Well, Rob, I have no idea what could be hidden under the tape. Because from an aesthetic PoV, I don't see MB fitting a black thing on the upper part of the headlamp without any care for its integration. But this tape is intriguing me since we saw pics of the FL 221...

I saw two little holes in the upper corners of the central air intake. it could very well be used for the Pre-Scan couldn't it? Even if it seems small and realtively un-protected.

From what I understood, the laser beam has to move vertically on several cms so as to scan the road ahead of the front wheels, thus I don't see the lasers on the very top of the headlamps. But in the air intake, it could be too low to work, 'cause it couldn't scan properly the near area.

I think the Pre-Scan is maybe not ready for the FL.

Or maybe one of the Xenon-globe is for the Pre-Scan, not for Xenon, and thus there is a supplementary lamp in the top of the headlamp, which is hidden because we would see something is goin'on if there are too many lamps in the headlight cluster?:eusa_thin

After all, technicallywise, only one Xenon-globe is enough for both low and high-beam (it's a moving filter who comes in front of the Xenon-arc to tamper the light, thus making it low-beam) so this could be possible I think, to hide the Pre-Scan in a usual Xenon-type reflection-globe.

The second globe, halogen this one, is still here in the Mercs to be used as light-horn and standlight (the other carmakers use the main Xenon-unit for that, meaning a delay to activate the light-horn). This halogen-lamp could be the one hidden under the tape and replaced by the Pre-Scan.

Stays the Infrared-unit, who I believe will stay in the inner corner of the headlamp.

But in fact, I have no idea what is hidden under the tape... I can only guess...

^^^ That is high praise indeed.

hmm, well I must be in a very good mood ;)

You certainly have a good understanding of the tech involved in this Amaury. :usa7uh:

I thought maybe the tape was covering up a brow feature like the C and GLK share, which is really more of a styling cue.

An eyebrow couldn't fit in such a headlamp design. It has to make sense, usually by continuing in a characterline like in the C-Class where the eyebrow is the forthgoing of the grille-cutline to the side bonnet-cutline, and thus kinda the merging point of bonnet, grille and characterline.

Such an eyebrow would be out of place in the 221.

It is however true that BMW's eyebrow usually aren't at all integrated in the design of the car itself, detail that i don't like. But it would be very un-MBish to make it.

I only hope they put the AMG version the rear view mirrors like the FL CLS and future E-Class Coupe. But this looks stunning, with LEDs like the PS we saw a few pages before.

Damn thats looking guuuuuud

PS
Thats some wide ass rubber:)

I was waiting for your answer, I know that you like this things (how not :D). Mercedes is doing great with the S-Class facelift.

I hope the add buttons again to the dash and erase those boring compartiments under the climate controls.

DAMMMMMMMMMMM!

Simply amazing, I think i might just like this more than the S8:D

P.s glad they got rid of the fobs in the vents!

Chrome strips or no chrome strips?

You can't see any ridges where the chrome strips should be:confused:

I´ve seen on mototauthority some other pics of the non-AMG version where you can see something like a tiny chrome strip going across where the body strips where on the pre-FL version.

Like this one:

Don´t know exactly if this is some kind of stripe or not...

I can't see the ridges either but the chrome strips must be there otherwise the rear end will look bland and somewhat bloated. There need to be something there to break it up a bit.

on this picture it looks like they're using diferent led's to make some difference between S:

don't know how to explain hhh

^^
Perhaps that darker red border around the reverse light(white bars) will be LED turned on constantly like with Audi's LED tail light circus.

You can see an eyebrow ... :t-cheers:

PS: this car looks like a security (armored) version - look at the flag holder on the front wheel arches.
Yep EnI, there's definitely something goin' on in the upper part of the headlight. Looks like there is a whole structure above the two lenses.

Question is, what is that, a mere eyebrow? Wouldn't fit the design. It seems to have a strange, curvy shape. It surely stops where the blinker started in the pre-FL car (where the wheel arch merges with the headlamp), in an attempt to hide the curves of the headlamp. The LEDs at the bottom, the thing above, the two lenses, will give the impression that the headlamps are smaller, edgier than they are, without needing to change the shape of it.

But it would make this headlamp very busy. Two lenses, LEDs stripe, Night-View lamp, reflector structure at the corner, and this eyebrow above the lenses?

My guess is that it has a functionnal reason. And that reason could very well be the Pre-Scan sensors.
The question is: why hide it, it can't work through the tape? Well, maybe they're testing Pre-Scan in anonymous versions, whereas these ones only are here to test the rest of the FL...

Anyway, it's very strange, and quite exciting: this FL looks superb, and it could start a technological firework, even more than we already know...
