M-Class (W166/C292) [Official] 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W166)

The Mercedes-Benz W166 is the third generation M-Class ("ML") range of mid-size luxury SUVs. Facelifted versions renamed to GLE and GLE Coupé. Model codes: W166 (SUV), C292 (SUV coupé). Production: July 2011–2019. Model years: 2012–2019.
In the official film I find it amazing how the driver can get from Cape Town , South Africa to somewhere in Middle America. All whilst his wife is at home wondering "where is my anniversary SLK you cheap bastard?"

New ML at new MB of Manhattan.
They're having a party tonight, wish I was invited.

Definitely looks a lot better in person. Interior is way better than the W164. And yes, the legroom in the back hasn't improved.

My only complaint is that they seem to have gone back to the hidden exhaust for the 350's and below.
Sorry, forgot to snap a pic of the rear.

It looks so damn cheap with those little, ugly wheels. Damn couldn't they at least get some better standard wheels or have one with the AMG pack on it to show at dealer peek-see party?

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Why not bring in a full optioned demo for the event? I'm just glad they seem to have addressed a lot of things I didn't like on the W164 and I just wish MB would make more of the options standard (Keyless Go, at least xenon headlights, leather dash... etc)

Yaz So what is your overall view on the car after seeing it..Also seems you have seen the very standard version so can you say what improvements you see over the current model..Also interior wise how does it feel in real looks and quality...IS it built as good as the E and in terms off rear leg room would u say its as good as teh E or less also can teh rear bench or seast move like teh R class...

Compared to our current ML, I personally love it. It's definitely way better than the 164 quality wise. The plastic feels and looks different than the W164's. I hate our cheap, plastic-y dash (love the leather dash in the ML63), the standard dash in the 166 is way better and I love that slap of wood, which the 164 lacks even with a full leather dash.

Hated the location of the seat controls and turn signal stalk, now they're where they belong on every Benz. Controls and switches on the inside seem to come from the E & C or they seem to look and feel like the ones in the E & C, unlike the crappy ones that are currently in the W164.

The door handles have those indented touch sensor "lock buttons" like the S instead of those cheap black rubber buttons that would come off after a while. Wish the doors had that MB tank thud when closing the doors. Love the large sunroof (like our X5), but this one didn't have it. Love the front (and back) bumper with that chrome skid plate, and the standard grille isn't as cheap looking as the one we had on our 164 (which I couldn't stand and promptly replaced).

Again, rear legroom hasn't improved. I'm 5'-9" (175cm) and to me it's still the same uncomfortable place to be just like our W164, the X5 still definitely has better legroom back there. After noticing the huge difference between the 163 and 164 in ride quality, there's definitely a huge difference between 164 and 166 quality wise.

You will love your 166, I can't wait to replace ours.

Yaz, are you saying that the W166 or W164 lacks the tank-thud? I'm sure the W164 obviously does, as all Benzes from that era seemed to have terrible sounding doors, but the new ones have it back very well, so I'd be surprised if the new ML lacks it.

Both actually. I was hoping they'd address it with the 166, but nah - still the same.

Very disappointed to hear about rear leg room. That means the GLK and ML are the worst in their respective segments. What the hell Mercedes? Take your head out of your butt. Now we're 6 years away from an improvement. Unacceptable.
When the E-class was redesigned it had a noticable improvement. It's an objection you don't have to deal with, which is great for a salesperson. It's a a roadblock. If a family car doesn't fit a family, then they eliminate and move on, regardless of how nice the other stuff is done.

Its its such a problem I wonder why they don't address it? What the actual measurements for the ML's rear leg room vs the competition?

M

Really!
2011 M-Class had 40 in. rear legroom, 2011 BMW X5 has only 36.6 in. and 2011 Audi Q7 has 37.1 in.
Furthermore, 2011 Acura MDX has 38.7 in, 2011 Lexus RX has 37.1 in.
Interestingly enough, the 2011 VW Touareg has 56.7 in. of legroom, this is much more than any other car in its class.
Am I missing something here? These specs were all taken from MotorTrend.

I think in the other cars the rear bench travels back and forth?

The X5 and Q both have 3rd row, and yes when the seat is positioned to accomodate the 3rd row, there is less room. You are welcome to sit in a Q and X5 with the seat to its farthest position and you will see that there is no comparison in knee room.

VW is making a push for leg room in all its models. And it seems to be working wonders here in the US. Just had a friend with two kids buy a Jetta, which never would have happened in the previous model.
