There seems to be a perpetual misapprehension on here that to be a "competitor" means the comparison has to be close. It doesn't. A competitor is just a similar car fighting for a similar market.

Mercedes is going to come back full force come f/l time for the S-Class.
Totally agree, Mercedes actually have old powerplants in both current S63 and S65 AMG models that will be due for replacement soon. The 4.0ltr V8 will replace the 5.5 V8 and judging by some aftermarket tuned versions of the C63 coming out that engine can easily achieve over 600PS, I would reckon the next S63 will hit 650PS (478kw) and the S65 will probably achieve 700PS (515kw) with a modified version of the current V12 or if we lucky a totally new 6.0ltr V12 powerplant that could be based on double the size of the new I6 3.0ltr coming out in 2017. I also reckon both FL S63 and S65 will be AWD as standard.

Yes it is.

It is also close to a second slower. S65 competes with 750i performance wise. Very sad.

Here are some figures from C&D for the 750i xDrive AWD and the S65 AMG coupe RWD, the Mercedes blows the BMW away. Unfortunately they didnt test the S65 AMG saloon but don't think it will be hardly slower than the coupe.

@rurella since you are a Porsche owner, has you driven any other top sporty sedan to compare them with your Panny? As far as I know, you are the only one here that owns a Panny, so it would be cool to read how cars like the RS7, M6 GC, M5, E63... Compare to your daily drive.

Hi SKY.

Prior to the Panamera, I was an exclusive BMW customer over the last 25 years with 3 series sedans/coupes and 5 series sedans from the e39 on, which was my favorite BTW. I have driven recent A6/A7/A8, MB CLS and E class and owned an F10. I never considered the 7 series or S class.

I have the base Panamera 4 with NA V6, so it doesn't pin you back during hard acceleration but it's still fairly quick with PDK and in sport mode. I love the steering feel, air suspension and fit and finish of the car. It's a little different looking but it has grown on me. Compared with the 5, it seems a little bigger but drives lighter with a much better balance between sport and comfort. BMW's used to drive and feel much different years ago, more Porsche-like if you will. The A8 actually was pretty impressive too, but had very numb steering. Good fit and finish though and it drove smaller than its size. To me, the Panny threads the needle nicely, great suspension, steering feel, PDK is wonderful and it has enough utility for my needs. It comes at a substantial cost premium over mid-size german competitors, however in my view, it is in a different class and worth the money.

I am looking forward to the Panamera redesign and will probably be looking for more hp.

Best.

The S65 like the whole S range is in a class of its own. Market wise only the tesla is a threat. Sedans are dying in general.

Which one sounds better? IMO it is S65 :D
