Z Series [Official] E89 BMW Z4 LCI

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z4 sDrive35is first drive review

What is it?

The new BMW Z4 is an exercise in restraint. Four years after the second-generation roadster was added to the BMW line-up, it has received the most subtle of facelifts.
Among the changes are edgier bumpers, a new chrome styling feature within the front flanks and new wheel designs ranging in diameter from 17-inch up to optional 19-inch items, as worn by our test car.
The distinguishing styling elements of the new model are the altered grille and headlamps, which together serves to provide it with a slightly more expressive front-end appearance. Oh, and there’s now an awful piece of exposed grey Styrofoam that is visible through the grille, giving the new roadster anything but a premium air when viewed up close.
What is it like?

The turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine tested here in the Z4 sDrive35is is hardly new, but it remains the most compelling of the five engines with which it is produced with loads of low end torque and an eagerness to rev when the conditions allow. It sounds terrific, too: there’s a pleasing mechanical growl under load and a booming exhaust on the overrun.
The longitudinally mounted engine delivers a 335bhp – 20bhp more than the naturally aspirated 3.4-litre flat six petrol unit used in the Porsche Boxster S. In combination with a standard seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, it provides the BMW roadster with class leading straight line performance: the Z4 sDrive35is’s official 0-62mph time beats the Boxster S by 0.3sec at just 4.8sec.
To drive, the new Z4 sDrive35is is pretty much the same as its predecessor; it is a fun car in the right conditions with a rear-wheel-drive chassis that possesses a good deal of adjustability, so you can rely on the efforts of the engine to kick the tail out when the DSC (dynamic stability control) is switched off.
There remains some sign of scuttle shake on badly pockmarked roads, but for the most part the new BMW rides well. The weak point remains the steering, a speed-sensitive electro-mechancial system. While nicely weighted, it lacks consistency, proving extra direct turning off centre and becoming less direct as lock is applied.
Should I buy one?

A minor refresh, then. One that’s unlikely to win the Z4 many new customers. But, at the same time, it’s not going to put anyone off the likeable roadster, either.
BMW is hoping the mid-life changes, as subtle as they are, will be enough to see the Z4 through to 2016 when an all-new, third-generation model is planned to appear. I’m not convinced they are. Not when the open-top competition, including the latest Porsche Boxster and new Jaguar F-type, is so strong.

No LED updates because it would be too expensive. The car sells so badly. Complete fail for a rather very very good looking one in and out.

The Z4 kind of lost it's plot in life in it's evolution. The Z3 was a nice step up from the miata, and the Z4 with it's flame surface and latter invigoration by the coupe and M introductions, was a nice evolution of the Z3, and was priced well.

This last Z4 seemed to want mainly to undercut the Merc SL. It's relative softness and expense I see as evidence. Whether global economic issues, demographic issues or whatnot, the strategy has not proven itself well.

It is unfortunate. While I pinned for the Z4, first generation, I felt no attraction to the Z4 second generation, bargain Merc SL. Perhaps they had hoped that all the non-enthusiast who had purchased the Z4 gen I, and there were many of them, that at least a percentage would go the bargain Merc SL route.

Whenever I do see a Z4 gen II in person, which is not as often as I would like, I'm reminded that it is really a handsome car, but then I think of the weight, and the compromised trunk space, and I think, "no thank you".

Wish them the best in sorting out what is appealing in the roadster department. The Z2 promise doesn't look like it's going to be fulfilled, and I suspect that Z4 2015-16 is going to be more of the same, with perhaps even more of a lurch upmarket with dubious sporting intentions.

Actually next z4 is going to be the first Sport Activity Roadster (SAR) which derives from the cancelled Sport Activity Sedan (SAS) which is an SUV with a sedan like trunk originally planned to be called X4 which now turns out to be a Sport Activity Vehicle With a Fastback Roof but Same Interior (SAVWFRSI).

And to anticipate future Audi TT Shooting Break and Merc SLK Shooting Break which are inevitable to happen, next Z4 is planned to have a second and third bodystyle. but before getting anyone excited, the additional bodystyles will not be a Light Weight Roadster with a Fixed Hardtop (LWRFH) which BMW apparently has decided as an Extinct Main Bodystyle Replaced By Unneccesary Niches (EMBRUN). Past examples of these are the iconic Z3 Breadback and Z4 Hunchback.

Instead we will see Higher Ride Height Sport Activity Roadster Gran Turismo (HRHSAR-GT).

Third variant is New Concept Short Hood Entry Level Roadster (NCSHELR) which BMW claims owners will not realize that it is actually Half-Front-Half-Rear-Drive (HFHRD) which like the BMW i-Series promises to be the next big thing as the driving wheels are only the left-side wheels for RHD markets and right-side wheels for LHD markets. It will redefine the meaning of doing a "wheelie".

EPIC POST, Huckfledt! (y)

After this current Z4 I doubt anyone will be getting excited anytime soon...just look at the activity, or more accurately, the lack of activity in these Z4 threads.

There is no point in thinking about the Z2, it will be FWD based on the next Mini Coupé/Roadster.

Current Z4 is too expensive and un-sporty to be the Z3 of that day, but not enough luxurious to compete against SL. Hence even the SL AMG is now sportier and faster than M6. I think the Z range is of no interest to BMW anymore. Hopefully Toyota will change that.

Seing the new F15, it is "just" an improved E70, with new metal sheet and redecorated interior. I don't say F15 is not better than E70, and that is just the point. Why can't BMW do the same for E89? Instead of developing any costly supercar without that won't bring any profit (according to BMW), an E89 chassis (improved) with new body, non-openning hard-top, and new interior and F8X engine would be enough to be a stand alone M model. Or is the Z4 such a bad car to be anything sporty?

Oh? You know this how? I thought the F15 was based on the F10. But I guess you can smell it's just a facelift.

No need for a link proving you're right btw. We all believe you :hungover:

BMW has done a lot of stuff that I would have thought they would never do. I don't think they are too the point of facelifting a car and then announcing it as all new.

What infuriates me is that BMW refuses to entertain the idea that the problem is with the car or its marketing, but rather its due to a "global economic meltdown" that has "changed the way luxury buyers shop". I really could rant about this for hours and infact I might make a post on my thoughts of where BMW is now and where they seem to be headed.

There's nothing wrong with this car! It's one perfect roadster :)

Yes, but I feel both this and the new SLK are boring and undesirable. They are intended to be flashy products and are not authentic.

Not so, with the new Boxster.

The press release for the Pure Fusion Design:

Munich. Classic roadster proportions, superior engine and drivetrain technology plus innovative equipment features highlight the individual character of the BMW Z4. The two-seater features an electric retractable hardtop that can be raised or lowered when the vehicle is in motion, a feature that makes driving a joy under sunny skies or any kind of weather conditions all year long. The equipment package known as Pure Fusion Design adds an exclusive aesthetic appeal to the sporty open-air experience.

Pure Fusion Design refines the interior of the BMW Z4 to intensify the premium character of the car even more. The various exclusive colors and materials available are expressions of sporty luxury. These are embellished with precision seams, surfaces and exclusive stitching that bring harmony to the orchestration of the interior. The package includes extended premium Nappa leather trim, specially designed sport seats in Ivory White with contrasting brown stitching that highlights the perforated surface of the contoured side supports in the seat backs. The armrests, door panels and the passenger pull handle are also enhanced by the exclusive leather and contrast stitching. The lower portion of the dashboard also presents itself in Ivory White and adds to the harmony of the interior color tones. The same effect is achieved with the black leather contrasted with brown lapfolded seams that cover the window sills, the top of the dashboard and the instrument cluster scoop.

Another bold and stylish accent of note is the horizontal trim line made of Saddle Brown Nappa leather with bright contrast stitching that stretches from the passenger side into the driver’s cockpit. The trim on the center console and near the five round controls just below the central air vent in the dash are finished in Fineline wood, a new addition to the interior accents now available. The look and feel of Pure Fusion Design is rounded off by sun visors covered with black Nappa leather.

As an exclusive touch and only in combination with the Pure Fusion Design package, the BMW Z4 can now, for the first time, be ordered with the Sparkling Brown metallic paint finish. A rich choice of other colors is also available. Pure Fusion Design can also be combined with the M Sport package.

It would have been nice if there was also a Individual program on the Z4...

I like this new pack. But I keep wondering what is going to happen with this car in the future. We are two years away from the supposed successor debut, but haven´t heard a word about it, nor see a single spy pic or test mule. If it was not for the Toyota deal, I´d say there is not going to be a third Z4.
