CLA [Official] 2019 Mercedes Benz CLA

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a series of luxury subcompact executive cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 2013. The first generation was a four-door sedan based on the platform of the W176 A-Class and W246 B-Class compact cars, marketed as a four-door coupé. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz expanded the CLA family to include a station wagon configuration which it markets as a Shooting Brake. As the V177 A-Class sedan took its place as the budget-conscious sedan, the second generation got longer and wider than the W205 C-Class.
First sketches of the new CLA. Apparently the design changed very little from here till production.

I am surprised, the standard bumper is just as aggressive, if not more aggressive than the AMG bumper.

Much better than its predecessor, better looking than the CLS will probably have the nicest looking interior in its class, but the A3 is still the best looking compact sedan on sale.

I wonder if even short people will still bump their head from the side (on the exterior roof) when entering the rear seats..

I think it was a slight error for MB not to have included MBUX with the C-Class facelift, but I get why they didn't. There should be no such excuse for the E-Class facelift though. It can't be this far behind these compact cars. MBUX has already been improved from it's debut in the A-Class according to the press release.

I agree 100%.

Two days ago I helped my neighbor with some lifting. She drives a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe and gave me a ride into town afterwards.

Her car had no MBUX and no touchscreen! I couldn’t believe it. She has to interact with the digital screen via the circular knob in front of the center console armrest. It’s doable but it’s a slow process. This is the newest, updated S-Class Coupe and my “lowly” A-Class has a more advanced infotainment system!

I shoot the latest Range Rovers and Mercedes G-Classes for a car dealership here in Munich. Those new 2019 G-Classes also lack MBUX and touchscreen. It’s essentially an upgraded COMAND system, which I personally feel was already outdated a decade ago for its lack of a touchscreen.

At the end of the day it’s all a question of getting used to the system, but I feel that MBUX is so efficient, easy and comfortable to use with its voice, button and touchscreen interactive qualities. I’ve been using the system in my new A-Class and I honestly can’t imagine driving a car which does not have a system like this: it’s so practical and essential.

The rear bumper to me doesn’t sit low enough. Meaning the bottom of the bumper and where exhaust tips are should have come down lower. Looks too high and leaves too much space between the bottom of the bumper and ground.

The rear lights are so much more attractive than the CLS’s. The rear as a whole for that matter.

well, of course. MBUX should make the previous systems look dated. It's unfortunate that it hasn't been upfitted into the current line, but I wouldn't expect that since the facelift is just a year old. The new S has the touch pads and it is still a wonderful system.

This is definitely going to be a hit. Now it has the interior and look of a Mercedes. I can't wait to see the sales numbers for this and the A Sedan here in the U.S. once they're on the floor together.

I think you misunderstood me. Yes, MBUX makes COMAND look outdated. But COMAND was, at least to me, already outdated years ago in regards to how the operator interacts with it - NO TOUCHSCREEN CAPABILITY.

At the time touchscreen technology was already widely used, quick and practical. But for operating the COMAND system the company still insisted on using a dial and no touchscreen. That’s my beef with COMAND. Even if there is no MBUX on the latest S-Class, there should at least be touchscreen capability.

My father’s 2010 E350 CGI (W212) has COMAND, and when I am driving him somewhere I prefer to use the navigation system in my Samsung Galaxy S8 because I can enter and find the destination quicker than by using the circular dial in the car to engage the COMAND system. It was outdated in 2010 and it’s mega outdated now. If it were touchscreen capable it would still be outdated, but it would also be more comfortable and efficient to use. :)

It depends if you think touchscreen is all that and a bag of chips, and obviously you do. Touchscreens are only as good as the software that supports them and that you are accessing.

Lexus, for example, moved away from touch screen and implemented the mouse pad. The big debate is how easy it is to access menus etc. and most of the systems out there have become to complex, even with touch screens. The MBUX from what I've studied does seem to streamline and make this better.

Personally, I don't like touch screen because of fingerprints, having to reach while driving and the failure rate is higher and replacement cost ridiculous. The current command is certainly not outdated in terms of how it works and what it does compared with BMW, Porsche, Audi and Lexus. I know folks who love the touch pads because they don't have to take their hands off the wheel. I'm one of those. For example, I had ordered an A-class but just pulled the trigger on another c, because of how disappointed I've been with the CLA and GLA. Granted, the new A-class is an improvement but I'm just not ready for cost cut, front wheel drive, entry level. Even if it has a touch screen.

That said MBUX looks to be an impressive leap, which integrates touch in a way that is more intuitive.

When does the A-Class and AMG GT 4-door go on sale here in the U.S. ?

I'm not the biggest fan of the black and orange-trimmed CLA in the press photos, so here's some other pics from the Mercedes-Benz website incase some of you didn't see it.

I am quite impressed with it. I like it far more than the new CLS despite the obvious similiarities.

In photos the CLS' rear has an akward 3/4 angle while the CLS is more harmonious from rear to front. I wasn't looking forward to this car at all and wrote it off as redundant because of the A-class Sedan but it's a little beauty.

Too bad the US will probably get ungainly bumperettes, but hopefully not as bad looking as the wart on the CLS, to deal with US 5mph bumper regulations. I feel MB should be designing the bumpers differently in order to avoid this.

Those are all but irrelevant and totally unnoticeable in real life in being around the CLS. It's only when someone points them out and you think of how the Euro version looks, do you even notice it.

I love to see how here criticize minimal details about the design that at the end of the day are just that, little details, and no one observes the important thing, we are so accustomed to this level of craftmanship we can not see how special it is that such cars exist, like the CLA , where the passion rewards everything else (and now they are even practical but keeping those hot lines) look that interior, is a dream, and is no longer something that can only be accessed in the upmarket but is the basis of the entire line!!!

I can only say that I applaud that the first generation was a success to launch this second, I also applaud the arrival of the 2 series GC and the possible TT four doors coupe, because this type of cars are attractive and captivating, they are the silhouettes that I want to see in movement in my city and decorating the landscape when they stop at a traffic light.

German brands dominate the market by leagues thanks to the fact that they take risks with vehicles like this one.
When Porsche has the balls to make a kind of Cayman four doors coupe, imagine that.
