IS/RC [Official] 2014 Lexus IS

Recent comparison in 'Wheels' the IS gave the BMW335i a good flogging. But then the Australian motoring media hasn't been too kind to BMW's over the last 2-3 years.

Personally after spending 30 minutes in the IS I couldn't help but feel 1/2 of the interior 'technology' was implemented for gimmicky wow factor and showroom appeal, rather than an actual advancement in design and function. I didn't drive the car.

2015 Lexus IS announced with minor updates

Features new LED fog lights
Lexus has announced a series of updates for the 2015 IS.

Starting with the exterior, the entry-level sports sedan gains new LED fog lights which promise to improve visibility.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as there's Siri Eyes Free compatibility and piano black accents on the instrument panel and window switches. The car also gains a new Stratus Gray interior color, an upgraded backup monitor and heated / ventilated front seats on F Sport variants. Last but not least, the model receives a Lexus Enform Remote system that enables users to control certain vehicle functions - such as the door locks and climate control system - from a mobile app.

Engine options carryover and include a 2.5-liter V6 with 204 bhp (152 kW) and a 3.5-liter V6 that develops 306 bhp (228 kW). The entry-level engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission while the 3.5-liter unit is connected to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic gearbox.

When are Lexus going to bring out a turbo engine to replace this dinosaur 2.5L NA V6?

^ it's not true, the BMW looks more stupid :D
The BMW 1 series has the worst front lights of any new car I really hope they can the shape of it for the facelift!

I didn't like the interior of the IS that much what really disappointed me was the lack of space (very cramped in front with little elbow room and little back legroom and headroom) and the quality of some of the center console plastics, it is no where near as spacious as a 3 series or new C-class and quality wise and comfort of seats it is also well behind both German cars.

In my book, this is the ugliest car on sale, along the Nissan Puke. The Cherokee and 1er are beauties compared to this.

Looks much better on the road than us German Car Fans are willing to give it credit for. Mildly arresting, certainly distinctive - its Achilles heel is the lack of class-competitive engines in the new turbo'd dispensation. This thing needs 2.0 litre petrol and diesel turbos like yesterday. Hybrid adds too much cost and complexity in this highly competitive class.

Allow me to disagree, Martin boet.
It looks terrible and rather than appreciate the cohesivity and purpose of the design, as you do when encounter a new car in real life for the first time; I couldn't help thinking how over thought, over designed and over the top it was. Amorphous "predator" grill, tired, laboured headlamps with the separate Nike DRL, the uprising line at the rear fenders which meet those horrible stoplights, etc.
It looks like a tuning company in the Mansory-fashion have taken over the last gen IS.
This is the guy wearing Converse's and huge, bright coloured watch with his suit, on a wedding. Pretending to be different for the sake of it, and being the focus of attention for all the wrong reasons.

I still can't understand why is so difficult for the Japanese to design simple, clean, good looking cars, specially taking in count the minimalistic, discreet approach they have on architecture, furniture, high end electronics or those exquisitely simple luxury watches like the Grand Seiko or The Citizen.

Mazda is head and shoulders above all Japanese brand, design wise.

2021 model year Lexus IS will be a significant redo this fall and not a full redesign, a la F15 X5.

It is being speculated that Toyota is partnering with Mazda for economies of scale, on a new RWD platform, which will launch in 2022 and spawn Mazda, Toyota, and Lexus models off of it.

The Mazda6 is to be replaced by MX-6.

The XE30 IS introduced in May 2013, will remain in production for another 3-4 years.

They will not be utilizing the GA-L modular RWD architecture used by the Lexus LS and LC. Nor the supposedly modular TNGA-N RWD used by the 2019 Toyota Crown and 2021 Toyota Mirai (for some dumbass reason).

2021 Lexus ‘IS 500’ V8 to be last hurrah for 5.0L 2UR-GSE – rumour

There’s still no sign of a next-generation Lexus IS but a rumour has just surfaced which will be of massive interest to fans of the mid-size luxury sedan; a V8 engine for the current model. Lexus IS 500, anyone?

The rumour stems from an Instagram post by allcarnews citing an anonymous ‘insider’ (Allcarnews | ACN on Instagram: “2021 IS 500 WITH V8 COMING ______________________________________ [5/18/20] #acnLexus Last week I posted an updated on the upcoming…”).

Now, before we go any further we should point out that we aren’t necessarily backing the credibility of said insider as we haven’t heard anything from Lexus regarding a new V8 IS sedan.

If anything, the closest thing that Lexus has officially confirmed is a new twin-turbo V8. In a statement in December last year (Lexus LC prototype spotted testing new twin-turbo V8 (video) | PerformanceDrive) the company spoke about its upcoming entry in the Nurburgring 24 Hour race, confirming that the race car based on the LC will use a new twin-turbo V8. The company said:

“It will be the third participation for Lexus LC in the Nurburgring 24 Hours. The team will use what it has learnt in the past two years to improve the car’s performance by adopting a variety of new technologies, including a newly-developed V8 twin-turbo engine destined for use on future road cars such as sports cars.”

Curiously, the last bit of that quote says “road cars”, which means it will probably feature in the upcoming Lexus F models. Lexus is yet to confirm a next-generation IS F, but if it does, it will probably receive the twin-turbo V8. Any future GS F, RC F, and the much-hyped ‘LC F’ are all likely candidates as well.

Back to the concept of the IS 500 though, the Instagram user says the V8 will be shoehorned into the current, albeit modified IS sedan. It says there is a pretty major facelift for the sedan range coming soon, and that a V8 version will come in as the new flagship. The V8 variant, dubbed the IS 500, will apparently adopt wider tracks front and rear and revised suspension to cope with the extra grunt.

There’s also set to be a redesigned front end, incorporating the latest Lexus grille and headlight layout. Meanwhile, the ageing interior of the IS (below) is also in store for a major overhaul for the 2021 facelift.

At the moment the most powerful Lexus IS is the IS 350. It uses a 233kW 3.5-litre V6. However, as the rear end of the RC coupe, which is available with a V8, is pretty much taken from the IS sedan there should be no issue in fitting a nice heavy-duty differential and axles.

Strangely though, it won’t renew the IS F nameplate, apparently. That might seem implausible at first but remember the current LC 500 uses the same V8 engine (below) as the GS F and RC F yet it isn’t strictly an F model and doesn’t include any F badging.

It’s believed the IS 500 V8 will be a last hurrah for the iconic and splendid-sounding 5.0-litre V8 engine. In its latest tune the Toyota-based 2UR-GSE unit is naturally aspirated and runs a high 12.3:1 compression ratio. It also uses Yamaha-designed cylinder heads, titanium inlet valves, and adopts Toyota’s D-4S port and direct injection. At 351kW and 530Nm, it isn’t the most powerful V8 around these days but it does produce one of the best soundtracks – check out our LC 500 engine sound video at the bottom of this story to see what we mean.

According to the rumour Lexus is planning to introduce the 2021 facelift for the IS during the third quarter of this year. The update is said to carry the sedan through until the next generation model comes along – whenever that might be. Lexus’s best-selling models are predominantly SUVs which does put a lot of pressure on the future of its sedans.

I'll faint if they do a V8 IS500. What a enjoyable throwback car it will be.
