M2 [Official] BMW M2 Competition

The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range. Official website: BMW M
if it was RWD I suspect less people would find the need to criticise it as much as they do, even if it happened to look identical.
For me, that's not the case. It's because it looks distinctly front-wheel drive together with it looking bloated, messy and unremarkably proportioned. History (and the current "traditional" line-up) shows us that if it was RWD it would have to look different as the underlying hardpoints associated with the RWD powertrain result in different geometry around which to style the exterior.

Of course, the front-end is the specific case in point. The side profile ahead of the A-pillars is lower because the longitudinally mounted engine is canted over by 20 degrees as well as being pushed back into the engine bay. The outcomes speak for themselves - even with today's more rigorous impact protection conformance - RWD BMWs just do look better as a result.

It cops the flack it does because it's a FWD platform, if it was
Absolutely agree with you, if this looked exactly as it does now, but was RWD it wouldn’t get as much criticism. The looks of the car will be fine as people get used it, but because of the wheels that’s are powering it they will love to hate it.

Anyway I saw a beautiful picture of the M2 didn’t mean to side track, for further discussion we can continue to the 2GC thread.

I'm totally with Martin here. If it was a RWD car it would have a longer and lower front hood, bigger prestige clearance and the prolonged line of the A pillar would cross the tire before its center. So no way for a RWD car to look that way.

but because of the wheels that’s are powering it they will love to hate it.

That's absolutely NOT the case with me. I've accepted BMW make FWD cars now. Times have changed. BMW is not the BMW of the 80s, pure, and solely about driving pleasure and nothing else. I'd happily buy the F40 1er, even if it doesn't look as good as the F20. But, you know what? The F20 isn't built any more.

The 2er GC looks awful from the side in terms of proportions, but the WORST thing about the car is that if you removed the badges I would swear blind it was a KIA. It looks extremely un-BMW-like. And that's a problem for me.

This whole line of thinking is wrong. It is impossible to get such a poorly proportioned car with a regular BMW RWD platform with longitudinal I6 engines.
You can't get the same car with FWD, that's the whole point.

The looks are not fine, and people (BMW fans) will NOT get used to it.

Same as my answer above, it doesn't work like that.
And I am not even criticising the design details (which are all around very bad), I am strictly hating the parts that will never be changed, which are the butt ugly KIA-like FWD proportions and technical underpinnings..... never mind the ridiculous hood shutline, crazy rear, nonsensical number plate placement, cheap weird interior because of the FWD (that flimsy low tunnel particularly)

It's measured against a car that doesn't exist (a RWD version of itself), and frankly that's not fair.

Or maybe it's measured against similar sized Bimmers, like the E36 and E46. Or the 1er or 2er coupe.

Is that why the car receives criticism for its atypical design ?, although for me it is not bad
The brand is known for being a good strategist, there must be something we are not seeing

I really don't think there's some conspiracy or anything going on. The car is a clear A3, A sedan and CLA rival. And they made it because they wanted to maximise the UKL (or whatever the name was) platform sales.

Current 1er should (or could) have been a BEV xdrive car, imo.

My God, sorry for the Off topic guys!

Amico mio... You sure you talk about M2 and not the 2er GC?
I am talking specifically about the 2er GC brother. Not sure how the context is getting mixed up. M2 is perfection.

Edit: I think you've missed the gist of this conversation mate. Hovabong made a controversial reference to the 2er GC in his posting of an M2 Comp pic. You'll then see that posts from me and klier make more sense.

Not sure how the context is getting mixed up.

Me neither. It's pretty clear that people are talking about the 2er GC and its FWD proportions. Looking at the ratings @PanterroR has given people, he either has misread entirely the points being made, or he absolutely loves the 2er GC. He also didn't appreciate my "fist/room service" analogy, which is pretty disappointing considering I spent a good 20 minutes coming up with it.

This guy has many positive things to say about the Competition compared to the original M2, especially the handling as he has owned both cars

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
