New Audi A9 coming?

I have a hunch that we may be in store for something quite spectacular.

And yet, I am inclined to bridle my enthusiasm. I recall my disappointment when VAG product planners decided not to evolve the stunning 2003 Audi Nuvolari Concept into a production vehicle. A disappointment similar to that of BMW not bringing the 2007 CS Concept into production.

Oh well...at least we can expect the A9 Concepts' appearance (with slight modifications) from the grill to the B-pillar to be echoed on the upcoming D5 A8/S8-according to several German automotive press sources.

Looking at that front end, it doesn't' seem like Audi has move its design language forward, it is more of the same with the obligatory exaggerated features for concept cars.

With regard to the single-frame grill and headlamps, indeed evolutionary.

I am a little disappointed Audi doesn't bring out a 3D affect grill it would make the front end so much more distinctive. The headlights are a slimmer version of current Audi lights, it looks like their lights are becoming thinner and thinner in contrast to Mercedes headlights

It looks to me production car already, how much the A9 going to change, when it hits to production, not much. Lets see soon when the Audi reveal a whole car, but I see now the new design language in the front, IMO.

This car looks fantastic already. The only thing I don´t like too much are the rims.

Front looks very good, perhaps the best front I've seen from Audi. Nice and clean. It's just that I hate the A7 shape, I hope they don't make this a fastback (or whatever it's called) as well.

Agreed.

Even though I'm perplexed as to why Audi is up stepping the beautiful A8, I would hope the A9 will be a proper sedan, sans fastback.

This is just a chop-up of the 2009 sportback concept, isn't it?

The crucial point imo is whether the indeed better proportions of the teased A9 concept will really be translated into series production. If yes, this will be a turning point for Audi's design potential. However, in the past, Audi concepts often had better proportions than the latter product (probably because technical restrictions for concept cars are about none).

Quite true, that...

The 2009 A7 Sportback Concept was a bit more compelling than the later production model. And a prime example of how a mere 10-20 millimeters can influence the appearance of an automobile. The slightly heightened, convex rear window leaves the production model looking a bit hunchbacked from some angles.

The concept was fantastic. Both front and back were sharper, the slope from roof to trunk was coherent. The interior showed a great color code and details that (despite huge overall resemblance) did not make into the A7. You mentioned the window shape already.

If only they could put some of this concept finesse in the upcoming car.

I wish that with nearly every manufacturer Raby. It annoys me that we see such exciting concepts from Citroën, Cadillac, Toyota, Nissan, and others .....and then the production cars are so unremarkable.

Todays' issue of Autobild (Heft 46) features a rendering of the A9 on page 12.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
