Not so sure about that, the examples you've given are just for those respective classes. The overall picture shows that BMW, Audi and Mercedes are indeed in the middle of a pissing contest when it comes to hp. BMW just doesn't look to go bashing the others over the head with larger than life power increases like Mercedes usually does. I think GTA7.5's post is right on the money. This has been going on for year. Just think the M5 started out with a I6 and the M3 with an I4, now they both have a V10 and a V8 respectively. Tech advances will likely keep MB/BMW/Audi from having to switch to V12s for their mid-level cars for now, but the pattern is there. God only knows where Mercedes will go with the AMG V8 if and when they turbocharge it!

Exactly! btw I did a little research with Audi.. back in 1991 the Audi RS6 didn`t exist. In fact I don`t believe their were any RS models of that time.
The A6 of today was known as the Audi 200 back in 1991. This car didn`t even have a 3.0liter 300hp inline-6 like the M5. It had a 2.3liter turbo charged inline 5-cylinder good for 162hp and 217lb-ft. This Audi 200 was more of a Volvo 940 Turbo compeditor which had the same power rating and engine size. Audi has indeed come a long way.

lOl BMW_Dude, this hp war has been going on for sometime now and I don`t believe it`s going to stop any time soon. BMW has been producing the M5 for more than 20 years. Mercedes gets tired of it and wants to play the game.
So thay produce a 326hp V8 W124 E500 in 1991 out powering the 317hp in-line 6 from the M5 of that time. MB drops the short lived E500.Then MB introduces the W210 E, here comes the n/a 355hp V8 E55 AMG. BMW comes on the scene and says "we`re not going to sit back and let Mercedes take our success" So BMW decides to introduce a 400hp V8 powered M5. (The M5 never had a V8 before! thay`ve always used inline 6 cylinder engines in the past.) Then comes Audi with a 450hp twin-turbo V8 "you guys thought you were fast, kiss my a$$!!(The RS6 never used a V8 in the past either) Mercedes says
Thay decide to produce a Kompressor V8 good for 476hp! leap frogging both the RS6 and M5. Well BMW decides to take action against both Audi and Mercedes with the currant generation M5.
Thay produce a hi-rev 507hp V10! out-powering the competition. Not only in hp, M also wants to teach the competition some lessons on the track.
Mercedes sees this action and makes improvements with the f/l (now) E63
which adds a better engine than the Kompressor V8 and has more hp (514hp)
than the 507hp in the M5. Now it`s Audi`s turn again. I believe Audi will leap frog the competition and surprise us..
Yes my friend. the power race continues.![]()
Not sure if this has anything to do with the rather nice chat between GTA7.5 and MikeJ.
Audi's first V8 powered car was the V8 Quattro built from 1988 to 1994.
Basically it was a 100/200 C3 with a longer-wheelbase, different grille design, flared wheel-arches and bigger wheels. Initially, the engine was a 3.6 V8 32-Valve built by welding together two Golf GTI Mk2 1.8 16V engines.
Later in 1991, the Audi introduced a LWB version of the V8 Quattro and the option of the 4.2 V8 32-Valve.
A very good narrative, but I think all of that seems to be changing if we look at the M3 engine(S65B40O1)specifications in comparison to the field (RS4,C63 AMG).
In terms of raw engine numbers, the M3 seems to be the weakest of the bunch. Could they have gone with a 4.2 litre V8 to play the numbers game- of course they could have but they chose to focus on the total package.
There is an underlying philosophical reason, and it seems to me that the V10 might be all that we get with the M5 for a long time to come. We may see a 10% increase in displacement, but emphasis will be focused on the chassis management, weight optmisation and all the goodies, hence the new maxim:efficient dynamics.
Thats interesting, thanks for sharing. I remember the Quattro back in 1988.
If Im not mistaken I believe this Quattro was top of the line for Audi.
The Quattro of 1988 could be the A8 today .
same info ive been hearing for 6 months. I know someone here in Sweden asking Audi people when they were sponsoring ski-VM in sweden about this new engine, they told him 580hp,So, about 580 hp. How reliable is this info?
Who says the hp contest is over? Look for the next AMG E-Class to have 600hp if this is true.
M
Yupp yupp. AMG will more then likely be supercharging the 6.3 engine. Don't know how Porsche will handle this. They might come up with a brutal Panamera GT2 housing a 605hp CGT V10.
Hope the RS6 won't be too expensive though and with that much power it is bound to guzzle gas like a private jet.
