Will beat the laser-light equipped BMW i8 to market
Audi and BMW have been locked in a war of words over who will launch the first production model with laser lights and it looks like the four-ringed brand will come out on top as they have just unveiled the R8 LMX.

Described as the "world's first production car with laser high beams," the R8 LMX features laser headlights that have four high power laser diodes which emit white light at a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin. The lights are activated at 60 km/h (37.3 mph) and greatly enhance "visibility and safety." The model also has a camera-based sensor system that detects other cars and actively adjusts the light pattern to "exclude them."

Besides the lighting technology, the R8 LMX has an Ara Blue exterior with carbon fiber flics and a fixed rear wing. The model also has gloss black tailpipes, carbon fiber ceramic brake discs and exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior changes are limited but the LMX comes nicely equipped with Fine Nappa leather seats, Sepang Blue contrast stitching and Ara Blue accents. There's also an Alcantara headliner, matte carbon fiber trim and illuminated door sill plates.

Power is provided by a 5.2-liter V10 engine that develops 570 PS (419 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb ft) of torque. It is connected to a seven speed S tronic transmission and a quattro all wheel drive system which enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph).

The R8 LMX is currently available for order and German pricing starts at €210,000. Production will be limited to 99 units and the first deliveries are scheduled for this summer.

BMW offer a car with laser headlights and it's innovative, ground breaking and futuristic. Audi do it on one of their cars and it's desperate.

Audi were the first manufacturer to put LED headlights on a production car. And they weren't options like LASERs are on the i8. They were STANDARD. Shall we all assume that BMW following them with LED headlights on their cars was "desperate" too?

Posts like this from Scott make me think that if I was his superior I would be seriously telling him to reel his neck in when on public forums. Many companies frown deeply on employees being active on internet forums whilst making themselves known as working for that company. You're either posting as a private individual or as a representative of BMW. To mix both doesn't make you OR BMW look good at all.

^ I think what he meant was this " the first production model with laser lights"

For me that is indeed "desperate.

^^Imagine if a spokesperson for BMW (or any company) utters things he has. He would have been fired long long ago.

It might very well be, but it doesn't behoove a "public spokesperson" of a company to publicly disparage a competitor.

BTW, is this the successor to R8 GT?

And BMW haven't said that about the i8?

All these companies are as bad as each other trying to get "one-up" on the competition. BMW are no better than Audi, so if I was Scott I would just refrain from making comment because he just looks childish.

I would REALLY like @SCOTT27 to explain why Audi is "desperate". As far as I can tell, this R8 GT successor has come out of nowhere. There have been a few spy shots on the 'Ring, but nothing much publicly to talk about. The i8 on the other hand has been brought out like a trophy at every motor show for years, in concept form, then another concept, and yet we've only just had the first drives. They've milked that cow DRY! In the meantime though Audi have been quietly getting on with their development and have suddenly hit us with this updated R8, and LASER headlights.....

I think the "development" are different for this "update" than the from zero developed I8. But if indeed the R8 is sooner with laserlight than the i8 it is AUDI marketing versus BMW marketing: 1:0

You're clearly missing the point.

It's not about the car the laser lights are on. It's purely about the laser lights themselves. BMW have been milking the i8 for years and the LASER lights were part of that. As it happens Audi were working on them all along.....

You talked about "R8 GT successor" and "updated R8".

I on the other hand only talked about the laser lights. Don't turn the things around.

But let's talk now about the R8.....

Seriously, I haven't the foggiest idea what you're wittering on about.

Scott is claiming Audi are "desperate" with these LASER lights. They're not.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
