Still, despite that, the VW D platform was one of the best in the world at the time.Upon its debut, I found the pre-FL Conti appealing, but today, I don't think its exterior has aged well.

People forget what an outstanding car the VW Phaeton was (and still is). So there is no doubt the 2003 Bentley Continental GT, that shared that platform, was a first-class product.
What I find somewhat amusing is the sculpting leading to the front lights adds quite a bit of character yet that same element that was seen on the Jag S-type was lambasted some 15 years ago. But then again, that may have to do with Jag being trapped in a design black-hole that over-relied on retro elements.
I am not denying the engineering that went into the Phaeton/ContiGT platform. But those FWD proportions had no place on a Bentley. Also some of the details just looked plebian, especially as time wore on. Maybe I am fickle, but pushing the front wheels closer to the corners and having a greater distance between the beginning of the front door and aft of the front wheel well makes a world of difference. All those inches matter! (That's what she said?)

However, the center console layout now resembles the new range of cars from the VAG group. It's a breath of fresh air to see the end of the Phaeton center console layout.

It is optional in the A8. But I can't think of any others.Besides the Panamera which other VAG car has a continuously running centre console and arm rest?
