Did you go for the S6 before the G30 LCI was out?

Nope.. after. Don’t get me wrong of the big three BMWs are my favorite drivers cars, but they are no longer the flag bearers in terms of tech like they were in the early to mid teens. Add to that the W213 E is a better drivers car than the G30 in lower trims, I decided that the S6 was the way to go (didn’t care much about the E53).

that said, if I were to go all the way, I suppose the E63s wagon would be my choice out of the bruisers

Congrats on the wrong choice though. An A6 isn't half bad either.

Probably the most complete car I've driven, fuel consumption aside. You get everything - luxury, comfort, performance, dynamics - and, if you shop smart, at a significantly lower price than an M5. In fact, that's the only thing wrong with the M550i - the M5.

How big is the comfort difference between the M5 and M550i? Is the firmer ride a reasonable compromise for the improved agility and better resale value?

Yes they still are.
Congrats on the wrong choice though. An A6 isn't half bad either.

… the X6M50i I drove felt a little sluggish.. didn’t ‘feel’ fast.. the speedo recited a completely different story though. That said, I wish I’d have had some proper seat time in that brute; I’m sure I’d have loved it.

There's no non M 550i. Debadged yes, but without M pack no.

The never brought one to the G31 either only the M550d. Now that’s gone and phenomenal as it is. You can only purchase the 540i/540d as the flagship Touring. Unless you join the exclusive Alpina club.
