European and Chinese market. I think BMW has the right idea with their 7er hybrid.

Lexus rounds out the LS line with 500h hybrid

The 2018 Lexus LS range will feature a full hybrid LS 500h version, which will be presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The LS 500h is expected to use a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6, also seen in the LC 500h coupe.

The platform sibling LC 500 coupe does have an available V8 version in its non-hybrid guise, but perhaps Lexus has seen fit to equip only the sportier coupe with an eight-cylinder – a major deviation from the previous V8-only LS series bloodline. The earlier LS 600h was the first production full hybrid vehicle with a V8 engine, producing 439 horsepower; since the LC 500h's hybrid powertrain only produces 354 hp, the earlier car is likely to remain the horsepower king. The coupe still hits 60 mph under five seconds, so the big sedan should also be able to move briskly.

Almost 30 years have passed since Toyota unveiled its Lexus luxury brand and the LS 400 flagship, as the UCF10 body LS 400's design was locked in spring 1987 and the wraps came off in January 1989. The LS 400 of those days was often deservedly revered, and in the following decades it has spawned numerous new generations of high-end Lexus LS sedans. But in case the latter-day LS models have become just a touch too Camry- or Avalon-like, the 2018 version should bring a new edge.

It's really too bad that this car has a goofed up design. The rear/side profile is a mess. Too many windows and it looks like it's squatting even in person. Hopefully it drives beautifully. The interior has same amateur touches, but it looks like quality. If only they had stuck to the concept for the exterior.

Black, which ought to be de riguer on a large prestige sedan, looks odd on this LS.

I am not a fan of how Lexus are using these novel materials (pleated silk paneling on the door, kiriko glass in lieu of wood in the interior) as it looks unnecessarily busy.

GASP you gotta give them credit for sticking with a pure Japanese design ethic for the interior, that is very different from anything else in the class. Though the wood is right from the S-Class. That interior design will be a draw for some and a repellent for others. That exterior though, a shocking mess. The rear greenhouse area as people call it, looks like hearse a tacky limo. WOW. Ugly AF.
