Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

I agree with you.

It’s all about China.
They even used a Chinese woman for the press release pictures.

Chinese want Panorama roofs you can’t open, Chinese want a fridge with disinfection, Chinese want 1.5L engines, Chinese want Karaoke on the car, Chinese want a lot of leg room,Chinese despise convertibles Chinese are getting everything they want.

The US or European market doesn’t matter anymore, we have to like and buy what the Chinese want.

If I want to buy a car, which has been developed for the European taste, I need to buy a Dacia. For the US Taste there’s the RAM 1500 or the Mustang or the Escalade, to name only a few.
And see this is where really adept management comes in strikes the right balance for different markets. A roof that opened over the rear passengers would be fire. We know Mercedes has the engineering know how to do it. It comes down to cost. Easier to offer more of the same things in all markets a than extreme tailoring in a few markets but I would say it’s worth it when you’re talking about China, USA and Europe. Some unique features in each market certainly won’t hurt.

My father's E34 had that 35 years ago. It's not like it's a thing which is hard to overcome engineering wise, it's just that they simply can't be bothered anymore these days.

They rather sprinkle the car with LEDs

I get your point but I meant in a van.

What a day, still trying catch up on all the videos from the main presenters. That said, what is next the GLE and GLS I believe? Can't wait.

Please don’t let them ruin the GLE - it’s the last car that remind me of a Mercedes-Benz

I'm nervous, but we'll see. The first facelift sharpened up the GLE (and GLS) very nicely. Now they could try to graft on a look that the GLE and GLS were not originally designed for, since they have to last 2-3 more years. It's a very tricky and difficult thing to pull off.

The demand for the electric Mercedes models CLA and GLC is currently so high that customers who place orders face waiting times of up to six months. Mercedes sales director Mathias Geisen told auto motor und sport that demand had increased significantly even before the German government introduced purchasing incentives: "In the fourth quarter of last year, we were already at a significantly higher level than the previous quarter; growth in battery-electric vehicles was 18 percent."

Demand for the CLA and GLC models is currently very high. "Order intake for the CLA is particularly encouraging," says Geisen. "The GLC isn't even in showrooms yet, but it's also in very high demand. Because of this intense interest, deliveries have been postponed until the second half of the year. We are already working to increase production capacity wherever possible."

If the C class EQ looks about 95% like the car in this video then it could be a looker and be getting some good sales numbers for Mercedes

That looks good, the interior is obviously wrong, we know it will be more like the GLC.

But it's sad to see the Germans are seemingly unable to quickly deviate from a chosen path when they full well know the chosen path has proven to be the wrong one. It's simply taking too long for them to make a U turn and find the right path. The EQ design language is a globally disliked theme, and yet their whole lineup is turning into it. Something simply doesn't add up.
Exactly what I was describing, and why the Chinese iterate better. I dont agree with Matski that they have no solid brand identity to uphold and it gives them a runway, but regarding the Germans its exactly as you wrote it - there is clear evidence they made a huge mistake, why not just fix it, why delay for years and years? Thats why it bothers me that they still kept their design direction to make the S and GLS more EQ, instead of making the ugly EQs more Mercedes.

Ironically the most chinese owned european brand - Volvo - stays the most european in design.

What you are saying makes his point. The Germans aren’t able to pivot like that across multiple models like that. It takes time and designs are frozen years ahead of time. What Chinese brand has any brand equity inside of China? What do they even stand for? For a company like Mercedes it’s a cultural shift and that is never easy and to be clear it’s their own problem. The EQ cars are dead. No need to change them. They aren’t exactly turning the other cars into EQs either. The black plastic around the grille was the least of the EQ design’s problems.

Volvo stays the most European in design when you can’t find much Volvo DNA in any of their designs? They all look like anybrandchinese.com.

I'd agree that Volvo/Polestar present what is generally perceived as a "distinctively Scandanavian design".

IMHO, German manufacturers have often presented less enduring, less endearing exercises in automotive design. Of course, there are some very notable exceptions to that rule. The Porsche 911, the BMW 1600/2 (with a wee bit of purely fundamental assistence from Italy's Michelotti) the C219 M-B CLS and R129 SL and the first gen Audi A7 are obvious examples. In fact, in the 1950's/60's/early 1970's, much of German manufacturer design was heavily "Detroit influenced". Stellar examples of "European design" have their genuine origins elsewhere, although they too are quite tied to nationalities rather than the continent as a whole.
