Focus Official: Ford Focus RS500

The Focus is set to go out with a bang with the ultimate hot hatch! For the car’s swansong, before the all-new third generation arrives in dealers next year, Ford bosses have given the green light to a firebreathing new version.

Taking the already potent RS as a base, the RS500 features a revised engine that will really get fast Ford fans talking. The Volvo-sourced turbocharged 2.5-litre has been tweaked by UK-based tuner Mountune. The result is a power output boosted to 345bhp – a 15 per cent increase from standard. Plus, torque has risen from 440Nm to 460Nm, to give the engine yet more mid-range punch.

To squeeze out all the extra power, the RS500 is equipped with an enlarged intercooler, which feeds colder, denser air into the engine. A larger exhaust downpipe and new fuel pump have been fitted to keep up with the unit’s higher performance demands.

In addition, the engine management system has been recalibrated to optimise the delivery of power for maximum pace. As a result, the sprint from 0-62mph now takes only 5.6 seconds – three-tenths faster than the standard car – while top speed is up from 163mph to 165mph.

Madness, yet, maddeningly alluring. Let's face it - Revoknuckle's not even up to the job of containing the standard RS' prodigious outputs and now they've gone and done this? Did I say madness?

These new matt finish paint jobs freak my pip; how is one supposed to care for the paintwork and avoid the inevitable swirl scratches? Would love to know because it seems to be an increasingly popular, though expensive, exterior finish.

A bit crazy, yes. But does not stop me from wanting one. :D

....:::: Ford Focus RS500 ::::....

That's true about the paint though. Can't really 'polish' it. But I think a number of car care companies are working on cleansing products etc, plus some waxes can be used on matt paint apparently.

Interesting point about the paint from the press release:

The matt black foil finish for the RS500 was developed in partnership with the technology company 3M, which specialises in advanced film products for the automotive industry.
All Focus RS500 vehicles will be painted in a standard Panther Black metallic colour, before being shipped to a dedicated 3M facility near Frankfurt, Germany, where a special foil film will be applied to the bodywork to create the matt black effect.
The film is extremely durable, and is specifically designed to resist superficial marks and scratches in automotive applications. In the event of damage to the bodywork, Ford dealers will be fully supported by a Europe-wide network of 3M agents who can replace the film on the affected panels.t.

If I wanted a fast Focus ... I'd get the ST. The RS seems to try too hard but somehow it fails to deliver. This special edition seems to try even harder, I'd even say it's bordering on desperation. It looks like it's straight off the set of a B-movie or something.

Got a lil tip..

WD40!!

Brings up a shine in matt black ;)

When I read the name of the thread I thought they made 500 hp RWD Focus. This is just madness and I don't really care about this car.

OMG. I just hope we in the U.S. get some really hot versions of the new Focus. Not this hot though. This thing is going to be an unruly riot to drive.

M

It looks like a mean machine, but with all that power in the front wheels it had to be 4WD. I've driven the normal Focus RS and it was a scary drive around the circuit!
