Z Series Next generation BMW Z4 E89 - part II (first FEP pics incl. !!!)

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
I know Dinan makes great stuff, but I did not know that BMW endorse their tuning.

They havent really been too intolerant either. Dinan has been around forever! I'm sure a giant conglomerate like BMW could've had them rubbed out by now...;) Its almost as if they have an unspoken secret understanding.

Alpina are the only tuner that get to share input when a new model is being developed and are therefore able to access information from BMW.
Everyone else has to wait till launch.

Andy , Larry and Dirty Harry.

Given the very nature of BMW's dynamics it is only fair that we instigate further creativity into our launch campaigns ,be it visual effects of the digital age or indeed the latest in camera technology.
One item we have come very accustomed to is the computer controlled crane gyroscope camera that is attatched via a computer controlled crane mounted on a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Leaving the why use the competition? questions aside.
This latest technology is used especially in vehicle action scenes and indeed scenes from such blockbusters such as "The Dark Knight" , Transformers and its incoming sequel , Bourne films its use is in the evidence of the dynamic swooping vehicle action scenes.
The Good thing about this technology is the camera can go up ,down , across , through , over and get close to the surface of the road as possible. The end result is such dynamic swooping shots that really reflect the potential of what car is being filmed.
As the Z4 is a Roadster we can get shots from above , showing the driver shift stick and pedal pump and take corners with such magnetic precision.
All this is down to the car of course and the camera helps enhance that evidence.

How everything works Ep. 1

What we are here doing is the hardest part of shooting because all we are getting is elements. Everything comes together but not at the moment.
We can basically have four cameras on the car at any given time so we have four different types of footage to use. Everything is not as you see on the media film. You do get helicopter engines drowning out your engine and incase of Sydney noisy sea birds spoiled the ambience this also meant the car had to cleaned up more than once.

Did we or didnt we?

One of the crew thinks we may have been snooped yesterday , although the car was not in production mode (It was covered with a foil car cover)
Someone says that there was a case of hyper activity when the BMW badge on the car cover gave the game away that BMW are in town.
Have not had a proper look yet but nothing here so far.

Since when?

Ever since early-mid 2008.
They are dropping the factory warranty because Dinan offers a complete upgrade kit for the car with Dinan's own warranty. However, it makes sense in the case of BMW offering performance upgrades with factory warranty.

If only we can only be so fortunate. :D

Same here...'bout time another photo surfaced.
In the meantime, another photo of the (folding) roofline...it's a fairly recent one from the end of July that I meant to post earlier.

Again, it's one of the familiar prototypes with Munich plates still running the autobahns.
High quality camera...almost professional spy-shot...like, "let's grab the Canon and maybe a BMW skunkworks prototype will pass us by", kinda thang.;)

Good catch^^ The roof looks a lot rounder in that pic. The camou over the rear gas tank is very deceiving. I keep visualizing this car drawing a striking resemblance to the Mercedes SL. Do you think its going to be about the same size? :t-hands:

Yes to the Ferrari California...what a beautiful automobile!
Here's another of a skunk prototype mule (M-GZ 4581)....same car as above & recently posted on the Netherlands AutoWeek site.
I wish someone would get a shot of Scott's cars.:D

BMW 7 F01 lost most camouflage in first week in April (if I remember correct), official photos we have seen 3 months later , in first week in July. That means Z4 should lost most camouflage in less than one month :t-cheers: Does anyone know when that will happen?

I'd say there's at least two guys here who can tell you to the day-hour-minute.

BMW Z4 : Concept Gran Turismo.

Whilst we are not talking about a concept car here in the lignage of the Concept CS. The new BMW Z4 will be one of many cars that will feature as a download for the upcoming Gran Turismo 5. BMW understands the potential of such cars with young enthusiasts that share the passion of the BMW brand and the first step taken in this criteria was the marketing dept working with the creators on introducing two as yet unseen models as shown in the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW Concept 1er Tii.
This will now include the upcoming BMW Z4 as this has equally huge potential for BMW especially in brand recognition and creativity.
Whereas the new Z4 will not be available as such just now , the new E89 hopes to follow the Spring 09 release of the car.

Enthusiast games such as Gran Turismo series have a great impact on a manufacturers product line. And a huge Project like Gran Turismo is something BMW are very happy to be associated with.

Location,Location,Location

Why go here? Why go there? Why not stay at home?
effectively we produce sporting dynamic cars and to enhance what BMW is in essence all about the worlds best driving roads are not just outside your front door. The end result is only about 3 minutes long but shooting in this case of the Z4 is just under 50 days - and that is location only.
There are many great driving roads across the world and certainly a few with great scenery that works in well with the product you are promoting.
New Zealand , and Adeilade and Sydney Australia have proved perfect backdrops for BMW with the perfect illustration to demonstrate our dynamic products.
This weekend we pack up and head for Cape Town South Africa - otherwise known as the mecca for automobile publicity shoots.
Nearly every BMW product in our line up today bar a few models have been filmed and photographed here , again its down to the scenery and and vibrant backdrops of architecture and of course the roads.
I would give very good odds that we could possibly be caught here by eagle-eyed members of the public , They know we are coming and know where we go. Sometimes we can just sneak in and sneak back out but some shots of the Z4 leave open the door that someone will see us
But this time we have some sneaky ideas of ourselves we are going to implement . Think decoy.

Use the Ruler.
The media has published what seems to be of a finished E-Klasse model.
Knowing only two well this model gets a years start over the upcoming F10 like the W211 had over the E60, what do I say without commenting in the main E-Klasse forum? Well the only thing I will say is that when the F10 appears you will know immediately who has won the beauty contest.
And you know it's true.

Wow, what a prescient post this is from Scott. We see into the future.
Lots of info....I want to tackle one aspect Scott mentions- advance photos of the car.
On the one hand his post seems to be a heads-up to the possibility of a spy-shot next week from the South Africa shoot.
On the other, he hints that a decoy is being deliberately dangled out there as a foil.

My own impression, believing that BMW is in fact controlling the whole thing-
& remember among Susanne Klatten's accomplishments is an advanced degree in business marketing and working for the Young & Rubicam advertising agency in Frankfurt-
we'll get both... perhaps a (deliberately) blurry pic of the real thing and some good shots of the decoy.

This is marketing <call it pre-marketing or guerilla marketing; whatever> from some very smart people....and to me,
a much more exciting moment than when the car finally appears in print perfectly posed against sun and sand in its official introductory color.

To what ends? I've thought a couple times that all of this...the hype, the leaked photos, the whole insider thing really only affects a very few people who are core fanatics.
And yet there must be some evidence that doing a slow strip-tease on the internet pays tangible and/or intangible dividends.
For whatever reason, I love it.

Maybe you're right Brookside, or maybe it's just a mouse and cat game: I mean maybe it wouldn't bother BMW to have spyshots of the car to create the buzz then they give some indications to make the job easier but they don't organize it themselves...

But either way, I'm ok to believe anything to see the car ! Now maybe they will cancel these spyshots to show it's not completely organized... ;):)

But I say if we don't see clearly spysots in the next few days, THAT would mean they canceled it on purpose to proove they're note organizing everything so THAT will be a proof they are !!! :D:D:D

So I'm waiting for the spyshots... :D

I doubt BMW would cancel anything on account of ''Brookside'' or anybody on any forum for that matter. I would agree with him though. It is very exciting times!

120CSi and 135iM :eusa_thin <--nvmd. You must be talking past tense in regards to the GT5 addition of 2 coupes.

The debut of the new Z4 is basically following the script more-or-less pioneered by the 1-er in regards to the internet.
Somewhat different audience (eg: Banana Republic rather than UrbanOutfitters) but the same strategy.
What is very different is that Scott pretty much gave us notice that new pics are due next week which didn't happen with the 1-er.
Photos seemed to pop up everywhere back then from all over the place. They still do, but it feels more orchestrated this time. And the debut of the new colors here is extremely secretive whereas the 1er was seen in Sedona Red right from the get-go.

Anyway, Scott seems to be guaranteeing delivery of something next week or he wouldn't bother mentioning it.
Clever.
& don't be surprised if, when they come, it isn't from Scott but from some other source.

Trust. :)

It was after we featured the BMW M5 Concept in Gran Turismo IV that the potential really heat up for this type of youthfull approach.
Driving Games are possibly the most popular in interactive entertainment and we know how very much people in this industry are very much car enthusiasts.

It was in the early approach when the creators approached BMW to see if they would like to become part of the global Gran Turismo phenonomen as GT V was about to begin production.

Very much so we offered the yet unseen Z4 Coupe and the 3er Coupe and also said we will show you something that we think would be ideal.
Those cars were the new M3 and the unheard of 135i, This was back in 2005.

Perfection for every detail.

When each car is filmed or photographed it is crucial that everything is perfect the body work shinning , wiped clean of dust and sand and that each panel effectively reflects the light. A mobile cleaning crew join us and take care of all of this but occasionally I do like to get my hands dirty, Filming takes in every angle of the car and for that we do not like to see especially in High Definition with road tar and grime spots especially on a lighter colored car a prime example would be the M3 in Dubai and all that sand . Everything is cleaned and shined to principle even the wheels are thouroughly shined and removed of brake dust and dirt.

Even the hardest jobs such as cleaning the panel lines of dust and dirt are adhered to and Cotton swabs are used to get in between the BMW model insignia. So when you see the sunlight sparkle across the polished insignias of the new Z4 in one segment of the film, rest assured that badge and it's background bootlid paintwork are completely free of dirt and dust.

Shark meets Shark

In design terms the current E83 Z4 has simularities with a shark from the toothy grille in which the bars are delibrately sloped to indicate teeth, To the Side slash which could be a substitute for the gills. And how the windscreen is the outer slant of the dorsal fin.
As the new BMW Z4 Roadster returns with an evolutionary approach of todays still cutting edge roadster it is appropriate we return to one of the more fascinating ideas of extreme sportiness.
As we have a couple of days available before filming commences I will take a day trip out and take in an afternoon cage diving amongst the great white sharks , Although some may find the idea very apprehensive it is a very awe inspiring sight and something great to behold. It is always something to inspire your creativity I dont get my ideas just by sitting on the toilet seat but I have had a few in which some cars today people are actually driving , Nice that.

Scoop : Top Secret!

Would love to do this for real! http://www.germancarforum.com/bmw-videos/21821-m3-cabrio-shoot-cape-town-south-africa.html
Instead just ask " What the **** you want?"
I would like to think they would be stunned to take a photograph when we have called their bluff.
Just to make it clear there is not going to be any "official" leaks. More so the reason why we will be filming in very public areas so there is more chance of being seen by the public.
But then again some shots will not even require the car.
