The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

If they really wanted an i4 SL, then here is what they should have done.

  • SL35 at <$80,000 with the M139L and 375bhp
  • SL43 at ~$100,000 with the M256 and 425bhp
  • SL53 at ~$120,000 with the rumoured AMG i6 with 475bhp
  • SL55 at ~$150,000 with the M177 and 525bhp
  • SL63 at ~$180,000 with the M178 and 585bhp
If you're gonna have an i4 AMG SL, and you want to position it as a cruiser, do it at the right price.
Mercedes have no real direction with this car below the 55. They want to rebrand the SL as a proper sports car once again, but they also want to appeal to the old man cruiser demographic?
Pick one or if you want both, have better segmentation.

I don't think they were going for the old main crowd, they just wanted a lower price point. A 110K 4-cylinder SL is a terrible purchase.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W121) is a two-door luxury roadster produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. Internally referred to as W121 (BII or B2), it was first shown in prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show, and was available with an optional removable hardtop.

The 190 SL presented an attractive, more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. Both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear. Instead of the 300 SL's expensive purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe, the 190 SL's R121 structure used a shortened unitary floorpan modified from the W121 base saloon.[2]

The 190 SL was powered by a new, slightly oversquare 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) Type M121 BII 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine. Based on the 300 SL's straight six,[3] it had an unchanged 85 mm bore and 4.3 mm reduced 83.6 mm stroke, was fitted with twin-choke dual Solex carburetors, and produced gross 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS).[3] In detuned form, it was later used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models.

The car was available either as a soft-top convertible (initially priced at DM 16,500/US$3,998[4]) or with removable hardtop (DM 17,650/$4,295). A small third-passenger transverse seat was optional. During its first years the 190 SL was available as a sports-racing model with small perspex windscreen and spartan one-piece leather covered bucket seats and aluminium doors. In 1959, the hardtop's rear window was enlarged.

What about those older clients, women, and some men who don`t want the hard-core AMG experience? they just want a luxury cruiser SL.
The 43 fills those shoes perfectly, while still having enough power to get down effectively. I think the SL43 is right where it needs to be.
But then dont call it AMG….
This name promise so much, well it used to promise…..

It is an AMG product through and through. The M139 4-cylinder, the heart of the SL43 is a "one man, one engine philosophy"
(The M256 I6, while great, is not an AMG engine.)

Raz, in his Remove Before Race video of the SL43, @27:12, says he sees a lot of the SL43 on the road, more so than the V8 versions.
The people he sees driving them are older people, particularly ladies.
---
Mercedes needs to contact these owners, buy back their vehicles, and send them to the crusher. Let's cancel the SL43 and call it a day.

When you take off the car enthusiast hat, though, and look at this model through the perspective of a person with means that wants something nice that does not consume much, driving a “four-banger” SL could be attractive.

It would be like some kind of Oxymoron

You think what he sees on the road should actually trump worldwide sales figures? They need to chase the segment that was proven to be dying off based on a few cars he saw on the road?

M

^Oh no, not at all.
That is just one area. We need to see what the sales figures do worldwide to draw that conclusion.
The SL43 was just bought to our shores not too long ago. We will probably need to wait until mid or late 2024 to see how it will do compared to its big brothers.

I don’t doubt it will be popular because it is the cheapest way into an SL.

It's a 4 cylinder. Might as well go electric at that point if you're looking for efficiency and large power numbers. A 4 cylinder would probably ruin the experience of the car and doesn't belong in an SL or any flagship luxury coupe/cabrio.

So the inevitable has happened quicker than I thought. The SL43 just recently started to be sold here. Not many people want a 4 cylinder SL.
I don’t know about markets elsewhere, but in the UK the car market is under-going a reckoning. You can get £10,000 of almost any similar priced car whether advertised or not.

Bad timing for the SL43. Has the C63 hit showroom floors yet?

All luxury items are taking a big hit. The watch market is moving towards a buyers market. The Pateks and the APs of the world are around 30-60% cheaper than last couple of years

911s can be had at cost or at a substantial discount on the used market.

Used G wagens are finally cheaper than cost etc….

Used Ferraris are softer etc…

Every bubble has peak signals. During the 2005-2008 bubble it was Dubai property being resold 3-4 times before completion.

During this bubble it was Salt Bae. Paying exuberant amounts of money in hope that a guy will sprinkle rock salt on your beef - all for Instagram clout.
