For me, that's not the case. It's because it looks distinctly front-wheel drive together with it looking bloated, messy and unremarkably proportioned. History (and the current "traditional" line-up) shows us that if it was RWD it would have to look different as the underlying hardpoints associated with the RWD powertrain result in different geometry around which to style the exterior.if it was RWD I suspect less people would find the need to criticise it as much as they do, even if it happened to look identical.
Of course, the front-end is the specific case in point. The side profile ahead of the A-pillars is lower because the longitudinally mounted engine is canted over by 20 degrees as well as being pushed back into the engine bay. The outcomes speak for themselves - even with today's more rigorous impact protection conformance - RWD BMWs just do look better as a result.
