The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

Mercedes introduces the SL 55 in Germany. Since the SL 43 sells rather slow, to put it mildly, and German customers are reimporting the V8 SL 55 from surrounding countries like Switzerland, the SL 55 is available straightaway for a base price of € 166.000. The SL 43 is now priced at € 127.000 (former RRP was € 118.000 ).

Nobody wants a 4-cylinder SL lol.

The SL is a huge swing and miss by MB. Granted the luxury touring roadster market was dead and Mercedes had to do something.
They made an attempt to dip into Porsche's market. The problem is they are only targeting a minute fraction of that market. The majority of 911s sold are coupes and and aren't turbos or GTs. So, MB is essentially going after 911 turbo S cab customers. That's an incredibly small sliver and very hard to lure that fiercely loyal base away. Further, they did nothing to lure them. Well, until now, by offering $10k incentive to Porsche owners.

We're actually starting to see used AMG GT sales go up, and seeing a lot of Porsche driving enthusiast. I just sold a 2nd one to a client who said it's the best street to track car he's ever owned.

You don't even need a V8 in the SL because Porsche isn't offering V8s. The I6 would do great. Offer a non-AMG version in a coupe or targa style top. Mercedes execs really shouldn't be this blind.

I agree with everything except the part about the V8. A SL is about the V8. To me the SL55 is the best buy by a mile. Which version sells better in your shop?

We made the mistake of getting mostly 63s, before pricing had been announced. The 55 will sell better, but it's such a low volume unit either way.
My response to the V8 thing would be it's not an SL, at least not in the traditional sense.. It's an AMG, with the SL name on it. The SL has traditionally been a luxury, touring roadster. This is a sports car. So, the buyer for the "SL" isn't that person. It's the person who will buy the 6 cylinder Porsche without ever lamenting there isn't a V8 offered. If Mercedes is going to survive in this segment, they need to truly know the segment.

It's right under their nose. Most the byer's for the AMG GT are coupe buyers. The convertibles don't do as well. Mercedes already has a successful place with 4-seater cabrios.

The only thing is that the current I6 would need a total rework to compete with Porsche’s legendary flat 6. The SL AMG models before always had a V8. The SL still isn’t a true sports car if all the reviews are to be believed. A 911 is still superior in that regard. Well I would think that’s why they’re basically making the next AMG GT a coupe version of the SL??

no, but.....places like Macau/Hong Kong/China, they do! they'd be happy with a 2 litre! Friend in Macau pays double/triple the UK price by the time it's registered. and taxed!

Totally agree with fact they have essentially gone after Porsche cabriolet buyers. Should have had a hard top option. End of.

It’s still a joke, doesn’t matter. I seriously doubt China is a strong market for the SL, as they have little to no fresh air? Yeah the hardtop version will be the new GT.

yea, the little to no fresh air! didn't think about that! haha for any other hard top model, the smaller engine is popular there.....but they have chosen a very narrow market already! They didn't need to make a separate model for the hard top though, they could have made one of each or a hard fold down roof. It's not like they care about weight saving.

Hello everyone, first post on this forum someone has news for the SL 63 E-Performance?

This channel always cracks me up with the “80’s porn” soundtrack, late nineties style of editing and oldies presentation style.
Lol this presenter has been with the program since the 80's so he probably has got an iron fist on the video editing. Look at a flashback to 1983 and his test of the 380SL, it hardly looks different to the editing on this new SL video except the presenter has lost some hair and is much thinner.

The R107 is growing into quite a classic, huh! I see every once in a while some 500 SL models that were grey-market imported back in the mid-eighties here in the U.S.. The european style and bumpers transform the design into something that the designers originally intended. I would love to find a good condition red/palomino brown 500 SL one day.

I think the folks at AMG are up to the task in regards to crafting a 6 cyl. power plant. As it stands, the SL is a great car, but I'm not sure MB really knew what they were ultimately hoping to accomplish.

With the AMG only branding I agree, I think the car itself is on point, if overpriced.

M

The regular SL buyer doesn’t like the AMG only treatment. Quitte unnecessary too, because the Mercedes-Benz brand has more than enough cachet. The SL drivers I know, say they’d like a non AMG treated V8 SL.
Also they are more interested in the coming Coupé than the roadster. The Porsche 911 Cabrio owners I know, as potential new to the brand buyers, are not changing to the SL roadster. Main reason: it’s not a 911…
