Z Series [Official] E89 BMW Z4

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
Expensive, but they got the price comparis with the previous model sought of wrong. The 255HP version of the previous Z4 actually cost $42700, not $36700. The $36700 one was the 215HP version which I guess is not offered anymore.

Could any one answer this question for me. If these cars (CCs) do not have aluminium folding tops already, then why not. Alu is lighter. The only reasons i can think of is because of rigidity and cost. But the big question is if it is possible to use Alu in such an application.

I do not know if these cc tops use aluminum or not, one would think they already do. But rigidity is definitely not a factor to not use it. These cc tops are not a stress bearing element and do not contribute to rigidity in any manner like a fixed hard top, so it doesn't matter what you make, it with it will not add to the car's rigidity. Weight and cost are probably the only factors that determine what is used.

Sunny you're spot on. If it is being used already then i why have i not heard about it. If it is about cost why not then offer it on the more expensive model like SLs and 6er.

Ramius your'e absolutely 100% rite. I actually did some research and came across it in quite a few articles. Thanks bud. Next step is carbon fibre, as Sunny mentioned. :D

When the 6er came out, BMW said it would like to preserve the sportiness and sporty image with the ragtop (maybe an excuse though, since the 6er is a cruiser after all). But in general, foldable hardtops add weight, and higher the center of gravity, making cars less sporty.

To add to what was said above, I read in many reviews that cars twist and rattle slightly more when the hard top is folded, as compared to when it is up. I never read that with soft tops.

But in any case, as was said, and as an engineer, I can't imagine that the contribution of a folding hard top to the rigidity of a car is significant, if at all there even, since a folding hard top is composed of many folding pieces and therefore is crap in the science of materials scope of things.

Z4 is also available in configurator of BMW USA!

BMW North America

Anyone know anything about these?
not only do you save a good 1,500euros but garmin/tomtom etc are better than built-in gps's because of the possibility of upgrades, more features, touch screen, more view angles, etc etc, better than anything idrive/navi has to offer, at least from what i've seen (it's also the case for most other car manufacturers' built-in gps's).

Not bad at all, but looks a bit cheap in my opinion! Would prefer the storage over any Navigation!
