M2 [Official] BMW M2 Competition

The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range. Official website: BMW M
"The M2 Competition’s kerb weight is 55kg heavier than the old M2’s at 1550kg in six-speed manual guise, largely due to the engine. Despite the added bulk, its power-to-weight ratio has risen by 17bhp per tonne over its predecessor to 261bhp per tonne."
Maybe you didn't pay attention to what I wrote. M4 DIN 1497 kg/EU 1572 kg and this is with the steal brakes, with the carbon ceramic it's even lighter. M2 has always struggled from its excessive weight and now the case is even worse. It may be better than the AUDI and MB in this class, but it's lacking behind the M4 and especially the Porsche 718

Now M2 is only a downgraded and cheaper M4. While, when M1 coupe was released it was more than 120 kg lighter than the m3, had a turbo engine against NA, so different character and had 100 Nm more. Also M3 was around 60% more expensive. Now M4 is only 20% more expensive, still has higher power and lighter weight. Why one should by the M2 over the M4?

The only thing that bothers me is the steering wheel which is the same as the one in my wife's 530d... :t-banghea

It should have been either in alcantra or some different style, this one looks boring already.¨Oh, and yes, the wheels could have been better...

Everything else is just spot on. Especially the joined grille... I love it!

M2 is a smaller car than M4 with a similar engine, it is remarkable that it is heavier than its bigger brother!

More changes than I was expecting. I was disappointed with the original M2 at the beginning and would have said this is how it should have been from the beginning.

There will be a lot of angry existing M2 owners out there however I wont be one of them. Sure I wish I could have waited but the timing wasn't right and I needed a new car two months ago. Couldn't wait another 8 months until first deliveries.

Having had my M2 LCI for 8 weeks now, its a superb car in its own right, plenty enough power for me and as mostly a DD, just the right balance.

I'm more bothered than I thought I would be.

There are a few surprises, new instrument cluster, new 19" Y wheels, Icon LED lights and M Seats standard (in UK). plus the M buttons and mode buttons. These perhaps grate me the most, being able to choose and control the throttle response and DCT gearbox aggressiveness which you cant do very well in my car.

Not sure about the looks yet, it appears more aggressive but will wait until I see it in the flesh before making any judgement on the new grille. Looks weird but I guess it will be a grower.

Please, please, please do stop posting pics and videos from Shmee150 website though. There's plenty of official material out there. In fact, how can he put his stamp on those photos when they are the BMW ones anyway?

Being smaller is not always an advantage, but being lighter is. Every additional kilo you have to accelerate it, to turn it in the corner and to brake it. Smaller wheel base gives advantage in tight turns, but its a drawback on the straights and the wide turns. M2 is also higher and has a still roof, which makes it with a higher center of gravity. Nimbleness is a virtue, but the M2 now is by any means not nimble.
Also 50 kg more than the standard M2 can not come only from additional cooling, except if they made the radiators of black iron (normally they are of highly heat conductive aluminum)

If weight is a main issue then its not the car for everyone but I'll wait for drive reviews and hear what they have to say.

First car in the segment with +400 hp?

M2 Competition with manual gearbox definetly the most exciting M in the current lineup, and definetly a serial winner in the future tests in it's segment...Love it!

That is some old data.....current data for M4 weight is: EU 1635/ DIN 1560kg (manual)

50 kg heavier than the M4! Whats the point of this car?

410HP - M4 Engine....... That's the point, not counting the adjustments oriented to provide razor sharp handling, and to be an iconic machine that will undoubtedly take advantage of all the noise that the M2 did when it was launched.

Its a worthy update that will keep it as the benchmark in this segment and many more above, -
I want to see a Mercedes or Porche 718 or some other Ferrari californias gets with this M2 on a short track without embarrassment.

The heads of BMW know what they have, they did it and above all, they know how to keep it on top!

Why do we always have this confusion when it comes to weights of cars?! I can't even be bothered posting the correct ones. They're out there. I'm fed up of correcting them.

Oh go on then.

The M4 weighed 1,572kg (manual) when it was launched. It has now crept up to 1,590kg due to it not having the CFRP drive shaft. This is the EU standard weight which includes, driver, luggage, and fuel filled 90%. Equipped with the M DCT gearbox, the EU weight increases to 1,615kg.

The comparable M2 Competition figures to EU standard are 1,625kg (manual) and 1,650kg (M DCT).

The M2 Competition is a fat pig.

Not feeling the unibrow grill, otherwise awesome. Nice there is still the 6 speed option, unlike the M4 Comp.

This must be a U.S. thing, because the M4 Competition is certainly still available in Europe with a manual gearbox.

Yes Schmuck! And the rest of the media were invited to a studio in Munich like myself to see the car ahead of embargo to which they were held. The same pictures can be seen in many other publications because they were part of a contingent. Not an exclusive but part of the official media programme.

Audi TT RS is close to 400, circa 395hp I think.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
