Rolls Royce was never a dead brand :)
Rolls-Royce wasn't dead per se, but for most car enthusiasts, it stirred about as much passion and interest as the Tori Spelling bathing suit section of a desktop image gallery website.

Interesting info indeed, but lets get back to the Maybach

I edited Rob, didn't want to create a stir. I still have these bugs swarming me.
Sure ........but you shouldn't worry too much about that. I've known you long enough to know you can deal with "bugs"

you're right though, this thread is starting to stray a little of topic.

....where's the damn press release!

That's correct Hannaz, the 57 was usually a sports coupé.

Bugatti were not traditionally competitors with Rolls-Royce .......but there certainly was a big rivalry with Bentley.

Ettore Bugatti was very competitive with W.0. Bentley.

The Type 41 (also known as Royale) was a major commercial failure for Bugatti .....in a way that makes Daimler's recent experiences with Maybach look exceedingly positive.

In fact, if we're talking limousines, the USA had several outstanding Rolls-Royce rivals ........and Rolls-Royce even had a factory in the USA before WW2.

The Type 41 as a car was a failure, why Ettore thought he could sell a car like this in the middle of the great depression I don't know, but it's engine was not, Bugatti sold them to SCNF for use in railcars.

The great depression also caused the RR Springfield closure after operating for 10 years.

I just found a kit that turns your regular S-Class into a Maybach. For only 18 bucks !

^ That sounds way too expensive. Have you seen my Mercedes Maybuch ?

Just having a laugh ! I think the extra length looks good, but not really sure why the interior changes couldn't just be available under the designo brand or even just a discrete badge inside on the leather. Between this and the S 600, the only real difference I see is the extra quilting on the center console ? They already offer the S in different lengths, not sure why this particular length should get it's own name.

You know what, I just realized the English pronounciation of "Maybach" sounds like "my bug". Hehe.

btt: I think we shouldn't judge before the final release of official information. Little changes on bumpers, headlights, rims, etc. can change the whole impression of a car. I just can't imagine Daimler introduces a new sub-brand and then changes almost nothing to the base car. I'm also fairly certain there will be more cars wearing the Maybach badge on the trunk than the X222 (I'm thinking of a GL LWB or a luxury convertible). Time will tell...

^yeah, I know you were just having some fun.

I agree with your comments ........I think we all know this whole Maybach naming is purely marketting. I expect we'll soon see something similar from Bentley.

Bentley doesn't need to do anything silly like this, the Mulsanne has this covered and the flying spur competes with the top end s class models.

I see your point Rob but I was thinking about a model like the old Arnage Limousine

Daimler to revive Maybach with 3 sedans but no SUV

SINDELFINGEN, Germany -- Daimler plans three variants of its ultraluxury Maybach version of the flagship S-class sedan, including one aimed at Chinese buyers. But the company has ruled out a Maybach SUV for now.

Daimler will unveil the Mercedes-Maybach S600 this week at the Los Angeles and Guangzhou auto shows. The sedan has a 6.0-liter V-12 twin-turbocharged gasoline engine producing 530 hp. It will be joined by the Mercedes-Maybach S550 with a V-8 and the Mercedes-Maybach S400 4MATIC with a 3.0-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. That version has been designed to appeal to Chinese buyers looking to avoid punitive taxes.

It's been reported that Mercedes is developing a Maybach SUV based on the GL. But Mercedes sales and marketing chief Ola Kaellenius said: "I don't want to categorically rule anything out, but at this stage we have no plans for it."

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
