Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

Does Geely still own 9,69% of Mercedes?
Actually the CEO Li Shifu does own the e9.69% through another company Tenaciou3 Prospect Investment Limited.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG has a diverse group of shareholders. Here are some of the major shareholders:

  1. Beijing State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration: Holds 9.98% of the company's voting rights.
  2. Li Shufu: The Chinese investor holds 9.69% through Tenaciou3 Prospect Investment Limited.
  3. Mercedes-Benz Group AG: Owns 7.26% of its own shares.
  4. Kuwait Investment Authority: Holds 5.57%.
  5. Amundi Asset Management SA: Owns 0.26%.
  6. State Street Global Advisors Ltd.: Holds 0.15%.
  7. Sjunde AP-fonden: Owns 0.11%.
  8. OFI Invest Asset Management SA: Holds 0.10%.
  9. Storebrand Asset Management AS: Owns 0.06%.
  10. Oddo BHF Asset Management GmbH: Holds 0.06%.
These figures represent a snapshot as of September 30, 2024. The rest of the shares are held by various other institutional and individual investors

The two top major shareholders, owning almost one fifth of the shares, are Chinese! I didn’t know that.

Ironic.... Having 20% of the company , with ( IMO ) asian design influence in the latest designs , but failing so hard in 2024 , in the mainland.

Let's not forget about the red Maybachs launch events in China (red...)

MB needs to get it's root DNA back , design language , and quality wise.

Thank you @Rolf for clearing that up. Forgive my language, but I'm wondering if the feces that hit the fan for Geely (and Baidu) are gonna splatter over Mercedes and Volvo for that matter as well.

Jiyue – high speed car crash of a brand owned by Geely and Baidu

Jiyue has disbanded on the spot days after rumors of the company being in trouble first started circulating. On paper with the company being a joint venture between Geely and Baidu, both huge companies, it is one brand that shouldn’t fail. The shockwave going into 2025 will be if Jiyue can fail, who will be next?

Originally known as Jidu Auto, the company started life as a joint venture between Baidu with a 55% share and Geely 45%. Largely due to the company’s inability to get relevant production licenses for the car, the company restructured into Jiyue Auto, where the majority of ownership (65%) came under Geely and 35% under Baidu.

The first product, the Jiyue 01, went on sale in 2023. An SUV, it never sold well, and the company’s second model 07, a sedan, launched in September this year. This helped lift sales, which had previously been in the hundreds to the low thousands per month. However, cumulative sales for this year up to the end of November have only been 13,834 units.

By December 10, rumors on Weibo said Jiyue was about to disband. Employees believed that it would just be a layoff, and they were informed that the company would hold a meeting the next day.

Jiyue CEO Xia Yiping said at the meeting on the afternoon of December 11 in the form of a video address “Jiyue is encountering difficulties, and it is necessary to reduce the merger of duplicate departments, improve efficiency, and cut projects that cannot make money in the short term.”

By December 12, the company was disbanded on the spot, and Xia was besieged by angry employees discussing the law after he admitted that the N + 1 compensation for the resignation plan is uncertain and that the social security payments cannot be paid. Employees responded by carrying off the company’s office equipment.

Already, there are rumors of financial impropriety. Jiyue’s CFO, Liu Jining, is missing together with the company’s books. It seems that his family is also missing with him, and based on electronic communications, his IP address has been traced to Singapore.

Caixin reports that Baidu sent a financial team to investigate Jiyue in October 2024 for due diligence before it invested a further three billion yuan (412 million USD). Reportedly they discovered a financial hole of up to seven billion yuan (962 million USD) that was unaccounted for and so chose not to invest.

There are also rumors surrounding the CEO, Xia Yiping, claiming that he significantly overpaid various suppliers.

The company’s headquarters are being besieged by supplies who have not been paid. These appear to be mainly in the area of media companies who were contracted for various social media exposure, rather than part suppliers.

Around 70% of the parts of Jiyue cars are purchased from Geely. In February of this year, it was reported that Jiyue owed nearly 1.5 billion yuan (206 million USD) to Geely for parts and OEM fees. Furthermore, according to one employee, Geely stopped producing cars for Jiyue in November.

In a surprising reappearance, Yang Yueqing, project engineering director of HiPhi made a video a few days ago essentially advising affected parties to run for the hills. A decidedly disheveled-looking Yang advised employees to leave as soon as possible. He claimed that the longer they wait, the more competition they will have in getting new positions.

Furthermore, Yang advised owners of Jiyue cars to sell them as quickly as possible. More advice came to car owners from Jiyue car blogger Jia Gong. He said that without network support, the intelligent driving system would only be able to do lane-keeping. He also suggested that car owners use the NFC and UWB key functions as soon as possible because if the network is cut in the future, the mobile phone Bluetooth app will not be able to unlock the vehicle and open the doors.

The big question going into 2025 is who will be next?

Quality should be Mercedes top priority. High quality cars are more reliable and consequently tend to hold their value well and increases customer loyalty. What's stops Mercedes from taking a Lexus LS apart to learn how to make cars that are reliable?

What Mercedes-Benz so desperately needs is a volume market product that is so compelling, so desirable that it is "allocated" rather than "simply sold". Mercedes-Benz needs to recapture those "W115 and W123 Moments".

With the aura of the W124, W126, C126, R129 and W140. Make Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Again.

Simple: There is still demand.

In an era where every media is bought , paid well by them , their image is still very good. Every review is good. Every post is good.

Even with a lower demand , it's still good for them...

What worries me the most about MB is the total lack of a new design theme to look forward to. At least BMW has been able to present new EVs looking good, fresh and recognisable as BMWs.

Based on the products available right now, why would anyone pay twice the price for an EQE 43 vs a Model 3 Performance?

If MB wants to keep asking for a premium price for its cars, they need to offer a premium product.

What makes you think they haven’t? Toyota and Lexus’ method to make cars reliable isn’t unknown in the auto industry. It comes with tradeoffs other companies like Mercedes just aren’t interested in. Mercedes clearly prioritizes other things that their customers care about, namely cutting edge technology.

A specific example is that Toyota engines while mechanically simpler, were nowhere near as efficient. Particularly in terms of power delivery. But even modern Turbo-charged Toyota engines are unproven in terms of long term reliability. We'll have to wait and see.

Simpler is always more reliable. But simpler isn't always better. Especially in the luxury market which values power, performance, smoothness, efficiency, comfort and flexibility over simplicity and reliability.

Simpler doesn't always equal to more reliable.

Simple car, but riddled with MANY faults. Such as the steering column collapsing on the driver's lap.

Fair enough, but I think the the first question that a Mercedes buyer makes is a simple one:

"Is it fast?"

However, given Mercedes arrogant marketing of "The Best or Nothing" they (Mercedes) should strive for better reliability. It's quite embarrassing to see a brand new S-class catching fire for unexplained reasons after just 15 days of ownership. Or worse: having a disgruntled customer smashing an S63 with golf clubs outside a Mercedes dealer after enduring numerous problems and lack of customer care.

Not to mention the $800k W211 E-class... Old news, but still embarrassing.

It's what happens when you try and save a few kwid.

Well, the Kwid was originally designed for India, which is an overpopulated country and the collapsing steering column works as a birth control system.

Renault call it the CNCD - Contrôle des Naissances Colonne de Direction

Here's another customer who won't be having any children anymore thanks to the Kwid's innovative collapsible steering column.

Though he could be a Mercedes owner whose overjealous girlfriend just caught him helping another hot chick at the gym... Right @LaArtist? Think about that scene from Sleeping with the Enemy only with roles reversed.

The narcissistic BPD girlfriend kicks the boyfriend in the nuts and punches his face whilst he's doubled over clutching his sore balls. Yeah... Male domestic violence is real, it happens, but it gets ignored.

Anyway, I'll check for more news about Geely and BAIC and find out if they're f#cking things up and if the shit that hits their fan will splatter all over Mercedes and the dear old Volvo.

It looks like Mercedes-Benz is on the same path as VW with cost cutting. It will be planning to fire 16600 staff (or 10% of the work force) in the next 2 years. Who is next BMW? Audi has also closed one factory and about 3000 staff are fired.

This is very bad news for the German auto industry. The legacy car makers are in serious trouble and probably we could see hundreds of thousand of job cuts in the next 2 to 3 years from all including GM, Ford, Stellantis, Japanese and Korean brands etc.

Electric Viking has an incredibly punchable face. Except of course, I'd ram my knee into his 🥚🥚, which sadly would be an useless effort as he clearly looks like the sort of man who had a vasectomy. Besides, he's a shill for Elon Musk. Anything God almighty Elon lies about, the Electric Viking will defecate through his mouth and post it on YouTube.

But, yeah, German auto industry is doomed and they only have themselves to blame. All those years of people telling them to build car as reliable as Lexus and yet they chose to invest in cute advertising and betting everything on (in?) China. Serves them right! Ficken deutschen Idioten! What the f#ck were they thinking by betting all the chips in a f#cking communist country and kissing the European Union's ass?!

MORONS!

No wonder they lost two World Wars and are not allowed to have Nuclear Weapons.

Even a puffy country like France has a nuclear arsenal.

Not to interrupt all the doom and gloom, but there is also widespread economic uncertainty in most major markets where people don't want to spend unnecessary money on things like cars. Notice how there aren't any car manufacturers who are having a good time right now. Nissan and Honda are contemplating a merger, Toyota is struggling. Stellantis is lol, and so on.

Kissing the EUs ass is basically irrelevant, because environmental objectives are necessary even if we don't like them.

And what did you expect with China? For the German's to ignore one of the biggest markets in the world?

Mercedes could make the best £80,000 car in the world, but there still would be reduced appetite to buy it.
