Z Series [Official] E89 BMW Z4

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
Hooray!!!!

Saw one on the road yesterday, driving in front of me. I got to see the back with the LEDs turned on, and later the car made a turn to the right so I got a good look at the side profile. It was a dark gray sDrive35i, and the guy was driving open (it was beautiful weather). There was no tape whatsoever on the car, not even the logos were taped off. Kind of strange, because the official dealer debut will be somewhere in May..

Stunning car irl! Even prettier when you see one moving around on the roads :icondrool:icondrool:icondrool:icondrool

I finally sat inside the new Z4 today. The interior is a let down to me. I was expecting some really good interior materials but the interior is no better than my facelifted 1-series. Also the interior for the new E-class is no better. Sounds like I have become very critical with interior materials lately.
Oh well , as long as the interior design is attractive then I dont care so much for interior quality. And the interior for Z4 and E-class do look good but the interior quality could have been better.

I have to agree with reviewers regarding the new Z4. The car has become mature and grown up. Sitting inside, the car felt more cosy than sporty. Previous Z4 felt sportier and the interior is more cramped. Now I'm looking forward to met the upcoming Z2. I think Z2 will become the previous generation Z4.

PS the Z4 I sat inside today, did not have the extended leather option. I think its needed.

Anyway, all these complaints aside, this is my favorite mini Roadster. Its a really beautiful car.

Thanks JM... what was it about the interior quality that you didn't like? A lack of soft-touch dash materials?

As for your assessment of the interior fit - whilst I haven't seen the new E89 in the flesh yet - by all accounts it seems that the car has gone up a notch in luxury and has lost a fair deal of the old E85's compact sporty demeanour. EVO did not give it a good rating upon first drive.

So, the new Z4 ends up being better looking than ever and is endowed with the best all-round engine in the world (IEOTY) yet has been softened and fattened up to the point that true fans of the E85 will be happy to pick up run-out model bargains. I know, I'm looking...

Edit: Regarding soft-touch dashtop materials I have read somewhere (I forget) that there's a growing trend among auto makers to utilise dash surfaces that are made using more recycled material than ever before. Apparently, the trend is to eschew, wherever possible, the use of urethane-based coverings in order to make the materials more recyclable. Please, if any of you can correct me or have more accurate information (I'm recalling off vague memory here...) then let us know - it's a very interesting topic. Unfortunately, this practice is what has lead to more of that "Tupperware" feel in most new cars these days - the more mass-produced, the more prevalent the situation. It's symptomatic of the times.

Ok, let me try to explain.
All the buttons and levels are of good quality , although one of the levels came directly from my car. The black plastic was the same as my car. The "aluminum" part on the dashboard felt thin and hollow.
I didnt find any gaps , the fit seemed good.

I'm not saying its bad, I just felt it could have been better. I dont know but Audi,MB and BMW are getting sloppy lately. New A4, Z4 and new E-class for example.

I think it's less of a case of getting sloppy and more of a case of the environmental and economic factors faced by all makers at the moment.

You're a friend, but i don't believe you.

I'll check a 3.5 in 15 days or so and i'll let you know if you were drunk, on drugs or something else... Let down?

Ok, ok, you've sat in it...:D

:t-cheers:

hurrah . thanks for sharing the same feeling have had sitting 10 minutes in the z4. saw the extended leather and did not feel it special or classy, had it in porsche boxster and leather was not so "plastic". as for plastics and some commands, true that some are tupperware as you say, and the bottom of the doors is made of very but very cheap plastic. so overall impression was not far better than my series 1 and below a e92. i wonder how dashboard will look like without leather. at least, everything seemed well put together and style is "woo factor", but would have expected better... (not on par with audi and slk for plastic appearance at least)

Saw the car yesterday. Black with red interior. Fresh new luxury image, a bit different from the E85, but nonetheless the new car is eye catching and completely runs over the SLK in all departments. It's a true mini SL and will likely be the segment leader with it's high versatility. Only the TT can rival it in looks.:usa7uh:

lol Martin....Luw is still halfway in the RR Ghost thread I think ;)

It really has become a mini SL, and that's speaking for the Z4 because the SL is a legend in car land.

lol if you think otherwise. I suggest you to go to the dealer and check it out without all the crowds of a car show.
A Z4 is roughly €20k more than a comparable 1er with same engine, and part of that huge difference you see back in the quality of the materials.

I already done that a couple of weeks ago. I have written a short review somewhere in this thread. And I wasnt impressed.

Oh so the Z4 is not what you thought it was???

The car looks good both outside and inside but its the interior materials I'm skeptical about. Same case with Audi A4 and new E-class, the interior materials did not impress me, its not better than before. I didnt found progress.

A4 and Z4 maybe...but the E-class is top notch (interior wise).

I've been asking this question for years...but I will do it one more time for old time sake.

What exactly are you looking for in an interior to be impressive? Other then the basics!
