SL-Class [Official] All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

It's possible.

But again, AMG needs to find away to make them a lot lighter if they want racier versions.
As they are, they're fine Sporty Grand Tourers. Lessen the weight and they'll be world beaters. Even without a power bump
The only area of significant weight reduction would be deletion of AWD system, aka having a high performance RWD. But I don’t think the current model’s ethos supports that.

I suppose. Though the SL43 is RWD only isn't it?

But still. Even with AWD, surely they could find ways to make it lighter still. There are other sports cars which are AWD and considerably lighter. Perhaps it's a safety issue.

I dunno, perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic.

This could be a Pro version.
My thought as well.
An SL63 Pro version would slot in between the SL63 and SL63 E-Performance perfectly.

You keep hammering home about the weight. I suggest you go take one for a spin in the real world.
Yes, some weight can be felt, but I would say a great deal of it is masked in the handling and feel of the whole car. The SL63 is light on its feet in real life. The steering rack coupled with the rear axle steering will take you by surprise on how fast reacting the whole car is in real world situations. It feels like a go-cart that is anticipating your every move in real life.
If you want to go lightweight you would have to take away its 4Matic AWD and 4-wheel steering capabilities. Mercedes AMG will probably do this with a Black Series GT63. The SL63 is beyond good enough as it is.

The 4 cylinder sl43 is unwanted. 50% depreciation in two years in nearly new condition is brutal. This is cheaper than a brand new a45 or entry level e class with a few options.

At least in the US, even the V8s got hit with over 50% depreciation. MSRP no options is over 180k, and these weren't even the cheapest examples, there is one listed for under 85k.

No surprise on the SL43. That was a lame attempt at lowering the entry price of the SL when all it did was highlight how overpriced the entire model line is.

I see SL 43s everywhere now. Two just on my run earlier today. Last weekend I stopped by my local dealer on my run and saw not only SL 43 but also the GT 53 two door. I was really surprised, as I thought the GT 43 was not going to make it to U.S. It looked pathetic, I must say. The different lower bumper with the skinnier tires made it look (to my eyes) almost CLE-ish.

The SL63 direct competitor, the M8 Competition cabriolet is also getting hit with a 50% depreciation if not more on some examples.
Droptops don`t move that well. These numbers are basically localized. In one state or country droptops might sell very well, in others not so much.

MBUSA has dealers begging for mercy as they are being flooded with SL43s, which have 100+ days on market statistics. Lease specials abound, which was anticipated when the 43 varient was announced ( the variant no one asked for). This problem is compounded by the fact that the SL55/SL63s are taking an absolute beating on the second-hand market. Less than 1 year old SL63s are cheaper than SL43s.

I fear that there may be no next SL as MB has lost plot on what the SL should be - it’s not the 2000’s anymore where the R230 was the darling of the segment and they could pump out huge volumes. MB should have adjusted expectations to make it a low volume, more-exclusively built car, however, they are chasing profits and failing as a result to meet their expectations. And no, the badge-engineered Maybach SL680 isn’t the solution.

Also, after 3 years of trying have the design grown on me, I still struggle to fully embrace it. It’s just not pretty to my eyes… Maybe it’s just me. I have a “cheap” R230 SL500 and I always find myself looking back at the design. It’s an impressive feat that the car is a looker despite being a hard top convertible. The design was shockingly revolutionary when it debuted and has aged nicely.

Drop prices, kill the 43 and replace it with a 53 I6 model with a price decrease compared to the 43. Drop prices and up power on the 55 and 63.

That'll do a job. Because the new SL is a very pretty car. Maybe also allow the rear seats to be a zero-cost option for those who want to make it a 2-seater, as they do with the GT.

SL53 with 476hp/650Nm RWD
SL55 with 525hp/750Nm AWD
SL63 with 625hp/850Nm AWD

While you're at it do the same for the AMG GT
GT53 with 476hp/650Nm RWD
GT55 with 525hp/750Nm AWD
GT63 with 625hp/850NmAWD
GT63 Pro with 640hp/900Nm AWD

And then you can have your homologated GTR or whatever AMG has planned.

I like this but I'd add 25hp to the SL55 and 50 to SL63 if nothing else just to give some wow factor.

Dropping the AWD is anything but significant.

I saw a nice SL driving around the other day. When I checked the licence plate it was a 4 pot with a price of almost 300k.

LMAO. This is a 100k max car. And the 4 cylinder is absolutely retarded. I'd take a next gen EV Cayman over a 4 pot SL any day of the week.

Its something like 100-200kg saved, which is not insignificant.

I'm sure there are other ways they can reduce the weight, if they try, but it would require more extensive changes. I know the platform supposedly doesn't support it, but popping in a transaxle on a homologated GT-R (and maybe even an SL-R) at the expense of the back seats, would be really cool.
Might not necessarily save a huge amount of weight, but would definitely positive affect the weight distribution.
