2 Series [Official] BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
This also means that the 2-er Coupe and Convertible are doing a bout 50,000 units a year between them. This is certainly comparable to the 1-er Coupe and Convertible.

If I recall correctly: 70k per year, combined (AT + GT). So, they exceeded the targeted sales for more than 50%. Not bad! (y)

If that was the sales projection, then how is production output high enough to meet this sensational demand?

Initial sales projection is not a static thing. It's dynamic. When getting much more pre-orders then planned and / or approaching the targeted sales figure fasted than projected the sales & production plans change accordingly.

I'm sure at some time they increased the projected sales to 80k, then 90k etc to feed the bigger demand. How can they do it? Due to very flexible production - when some model demand decreases, so does its production. And vice versa: when the demand is higher, so is the production. If the capacities allow such production reallocation. Usually they do. Usually a slowly selling, outgoing, less expensive model (also usually heavily discounted) production is decreased to allow bigger production of newer, more expensive, less discounted models etc. I'm sure they were able to increase AT & GT production at the expense of eg. 1er hatch or outgoing X1 production etc.

Initial sales projections OF A COMPLETELY NEW MODEL (not being offered before) are a lottery. They are based on past & existing situation in the market, and projection how fast the segment will grow in the future. And usually such projections are VERY conservative!!! Even bigger lottery is a sales projection of a new model in a new segment - like in the case of eg. first SAC, first 4dr coupe etc.

So, numbers (sales projections) they mention in public are usually OLD, projections before any sales activities whatsoever (eg. pre-orders), usually not very precise ... And usually they are used for PR purposes - to show what an astronomic increase in demand happened, and what a sales hit the model is. But be sure those corrected sales & production planes were in place even before pre-ordering process is closed. Since they already know if the demand is higher or lower than projected - and then the plans change according to that new info.

But as I said: only the very initial sales projections are known to the general public. Everybody does that. I remember how MB raved about some models how much higher the demand was compared to the initial sales projections. It's a great PR stuff. :D(y)

2er AT & GT are sales hits ...

157,144 2 Series vehicles were sold in 2015; more than 107,000 of those sales were either Active Tourers or Gran Tourers.

:)
Unbelievable... I wouldn't have thought of these figures in my worst nightmare. Congrats to BMW though :)

Seems like BMW under-estimated the number of badge whores out there.

Seems like BMW under-estimated the number of badge whores out there.

It's been received quite well in the reviews (at least the ones that focus on it's intended use, rather than taking it to a race track and complaining it's not RWD), so while I don't doubt the roundel has lured a lot people out of their Fords, Volkswagens, Opels/Vauxhalls, Renaults and whatever else, the product itself stands up well enough to deserve longer term sales success, rather than just badge whores.

... but let's not take our eyes of the prize here... Autocar summed it up quite well:

But the truth is that only the B-Class really offers the combination of desirability and practicality that the Active Tourer seeks to emulate – and on performance, refinement, economy and balanced ride comfort and handling dynamism, the BMW beats the Mercedes resoundingly.

I still maintain the AT/GT's were stupidly called 2-ers (instead of 1-ers) to align them squarely against the B-Class in the market place... so I see beating the B as BMW's number 1 goal, which they seem to have achieved. I wonder if the next B Class will get a longer 7 seat version.

Dataforce data shows the 2er Gran Tourer, 2er Active Tourer, X4 and 4er Gran Coupe, are bringing new customers to BMW.

Eg. the "conquest rate" of 2er Gran Tourer is 71.3%. 24.7% of the 2er GT buyers previously drove a VW, 9.7% an Opel and 6.7% drove a Mercedes before shifting to 2er GT.

BMW 2er Active Tourer "conquest rate" is of 48.4%. 11.7% buyers coming from VW, 11.0% from Mercedes (mostly former B-class owners). Owners of 2er AT who have previously driven a BMW, mostly shift from a 3er, 1er or X1.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Spied Hiding Nip And Tuck
The plug-in hybrid 225xe prototype was caught on camera near BMW's headquarters in Munich.

Introduced roughly three years ago, the 2 Series Active Tourer brought a double premiere for Bayerische Motoren Werke as it was the company’s first-ever production car with a front-wheel-drive layout and at the same time the first minivan. It seems the people carrier will soon receive a mid-cycle refresh, but the changes are likely going to be borderline unnoticeable judging by the small amount of camouflage applied on this prototype. Without the disguise, the car would have probably flown under the radar during its testing rounds near BMW's headquarters in Munich, Germany.

The “Hybrid Test Vehicle” lettering on both front doors along with the second fuel cap state the obvious fact we are dealing with the eco-friendly 225xe, a plug-in hybrid variant of the MPV. Already we can see the headlights’ “angel eyes” have the new look with a more angular shape like on other recent BMW models.

The Life Cycle Impulse will also bring some cosmetic tweaks at the back, but nothing to write home about taking into account only the lower section of the bumper was camouflaged. The prototype was rocking the taillights of the current 2 Series Active Tourer, but things could change in time for the production model as BMW might come up with slightly revised graphics.

Some novelties inside the cabin are likely on the agenda as well, such as an up-to-date iDrive infotainment system, additional trim and upholstery options, and other miscellaneous items. Rounding off the facelift will likely be new alloy wheel designs and possibly fresh paints to spice things up.

BMW is expected to introduce the 2 Series Active Tourer LCI in the latter part of the year and then it’s going to apply pretty much the same changes to the MPV’s seven-seat sibling, the slightly larger Gran Tourer.

I don't like the idea of any FWD BMW or MPV they should have left it to MB, however I do think it looks good especially in M sport guise. I keep thinking it must be a new kind of BMW everyone I see it.

Rumor: BMW plans 2 Series Active Tourer successor, future Gran Tourer canceled

The next BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is supposed to be more handsome than the current MPV. The second edition – codename U08 – will arrive in 2021 and is based on an optimized version of the current front-wheel drive platform. At the same time, the Gran Tourer is being scraped and won’t follow the steps of the smaller Active Tourer.

The next 2 Series Active Tourer will be able to increase its length and wheelbase, this means more space for the rear passengers and in the luggage compartment. There is little change in positioning also: the price range reaches from just under 30,000 to just over 40,000 euros.

The highlights of the future Active Tourer include new LED and OLED lights, navigation and control systems, a new display technology building on micro-optics and holography, and a head-up display with augmented-reality representation. In doing so, an additional display level is introduced, which provides important information on the current driving situation in the primary field of view. The gesture control introduced in the 7er is enhanced by additional touch-sensitive input functions and in the second step by an integrated view control.

The drive technology of the next 2 Series Active Tourer will not change much. Petrol and diesel will produce more power and torque, the plug-in hybrid is combined with the 48-volt electrical system, and 252 hp 230i is available on demand. The electrified rear axle has been maintained, with the 65 kW electric motor being replaced by a stronger 80 kW engine. An M Performance version with all-wheel drive and up to 300 HP strong 2.0-liter four-cylinder is conceivable, but not yet greenlit.

As part of the Active Drive offensive, additional stability control systems are developed, of which especially the brake-by-wire technology is also relevant for the front-wheel drive. Here, stability control and brake system in a single electro-hydraulic unit are combined, which has no brake booster, vacuum pump, cables and control devices. The lightweight and compact component shortens the stopping distance by rapid pressure build-up.

The current 2 Series Active Tourer has been successful in Europe, which will likely remain the main market for the quirky, yet practical and premium minivan.

Great that we've seen the last of the Grand Tourer. In principal it's a justified car in the line up as there aren't any premium MPV on the market. Unfortunately the Grand Tourer wasn't the most practical MPV, and the jittery ride in combination with the high price leaves it with few strengths.

Strange because I don't see any Activer Tourers at all where I live, everyone buys the Grand Tourer.

Strange as Grand tourer seems more popular on the roads in UK but yeah it looks crap.

Ugly as sin. Saw one in Cape Town with M wheels and badges. There's nothing sporty about this ugly piece of crap, and the interior was atrocious too.
