Z Series [Official] E89 BMW Z4

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
Hey the sdrive23i car costs £28,645 in the UK which means 32000 € !!! (souce: BMW UK website)

How is it possible ???

Too bad they have right driving position ! ;)

Remember the pound is at such a low against the euro currently. If it was priced much higher than that nobody would buy it, it needs to be competitively priced against its counterparts.

The sDrive35i is the same price as the SLK350 with 305bhp, and the sDrive30i is the same as the SLK280.

Great car looks wise. :usa7uh:

But there are two serious concerns about it:
Who told us we should expect the 35i to weigh less than the old Z4 M? ;) That was so wrong, 1580kg (by EU std) is quite heavy and in fact almost 100kg more than the old Z4 M. :eusa_thin

Besides that I can't understand the decision to put old Valvetronic engines in the line up! Both 23i and 30i engines are that old I can't believe they still want to use 'em. The only logical reason I can think of is meeting the EU5 standard made this step necessary. Right?

Best regards, south

Btw ENI, why didn't they put the 272 hp and 326 hp engines ?

Great car looks wise. :usa7uh:

Yeah I wondered the engine choices too. The sDrive35i with 225 kW (instead of sDrive40i with 240 kW) didn't surprise me but the sDrive30i with 190 kW sure did. South I think you might be right about the emissions being a factor behind the decision.

????

This is a very weird engine model decision.

Eg.
330i cabrio (N53 272HP) = 185g/km CO2 ... vs ... Z4 sDrive 30i (N52 258HP) = 199g/km CO2
325i cabrio (N53 218HP) = 181g/km CO2 ... vs ... Z4 sDrive 23i (N52 204HP) = 199g/km CO2

N53 engines definitely are cleaner.

So ... I'm clueless.

Thanks. I was too lazy to check the CO2 figures.

Really strange indeed. I just remembered the 130i (3-dr/5-dr) and the (E85) Z4 3.0si have 195 kW (vs. sDrive30i with 190 kW).

Perhaps it has something to do with lack of engine room. I hope not. Car Magazine already claimed that there is not enough space to fit the S65-engine (from M3).

What of the outgoing, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs Z4 M? Sadly, there will be no space in the engine bay for a V8, but Munich is withdrawing from big eights in its smaller models. Even the next M3 will revert to a six-pot, we hear.

If the car will be offered with Cloth roof I think we can expect it to weigh like 100 kg less.

CO2 figures:

185 - 199gr....

hey guys...who in the real world would give a damn? If you use this car the "right" way..you are more likely to sent 400gr through the exhaust :usa7uh:

"If it did not want to be burned, it should not have become fossile energy" :t-drive:

LOL :D We weren't wondering its carbon footprint but rather why BMW has chosen a less powerful version of its 3.0-liter I6. We thought the reason might be the need to meet next generation EU emission standards but as EnI pointed out, in addition to being less powerful, the sDrive30i also has higher emissions. So that can't be the reason. This is why we're confused... :t-hands:

According to wikipedia "BMW does not plan to put the N53 engine for sale in Australian and North American models due to the high sulphur content of the fuel available in these markets." BMW N53 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And I'm guessing you're right about BMW wanting to keep co2-emissions below 200g/km.

Maybe the EU is to blame: To comply with the EU5 standard it may have been necessary for BMW to use these old engines: EU5 norm states a limit for PM emission, which is only applicated to diesel engines and gasoline engines with direct injection. Assuming HPI engines cannot meet that limit yet, the decision for an engine being less clean but meeting EU5 (= no emission related tax in Germany for up to 2 years) might have been inevitable.

Anyway that's just a guess, you didn't hear anything to back that up?

Hmmm... Cost-cutting is another possibility. After all, Z4 has relatively small production number so having the same 3-liter I6 (30i & 35i) engines on all markets might save them a lot of money... :eusa_thin

This sounds very plausible ...

Indeed - N53 & N54 engines are Euro4 only. And since only 6-cyl engines are in the offer ... This is it.

:t-cheers:

I wonder when Euro5 N53 & N54 engines will be ready though. :eusa_thin
The Euro5 deadline is September 2009.

Will the fine particle filters be introduced in DI gasoline engines as well (like in diesel engines)?

Wow...talk about turning a ugly car to a cool one!

The front is the best BMW-front in ages!!!
Great work on the car, really!

Blue really suits the car and I'm usually not a fan of blue metal. The design is mostly great, though as someone already said, the roof is best kept down. It really destroys the beautiful look when put up, as it looks awkward from some angles... Anyone know how much later will the coupe version follow?
Will there be a coupe version even?

^looks awkward with roof up because the roof is so short, event he SLK is like this, typical for a car this shape, are they going to make a coupe version?

sometimes looking at different makes, bmws are just so admirable, every single line, contour anything has a sense in it, it's not like they just put a line there because they want to have a line, but the line leads to something that shapes the whole car. The emotion is not just an angry agressive face but elegant and classy, it's just admirable.
