4 Series [Official] 2020 BMW 4 Series (G22)

The BMW 4 Series is a range of compact executive cars manufactured by BMW since 2013. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series.

...as previously mentioned on a number of occasions: The F32 will be a very hard act to follow.

My first impressions are anchored in ambivalence.

Hmmmm..... I truly believe this design will work better with the M4 and without the front license plate. This is going to cause quite an uproar.

Some personal observations (purely subjective, of course):

The flank sculpturing is refined with a welcome element of minimalism that I find missing on the 8 series cars. Perhaps the absence of a tacky front wind vent promotes my impressions. Alas, the rear fender/wheelarch visual remains a bit questionable (the "tricycle effect"). The rear-end evokes a "Hey there, Lexus" moment. The grill, to my surprise, works for me. It also appears to me that the height of the hoodline, something that bothers me with the 8 series, has been diminished-a good thing. The cars' silhouette presents an architecture becoming for a 2 door, 4 seat coupe.

Yes, the F32 may be a hard act to follow, as someone said earlier. But the new 4 Series Coupe can hardly be described as a follower.

It does not intend to be a simple successor. It simply breaks former rules and approaches a controversial path. Some may like it, some may not. At least, it does not try to be liked. The G22 is a rebel, like the Bangle era cars.

What is for sure is that the new 4 Series Coupe won't pass by unnoticed and it will certainly ignite either positive or negative passions and feelings. It is bold, powerful, aggressive, compelling, it does not obey to any rules, it wants to be a leader, not a follower.

What I can say for sure is that I like it very, very much! Surely, IRL it will look even better.

It's alright, looks good, but I think BMW has strayed too far from their quintessential BMW design language.

Overall it's not too bad. However why this horrible hood shut line again? It makes such a big difference and kind of destroys the front.

Also the rear badge looks quite big, bigger than normal?

I must admit, I really like it. I'm looking forward to the i4, as I want to replace my Model 3 with it. The only thing that I just can't stand is the hoodline. It just looks out of place (as always).

Initial thoughts:

It looks alright. It certainly follows the 8 series approach more than the F32 approach when it comes to surfacing. I think the absence of some more taut sculpting perhaps presents too much simple sheet metal which is perhaps why it seems a little underwheeled. I don't like the grille mesh itself, or the kidney surround... but, the size of the grille itself isn't a problem for me at all. For the rest of it, it looks pretty decent. I think it's going to be heavily spec dependent for me, and I do not like this colour.

It's a brave move, and whilst I don't think it's provided a stunning outcome, I think it's successfully opened a new design avenue for BMW.

As ever looking forward to the B4. :D
