SELLING AT NO RESERVE

In early 2000, Lexus executives decided it was time to add speed to their repertoire by building a limited run supercar. Developed over nine years under codename P280, the end result was the stunning LFA coupe. The Nurburgring Edition, a circuit tuned variant, appeared in 2012. With only fifty produced, it is one of the most exclusive, expensive and impressive cars to ever come out of Japan.

Despite an absolutely endless array of interior options, Lexus opted to limit exterior choices to four colors on the Nurburgring Editions: Matte Black, Gloss Black, White and Orange. White is Japan’s traditional racing color, so it makes sense that this Japanese supercar wears a glossy coat of Whitest White. Under that paint, a carbon fiber body has been fashioned with the sole intent of cutting through air as quickly as possible.

At the heart of the LFA is a hand built 72-degree 4.8L V10 producing 563 hp and 354 lb. ft. of torque. That power translates to 3.6 second 0-60 times and 11.4 second quarter mile runs right off the showroom floor. Developed exclusively for the LFA, there is no other engine in the Toyota family that resembles the 1LR-GUE. In many ways, it functions like two 5-cylinder engines. Each bank of cylinders receives its own airflow path complete with its own mass air flow sensor and air box. The plenum box is divided internally and sits on top of ten independent throttle bodies. Lexus engineers wanted to the LFA to sound like a F1 car and it’s safe to say they achieved that. Toyota engineers have been cited as calling it the “roar of angels”.

Backing the V10 is a rear-mounted six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox operated with paddle-shifters. To tailor the driving experience, there are four pre-programmed settings: auto, normal, sport and wet. Drivers can also opt to override the system and go fully manual if the opportunity arises. Power is sent to the road though a Torsen limited slip differential that turns a set of 20 inch forged aluminum BBS wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires.

Depress the recessed door handle and a fully customized interior awaits you. Lexus provided buyers the opportunity to choose the color and texture of nearly every piece in the car so finding two completely alike is highly improbable. The lightweight bucket seats are wrapped in red Alcantara as is the console, carbon fiber steering wheel and door panels. Black Alcantara covers the dash and headliner.

There are carbon fiber accents throughout as well. Being a Lexus, there is naturally a fair amount of technology at play in the cabin. In the center of the console, the Remote Touch controller interface operates a plethora of features including the stereo, navigation system, back up camera and even personalized vehicle settings. Adding to the vehicle is the fact that this LFA is a 1 of 1 color/option Nurburgring Edition built for NASCAR Team Owner Rob Kauffman by Toyota.

Only time will tell if the LFA is a one-time excursion for Lexus or the beginning of a lasting performance legacy. Either way, it is one of the most impressive looking and performing Japanese sports cars ever created.

People will tell you how the Lexus LFA's display is fully customizable. That's completely irrelevant information. What you need to know is this.

Keep your 458, I want this Toyota.

So..will you buy the LFA for $1 million AUD if you have more then enough spare cash?

So..will you buy the LFA for $1 million AUD if you have more then enough spare cash?

Prices are relevant to the market. It is like asking if one would buy an E92 M3 for $180,000, which is what it costs in Australia. I believe, a brand new LFA cost $850,000 with taxes in Australia so it is selling for $150,000 AUD premium as the seller is trying to take advantage of the fact that it is the only LFA out of the 10 in Australia available for sale. Competition is what always drives the price down.

If I had a lot of money to blow on cars then sure absolutely I would buy it, but then again the market must justify the price.

The boss of Lexus Australia has revealed the company could have sold more of its $750,000 Lexus LFA supercar than the 10 allocated for our market.

In Japan for Wednesday’s Tokyo motor show, Lexus Australia CEO Sean Hanley reported that he has had to turn down solid enquiries for the out-of-production flagship.

“We could have sold more,” he told.

“In recent months, as recently as the last four months, I’ve had three enquiries from private buyers.

“It’s clear to me that genuine performance car enthusiasts want that LFA”.

Although only 500 units of the Lexus LFA were built, Hanley adds that what that car represents for the brand will live on in new models.

“Production has stopped for that car, but the technology, design and the … enthusiasm to bring exciting, fun-to-drive cars to Lexus hasn’t stopped.

“It’s brought excitement, it’s brought intuitive engineering… LFA was a brand-changer for us, where I think [Toyota CEO] Akio Toyoda once said: we did it because we can, because we have the history, we have the technology, we have the expertise and the engineering.

“LFA was brought to market to show people that actually Lexus can do this, we have the capability, and for me it was a benchmark to the future, to the bold new confident Lexus.”

Hanley is confident that Lexus’ traditional values of building quality, luxurious cars with benchmark customer service, fused with a new focus on dynamics, represents not only a turning point for the brand, but may deliver an unbeatable combination against its competitor set.

“We started this journey 25 years ago with the LS, and we said at the time the number one priority is to give an exceptional customer experience … give the best customer service. And I have no doubt that in Australia we tick that box, we tick that box every day.

“In doing whatever we do with LFA, and design, and technology, and performance in the future, we will never, ever, ever depart from that number one core value of giving an exceptional driving experience.

“We take that, which we know we’ve ticked, and then you add the excitement potential of cars that get cues from the LFA… it’s a truly exciting time for our brand.

“That’s the significance of the LFA – we’re bringing exciting, fun-to-drive cars to the market”.

The brand’s next production model, the Lexus RC coupe, will make its public debut at Wednesday’s Tokyo motor show.

I saw a blue LFA and a silver Ferrari F12 at a show recently, the quality of the fit and finish of the LFA is on another level compare to the F12.

Let's be perfectly frank - the Italians have never been paragons of fit and finish. Even their most expensive cars can't match those from Germany (and in the case of the superbly crafted LFA) at the same price point.

German and Japanese cars lack these 3
