The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

The regular SL buyer doesn’t like the AMG only treatment. Quitte unnecessary too, because the Mercedes-Benz brand has more than enough cachet. The SL drivers I know, say they’d like a non AMG treated V8 SL.
Also they are more interested in the coming Coupé than the roadster. The Porsche 911 Cabrio owners I know, as potential new to the brand buyers, are not changing to the SL roadster. Main reason: it’s not a 911…

The problem is that those buyers are gone. Lets be real here, it's just branding. The car itself isn't that much different from previous SL63/SL65 models. The new AMG GT is the SL coupe.

What I’ve been told, is that the new one is much more sporty, harsh in the way it drives compared to the predecessor. The old one almost drove like a S class. So, I wouldn’t say it’s only branding.

My friend's 75 year old father just got an SL63 LOL
I am going to check it out for sure. He can't stop talking about how much more comfortable it is compared to his now gone 992.

It’s been covered here before. Most of the people wanting a cushy riding SL are too old. Mercedes has been desperately trying to lower the SL buyer’s median age for the last decade.

Interesting. The clients I’m talking about are in their late 40ies. Apparently too old for Mercedes.

I somehow have this love affair with the SL43. It is the perfect car for a quiet Sunday drive or night out with your better half.

In that postcard, it can be seen that the silhouette is beautiful, the fall of the tail and the rest emulates the beautiful and stylized Maybach 6, in the SL unfortunately ruined by that disgusting front equal to the A class that makes it lose much charm or all charm ....

I was usually defending that design since the CLS, but I already caught myself mistaking the CLS with the A-Class. The SL though follows that design looks very different, but..

For all 3 it looks really good IMO (yes I also mean the CLS), but the same design for each segment was a huge mistake. The SL takes no profit from that.

Of the few times I agree with them, everything is fine but something doesn't add up, especially after seeing the included shots of the AMG GT convertible.

Sigh. 111K for a 4-cylinder SL? NO WAY. It has less power than the C43? Talk about insult to injury.
