S-Class Mercedes-Maybach S600 Previewed

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz, being positioned above the other Mercedes-Benz models.
Yes the facelifted CLS debuted the 3498cm3 V6 Bi-Turbo, it has also recently been added in the E400 to replace the 3.0 V6 turbo. I believe this is a turbo version of the previous NA 3498cm3 V6 used in the E350/S350 (W221) and has a slight fuel economy advantage over the previous 3.0 turbo V6 (turbo version of E300 V6). It produces same power and torque as previous 3.0 but at lower revs.

Yes. Mercedes-Benz makes two different V6 Biturbos, with 3.0 and 3.5 liters of displacement. They use different gasoline direct injection combustion systems. The 3.0 liter comes with homogeneous injection, which is suitable for China and the USA for example, whereas the 3.5 liter version uses "Schichtladung" or stratified combustion. The latter is somewhat more efficient, but confined to Europe, maybe also Japan and Korea, and mainly used in the CLS and E-Class.

S400 4MATIC WILL START OFF THREE-MODEL RANGE WITH 333 HP ON TAP

Mercedes-Benz released details on the Mercedes-Maybach lineup ahead of the new model's debut the Los Angeles Auto Show next week. A new sub-brand in the vein of Mercedes-AMG, the S-class-based Mercedes-Maybach will be positioned above the short- and long-wheelbase S-class cars, but below the Pullman limousine.

Closely mirroring the Maybach 57 sedan, which was in production from 2002 through 2012, the Mercedes-Maybach will be available with three powertrain options worldwide when it goes on sale during the first half of 2015, according to Automotive News.

Mercedes-Benz is set to debut the Pullman version of the current S-class in early 2015, and the four-door, six-seat model will be developed and built by tuner Brabus. The new Pullman, based on the ...

The range-topping Mercedes-Maybach S600 will be powered by a 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbocharged gasoline engine producing 530 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque. Just below that will be the S500 version of the new sedan, which will use a twin-turbocharged V8 making 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The base model in the range will be a V6 version that will make use of the corporate 3.0-liter engine, rated at 333 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The S400 4Matic will reportedly be aimed at markets, such as China, with punitive taxes toward large-displacement cars. At least for now, it will be the sole all-wheel-drive model in the range.

Curiously enough, Mercedes-Benz made no mention of an AMG variant of the upcoming Mercedes-Maybach sedan at a conference attended by Automotive News, even though numerous camouflaged Mercedes-Maybachs have been seen and photographed wearing AMG bodykits.

Mercedes-Benz sales chief Ola Kallenius told Automotive News that pricing for the upcoming Mercedes-Maybach would be made known on Dec. 18, but that the range-topping S600 model will be priced below the previous Maybach sedans. Kallenius also indicated that sales are projected to be higher than those of the Maybachs of the 2000s, which peaked at a mere 600 units in 2003.

It is not known at this time whether all three models of the Mercedes-Maybach would be offered in North America, though next week's debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Guangzhou Auto Show in China will shed further light on the specifics of the new ultra-luxury sedans.

Looks just like what I expected but don't see any Maybach badges on the boot!

Thought the grills and wheels would at least be unique. It looks like the changes are confined to the stretch in wheelbase and the interior.

I think there will be people who prefer this over a Ghost. It's lower profile yet extremely luxurious and spacious.

And don't forget that it's also a lot more modern and with a lot more technology. And the reclining seats with footrest.

They could have just as well done all that by calling it S4/5/600 XL or whatever other alphabet soup, why f#ck up a historic marque?

Completely agree Arnoud, the extra space will make it very attractive for some buyers.

like I mentioned earlier, there is room for expansion at this end of the market. It's interesting that Rolls-Royce has already commented on it not being a competitor - did they even need to say that?

Rolls-Royces are great fun for special occasions but this extended S-class could genuinely be used everyday without drawing too much unwanted attention.

yeah, interesting that.

I wondered if it might be optional to have a Maybach badge and hood ornament.

I'm sure Jay-Z and Rick Ross will be requesting that for theirs!

btw: I really really like it!

Yes probably the badge is optional and I agree with you, it does look good and I do like it alot, that back seat must be mega comfortable and relaxing!

The price mentioned above by @Wolfgang is approx. 170,000Euros which I presume is even cheaper than the Rolls Ghost, so maybe its not a rival then.

It might not be a rival in the price department, but I'd say that it has more than enough to be a rival in the features and luxury department.

I think we need to stop thinking about these vehicles as "competitors" .....because they actually aren't really competing in the same way a 5 series competes with an E class or A6.

.......and besides, many buyers will likely own a Rolls-Royce or Bentley as well.

I wonder if it can be fitted with a divider?

"Driver roll up the partition please"

This is a bit sad. I was expecting an entire new design for the 600 Pullman. Instead, MB took the cheap route.

Something that it is starting to be the trend with this brand.

Mercedes Revives Maybach Name to Challenge Rolls-Royce

Mercedes-Benz is reviving the Maybach name for a second time to challenge Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the world’s wealthiest auto buyers.

Maybach, a 1930s-era marque, will become the ultra-luxury sub-brand of Mercedes, offering more spacious and opulent adaptations of cars like the S-Class sedan. The first vehicle in the rollout will debut later this month.

“The customer gets the best our house has to offer,” Ola Kaellenius, sales chief of the Daimler AG unit, said at an event today near Stuttgart, Germany. “I’m confident and optimistic that Maybach will be successful on the market.”

Mercedes is reversing a 2011 decision to end production of Maybach as part of a broader makeover of branding at Mercedes. Under a plan to rename its sport-utility vehicles, roadsters and coupes starting next year, the M-Class SUV becomes the GLE.

“They are cleaning up past mistakes that they allowed to produce chaos,” said Juergen Pieper, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Bankhaus Metzler. “It’s a good and logical move.”

With Mercedes seeking to leap from third to No. 1 in global luxury-car sales, the moves play catchup to rivals. BMW AG and Volkswagen AG are already active in the ultra-luxury segment with the Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands, respectively, while BMW and Volkswagen’s Audi also clearly distinguish SUVs from their mainline sedans and wagons [...]

Maybach, which was originally revived in 2002, will become the luxury equivalent of the AMG performance unit, which offers souped-up versions of cars including the A-Class hatchback. The first model will be the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which will be premiered in Los Angeles and Guangzhou, China.

Lavish Interiors

The sub-brand will be distinguished from standard editions by having more space, special seats, “lavishly designed” interiors and more customization options, Mercedes said.

As an independent brand, Maybach -- named after an early collaborator of Gottlieb Daimler, one of the automaker’s founders -- failed to mount a serious challenge for ultra-luxury buyers because it lacked global name recognition. Deliveries peaked at about 600 cars in 2003, while Rolls-Royce and Bentley have gone on to post sales records.

The new Maybach models will be cheaper than the previous vehicles, which were individually built and cost more than $350,000, Mercedes said, without providing specifics. The company expects China to be the most important market, followed by the U.S., Germany, Russia and the Middle East.

“It’s a much better fit to reactivate Maybach as a sub-brand of the S-Class than to try to artificially build up a brand history,” said Daniel Schwarz, an analyst with Commerzbank in Frankfurt. “The S-Class is already a strong brand and can be leveraged even further.”

I wonder if the new "maybach" can be customized by mercedes like a rolls royce can (and I don't mean just different colored leather), and if not, then I wonder how will the brabus tuned version look.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
