The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

Spoke too soon earlier in this thread. My salesperson called to discuss options...I think I'm going to skip the track-based stuff this time around and enjoy the ride. That means no AMG performance seats and dynamic plus package.

They're really pushing me to order the sage green interior and spec something that doesn't clash on the exterior, which is different than the china blue on black I had imagined.

A sage green interior ? Maybe some form of medium tan or a brown would be an exterior color that "works" with that interior choice. A "saltimbocca" SL. A combination that Gordon Ramsey would approve of.

It doesn't drive like any other Mercedes and yet it feels 100% true Mercedes. An extremely underappreciated GT and IMO one of the very best.
Reviews will be incredibly interesting. E.g does it drive like a:
-GT
-GT Sportscar
-Supercar

People woll need educated on what this AMG built SL actually is. Furthermore there will be a question mark over how much more agile it feels to drive than a comparably heavy AMG saloon or SUV.

I love it, classic proportions and minimalist style. Its amazing how compact it looks. Hard to believe it’s larger than the previous generation.

Since the inception of the "SL" back in the early 1950s and throughout the course of its' nearly 70 year history, the development of the car and what it represents was never as linear as that of the various rear-engined Porsches from the 356A to the current 992. Hence, a changing of the guard may prove to be more challenging for M-B than is the case with its Zuffenhausen neighbour. That being in mind, M-B (AMG) appears to have done a pretty good job with the R232. It will blow more than a few away-and it should be assessed favourably by the general automobile-affine public. A very solid, handsome exercise rather than one that is epic.

Blow away which cars?

The performance/prestige market has significantly changed over recent 10 years. If you can afford the finance, it make more financial sense to a 718 GTS, 992 GT3, Pista etc than flagship BMW or Mercedes for 40-60% less money. Then we have the "have my cake and eat it tot"-SUVs that handle well, are practical and comfortable enough.

As I mentioned in my previous post, reviews will be extremely interesting e.g how it drives compared to an AMG GT, E63 and base 911.

No, no...not blow away cars...but leave some segment shoppers "blown away".;)

What would have been nice to see, is the option of a single car grill and a bumpers without gills!

A "GT Sportscar" wouldn't be far off I'd wager.
All I want of it is to feel like a significantly better version of the last one and I don't see why it wouldn't.
Reviews should be coming any day now.

I just talked to my salesman who said I couldn't order one until the first of the year and they are going to be selling well over sticker.

That's odd, my dealer is taking preorders on the SL, EQS, AMG EQS 53, and the EQS SUV.

Is your dealer asking over sticker price.

Yes, but by how much entirely depends on how well my couple of hours goes with an EQS 580 tomorrow. If I order a EQS of some flavor then the SL will be very close to MSRP. Or if I convince my partner to order a EQS SUV instead of a BMW iX. We're both on the edge of finally owning an EV.
