Golf Official: Golf GTI "Concept" Mk.VI

I don't like those blingy ninja star numbers. Should have been a more sophisticated 5 spoke unit.

The rest of the car looks great to me but the wheels are definitely a problem. They could have been a little more innovative and original instead of just sticking the previous generations wheels on the new body style. Unfortunate. Hopefully we'll have options.

What I can do without is funky patterns on the cloth seats.

It's part of the GTI's heritage and something I don't think VW is willing (nor should they) change (IMO).

Well they should at least offer just plain cloth as an option here in the U.S. Many of the used Jetta GLI's I've been looking at this and while I don't like cloth per say, I could tolerate it without the funky pattern, but thats just me.

I like it can't wait to see it Down Under :D

Quite disappointing it's not getting the new 2 liter turbo used in the Audis. That would have given both better performance and economy.

As far as I know this is the new Audi derived 2.0T :usa7uh:

I don't ever recall having this design of wheel on a GTI prior to the Mk 5. My last two certainly didn't.

This is correct. It is the newly revised and significantly updated VWAG 2.0T.

As with all modern turbo engines, power and torque outputs are governed by electronic settings.

I think it's great that Volkswagen respects traditions but the tartan pattern on the seats looks out of place in a modern car.

It's like you dressed like this...

The interior looks fantastic. Especially that shifter which looks hewn straight off an iron block... Except it is a bit too big.

I have no doubt that the new GTI would be a knock-out. Think they'll still keep the 6-speed though because they mentioned before that the 7-speed box only works for low-torque vehicles (<250Nm).

Now who would take the 3-door over a Scirocco?

Yep the cams are now driven by a chain. Should sort out the cam wear issue as found on tuned non EA888 2.0T's!

if you'd like to believe in autobild, those xenon lights are going to stay :usa7uh:

Rumormill: Volkswagen working on GTI 'Plus', GTD, and R42
VW is going to make the most of its new GTI, with three models joining what has already been a well received hot hatch. A 'GTD' variant using a 2.0-liter common rail diesel will go into production in April 2009, with 170 horses and nearly 260 lb.-ft. moving through either a six-speed manual or VW's DSG gearbox. The GTD will be sold at an €800 premium over its gasoline brother, and will get to 62 mph about a second slower in return for longer hauls between refills.

After that, toward the end of 2009, comes the GTI 'Plus' that will push the car dangerously close to the Audi S3 and may spell the end of the current R32. A 60 hp bump over the standard GTI takes the Plus up to 270. The fun-to-drive factor should be raised with a seven-speed DSG transmission, and handling mastery will come courtesy of a Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

The capstone: to help everyone get over the current and rather underwhelming R32, the hottest hotness is supposed to come in 2010 in the form of an R42. Swapping the current V6 for a 2.5-liter, turbocharged 5-cylinder that it will share with Audi's TT-RS and RS3, the raunchy R is rumored to get a chest-hair-growing 350 hp. If Auto Motor und Sport are to be believed, it will start rolling out of factories in November of 2009 at an undisclosed price.

Any truth or complete garbage?

I really like the new GTi, all the accent features from the fiver are there; red lines, wheels and cloth interior and in the same time the car has many design cues from the Scirocco, only toned down. It is great!

I dont think there is any chance of a 350hp golf. Why would VAG allow VW to have a RS3 with a golf badge?

Why not? VAG practically invented swapping parts and engines between it's brands.....

If there is to be a 350hp GTI then it would be reserved for the Scirocco since it's a more premium model and can escalate into a higher price range than the Golf without look out of place.
