FF [2011-2016] [Official] 2011 Ferrari FF

The Ferrari FF is a grand touring car produced from 2011 to 2016. The successor to the 612 Scaglietti, the FF (whose name is an acronym for "Ferrari Four") is a three-door shooting brake. Development of the FF began in 2007, and it debuted at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2011; production started in the same month in Maranello, Italy. The FF shares parts, mainly the engine, with the F12berlinetta, which was introduced one year after the FF.

But the big news remains the all-wheel drive. Ferrari's ‘4RM' system is 50 per cent lighter than a conventional setup, mated to a beefed-up seven-speed dual-shift transmission already used in the California and 458 Italia.

And, interestingly, that seven-speed DCT ‘box has to contend with the might of a re-worked version of Ferrari's rather glorious 6.0-litre V12. Now a 6.2, this reworked Vee sits just behind the front axle and produces 660bhp and 504lb ft of torque. You might be interested to know that in the Four, this 6.2-litre returns 18mpg and emits 360g/km of CO2.

But you'll definitely be more interested in learning that the Four can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and top 208mph; fast enough to destroy any lingering doubt you still have over that controversial shape.

Ferrari has unveiled its first-ever production four-wheel-drive model, a front-engined V12 four-seater GT that not only replaces the 612 two-plus-two coupe but also aims to attract a new kind of “all-roads, all-weathers” Ferrari customer.

The new car, dubbed FF for its four seats and four-wheel-drive, is designed by Pininfarina under the direction of Ferrari’s own chief designer, Flavio Manzoni.

The first Ferrari of modern times to accommodate four full-sized adults and their luggage, it will be unveiled at next month’s Geneva show, and go on sale soon afterwards.

Ferrari hopes it will appeal in particular to buyers who usually use all-wheel-drive saloons or SUVs for winter driving and especially ski trips at this time of the year.

The revolutionary Ferrari has an all-new, longer wheelbase chassis with a new-design, all-independent suspension that incorporates the latest-generation magnetically adjustable dampers and standard Brembo carbon ceramic disc brakes.

The four-wheel-drive system, claimed to be around 50 per cent lighter than comparable applications, preserves the desirable rear weight bias of recent V12 Ferraris. Called 4RM (for ‘Ruote Motrici’) the system is unique to Ferrari, using the car’s electronic systems seamlessly to direct torque to the front wheels when slippery conditions demand it, but mostly leaving the car in its desirable (and understeer-free) rear-wheel-drive state.

Though the FF is more versatile than traditional Ferraris, Maranello counters any suggestions that it is “soft” by giving it a newly developed 6.25-litre V12 with just under 10 per cent more swept volume and 22 per cent more power than the 612, and a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox to replace the previous six-speed manual.

The FF also gets the package of efficiency-building measures introduced in the California, including stop-start and smart charging to improve economy by about 10 per cent. The FF engine produces 650bhp at 8000rpm and 504lb ft of torque (up 16 per cent) at 5000rpm. Despite these higher outputs, CO2 output is dramatically slashed from 470 to 360g/km (23 per cent) while combined fuel consumption improves from a distinctly average 13.8mpg to 18.3mpg. The FF’s 0-62mph acceleration time of 3.7sec also undercuts the 612’s by 0.4 sec, while its 208mph top speed beats the 612 by about 10mph.

Ferrari claims an impressive kerb weight of 1795kg for the FF, undercutting the 612 by 50kg despite the presence of the new on-demand 4x4 system.

This and the fact that the FF is almost identical in length and width to the outgoing 612, (and only 30mm taller) suggests Ferrari has scored a considerable packaging coup, since the graceful lines allow full adult headroom in the rear, and the boot provides 450 litres of space with all passengers aboard, or 800 litres with the rear seats folded, figures which match many four-door models.

This thing is just Nuts! I just love Ferrari for the way they wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am launch a car. Just a few days after some completely uneventful spy pics and they hit us with this.

At first I was like whoa! The moment soon passed and now I love it. I get a huge de ja vue hit of Z3 M Coupe - not a bad thing - but most of all I'm left with the appreciation of the boldness of the thing. It's completely different from the fastback Panamera concept or Aston Rapide four dour coupe theme. Brilliant - a bold move that epitomises Ferrari's position on the leading edge of the industry.

4RM: I'm just dying to see the technical pics of this system.

I feel you on that. At first I was taken aback, but then I looked at it more carefully from a "usefulness" standpoint and it makes sense. It still has all the Ferrari DNA, but it's just a more sensible buy. Plus, I actually like the look of it a lot. It's different, but not in a retarded way that most manufacturers choose to "differentiate" themselves.

This is one brutal looking car, not what I expected after the 458. The over sized front grill, those wheel arches that goes well into the bonnet, the fat bonnet bulge and those angry looking headlights are very un-Ferrari. The side profile will take some time to get used to, I wonder how much more practical is it to have a shooting brake instead of a conventional coupe shape because it doesn't look like there is much additional luggage space. The rear end is fantastic, love those semi floating tail lights and diffuser.

Actually do Ferrari need to make this shooting brake? I am sure your average Ferrari customer has several cars to fulfill whatever need/desire they have.

Here is the promo video, the car sounds fantastic.

And the best thing is the engine and power..660hp in that shape is gonna be out of this world experience..love the mad Italians!:D

Utterly bonkers. I've said this before, but it's definitely worth repeating: Ferrari are just on a whole different playing field from every other car manufacturer at the moment.

Ever since the F559 GTB, Ferrari has gone to great lengths to make their cars more daily drivable, though sadly they aren't 100% daily drivable as they catch fire. But the California has a metal folding roof and some practical features. Porsche Panamera and Aston Marting Rapide sell in great volumes and this Ferrari is a substitute for a four door coupe. Something a bit more distinctive and unexpected.

:D Very true.

I always thought Ferrari should have kept Maserati and market it as sub Ferrari brand with added practicality, it was their original intension but somehow never planned out. If they still have Maserati, a new more coupe like Quattroporte will be just the car to battle against the Panamera and Rapide, and Ferrari can be free to build pure super sports cars.

btw when you say "Finally a fog light free bumper" I don't think the current range of Ferrari has front fog lights on the front bumper, but they still have the rear ones hanging around the diffuser area.

Yeah. The Fiat Group has been uncanny with the development of the Maserati line-up. Only one new model ever 5 years or so is appalling.

Whoever finds the Panny Turbo horrifyingly expensive or the Rapide overpriced till learn that this FF will be more than out of touch to none other than millionaires. The outgoing model, the unloved 612, is currently the most expensive Ferrari on market. It's even priced higher than the 599GTB and LP640. Manchester United football players are watering their mouths now. Fernando Alonso will be happy to replace his Renault Megane Coupe for another more powerful read 2+2 car.

I didnt think ferrari could make a car uglier than a 612. the 599 and 458 were steps in the right direction. this just isnt.

and with a DRY weight of over 3900 lbs, the curb weight of this car will be close to that of the Veyron's.
