M3/M4 [Official] 2021 BMW M3 and M4 [G80 & G82]

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

Interesting to see if these numbers will skew more towards the M3 until 2027, stay around the same, or skew to the M4 Coupe. Either way, M3 demand outweighs production from what I see, as BMW seems to be producing the same number of coupes. A common sentiment I see amongst M3 owners is that they like the more traditional BMW proportions (of course, also being a sedan) as opposed to the coupe's Mustang-esque profile, while M4 owners that do enjoy the shape feel it looks more aggressive.

As a follow-up edit: This does prove my theory that BMW fans are more attracted to the traditional proportions of the M3 sedan too in real life.

The E90 M3 sedan sold less than 10k units globally in it's 3-year run. The G80 has sold 25k. BMW sold 34k F80 M3s globally during a 5 year run, and they have sold over 70% of that number in 3 years with the G80.

in 3 years with the G80.
2 years, 2020 hardly counts, the thing started in March 2021, there is a source that indicates the most "relay" dates, in any case it is a bigger success than its predecessors in both cases, (which had already been a huge success ), first time that the M3 is in the lead, I think it is due to the more aggressive approach more "even" than the coupe, with the most aggressive and distinctive grill against that of the normal 3 series

I'm not sure how much effect the grille has cause, I have heard from a few owners say they're unhappy with the grille, but the M3 is such a good package and overall looks good that they can overlook the grille. And yeah, the overall car does look more aggressive.

And yeah, M3 Sedan is now in the lead for a first time, a vast change from the previous generations. The looks absolutely have an effect, the M4's body looks generic, Mustang-inspired, and the "wide"ness is not emphasized enough, unlike the M3 which looks squat and muscular, attack ready.

Such a shame BMW puts more design effort into their M3 Sedan instead of the Coupe, which should be the sportier looking model in my opinion.

Take the E92 M3 for example (my dream car, next to a few others) has properly flared fenders and a solid body line.. the G80 M3 also has properly flared fenders and a solid body line. The G82 M4, on the other hand.. the width is lost in the mass "blank space" of that rear fender, and the body lines are not defined enough.

Hope BMW will re-evaluate the design generation of the Neue Klasse coupes, and take on a more traditional body-styling route with a bigger focus on making it look wide, muscular, and squat, unlike the current generation M4. The new M2 is a decent start, putting emphasis on the body lines and wide fenders. But the M4 is definitely a vision that looked better on paper and in concept arts, and was lost in translation to production form.

I think my point is more in line with what is happening, but I respect your opinion, since the M3 is better and more aggressive this time thanks to the new grille, it is selling more than before, we are talking about a technical tie in sales with the M4 to which if we add the convertible that is M4 exceeds the M3 by thousands of units, we will see in the long run, the tourings are missing here..., the Mustang thing is "not at all" IMO

Yes, further.

My point is there's more to aggression than just the front end. The rest of the body does not look sporty to me like the M3, or previous gen M4/M3 Coupes that had a bigger emphasis on looking wider, with sharper flared fenders. That rear 3/4 area is just a undefined mess imo, very Mercedes in the terms of looking almost soapy, and the fastback roofline is just like the Mustang to me, just doesn't look like a BMW (and others).

Whereas the M3 has the aggressive front and the rest of the body to look sporty, the M4 in my opinion only has the front end going for it.

If it was still called the M3 coupe, sales would be higher.

Could the M2 also now be cannibalising M4 sales more than ever?
There seems to be a misunderstanding, sales of the current M3/M4 are record highs at this point and they will be high by the end of their cycle.
The M3 is selling much more than before

Practicality for many is a much needed concept.

I actually remember this American from awhile ago. Interesting I'm sure she was a huge Mercedes fan! Guess not I'll triple check sometime!🙂

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
