On the other hand I think VW has a problem with its product development. I don't understand how a Golf or a Passat can command such a premium above its Japanese counterparts when the quality and finishing of their cars are on par or even worse off than the Japanese. It's probably due to high wages in Germany and inefficient economies of scale.
I think German cars probably have a higher cost of production than Japanese ones. German cars seem to be built tougher than Japanese ones as well. It's true that they are not always as reliable, though. It's weird because German cars used to be some of the most reliable around. They are trying. I know some of the marques have factories in Eastern Europe probably for this reason along with examples like MB building the M class in the USA which probably doesn't save as much on salaries/benefits as much as it does on transportation costs since most of them are sold here anyway. Haha, well you have to do your research then. I know that many people complained a lot about issues with the last ML which was made over here instead of in Germany (or at least the majority of them I believe). My last (and only) car was built in a plant in Hungary and sent away for engine installation (I think that's what they did), and it was great.
