A3/S3/RS3 Official: Audi RS3

The Audi A3 is a small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by Audi AG since September 1996. The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
I talked to a guy who had the oportunity to drive RS3. He wasnt impressed. Quick in straighline but too much understeer and unstable in high speed. He was more impressed by TTS and find it to be a better car. Personally it doesnt sound like rs3 is Audis best effort.

The TTS/RS is 200kg lighter than the RS3, so not a huge surprise it feels much better to drive. I can't really see the point of the RS3. It is too expensive & heavy to be considered a hot hatch and being only available in Sportback form I believe the slightly cheaper S4 is a much better buy.

It doesn't sound like Audi are at their work, it sounds like AMS are. Does the letters AMS stand for "Audi Must Succeed" ;)

Remove the two outers (AMS and Sport Auto) and you are left with consistent times, is there any other data from else where in the world to see just how big a variation there is?

I don't think that AMS is biased towards Audi. Atmospheric conditions are very important for turbo cars, maybe that's the reason for the good times.

Not only that but it's got a much more advanced awd system with the option to add their eLSD as well.

Though if you get to try both the S3 and RS3 together you can actually see the improvement that quattro made with the car and on the road it's not at all bad because unlike the track you never can really get to show up the failings in it's chassis.

A drop in weight and a most of that to come off the front would be of more benefit than throwing more power at it.

Looks like the RS3 is getting a bump in power.

The TT RS in America has 360hp but is only available with a 6 speed (sadly). Did Audi possibly give the US the plus's engine? Might be the different emission standards here, although I always thought they were pretty strict.

Well, for the time being the U.S. model has the most power yes,but I've never heard it be referred to as "plus" by AOA.

The only thing that keeps the RS3 from being a trully great hot-hatchback is the tons of understeer you get. That's the only thing that should be corrected. The power is comming from an exceptional engines and the looks are indeed very good. It's quite easy for an average to go illegally fast in this car and the only issue is understeer.

^The understeer it suffers are barely noticeable on public roads, even driving like a noob but I have to agree it shouldn't have been there in the first place. On a plus note the new Merc A45 by all accounts is controllable on the throttle and will produce a bit of drift on a corner exit proving that Haldex isn't the problem here.

Maybe Audi will have this sorted with its replacement.

The RS3 is very fast in the straight line speed.

Yes the RS3 is very fast. That is why the Audi Quattro with F4-L layout and FI I5 making 400 PS is my dream Audi. The worst thing is that it exists. They just need to produce it.

That's why the next Audi RS3 will use MQB platform, then the understeer its not any problem. Hope so. Also its lighter, and that is a good thing too.

One thing bothering me always, why Audi doesn't put engines behind the front axle? Then Audi's doesn't understeer so much.

I have good feeling about the next Audi RS3. This is one good example about that. On this clip, the driver has better tyres(semislicks), better springs on he's the RS3. And doesn't even understeer so much, if have to compare with the stock Audi RS3. Point of these is, the next Audi RS3 is much more lighter, much more powerful, better platform/springs, and you will get semislicks tyres in option.

And here is a same driver.

In that second clip there was no flick in to get the weight transferring so I reckon the rear wheels where locked up to get the tail to slide.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
