BMW to recall 11,700 cars after installing wrong engine software

BMW issued the statement after a report in news weekly Der Spiegel suggested it had installed software that manipulated emissions of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxide, something its management has always denied.

“In the course of internal tests, the BMW Group has discovered that a correctly developed software update was mistakenly assigned to certain unsuitable model-versions,” the company said in a statement.

In this connection from DW.com:
"Wegen des irrtümlichen Einsatzes der Software sollten nun 11.700 Fahrzeuge der Modelle "M550d xDrive" und "750d xDrive" zurückgerufen werden, erklärte BMW weiter."
"Dabei gelte die Sorge des Autobauers vor allem dem US-Markt, wo empfindliche Geldstrafen drohten."

Why would BMW be concerned for penalties on the US market since the effected models are not offered on this market??????

Because it is the standard of most journalism these days. Blame ahead of actual research.

It's a non-issue.

They accidentally (human error) installed the X5 / X6 M50d N57 engine software into 11,700 units of M550d & 750d, resulting in WORSE emissions (not better).

Yes, it's essentially the same engine but X5 / X6 M50d also feature AdBlue system along with NOx adsorber to meet EURO6 norm - therefore different engine software is used for X5 / X6 M50d compared to M550d / 750d.

The affected M550d & 750d models will get proper engine software via recall action, so they'll fully met all the emission standards. Engine performance won't be affected. Also no other BMW engines & models are affected.

You don't need to explain man, cheating for only 11.700 cars is beyond moronic.

It's not cheating with engine software here to get better emissions. It's the opposite: the wrong software that was accidentally installed causes WORSE emissions in M550d and 750d, not better.

But if it caused worse emission how did they pass the emission test?

Who said they were out of limits? They were just worse in some situations than they should be with a proper engine software. (y)

I don't have a details how the BMW have discovered the error. But somehow they did. It seems the emissions in M550d & 750d were not as good as promised by BMW due to wrong software.

Also, those are very niche models (M550d, 750d, X5/X6 M50d).

If this problem exists because of a mistake after the car has been signed off and gone into production, who'd be testing it regularly enough to spot the problem?
Regularly enough? We are speaking here for three years. It started in 2014 and the first cars should be on their third obligatory technical test.

The production dates for the recall were actually 2012, so I agree, it may have come to light that way, but as @EnI points out, it might not have been significant enough to show up - or at least show up enough for word to get back to BMW that there was an ongoing problem.

It's definitely a ****-up on BMW's and an embarrassing one... but mistakes happen.

No, the cars from 2012 to 2014 are ok, but after that BMW started to use the software of the X5 and X6 M50d in the 5er and the 7er.

Ah, I was going by this..

Affected are niche engines of the already expired model generation of the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series from the years of construction from 2012 to 2017 with the high-performance diesel engine N57B30S1 with three turbochargers. In detail, these are:

BMW M550d xDrive Sedan (production 03 / 2012-10 / 2016)
BMW M550d xDrive Touring (production 03 / 2012-02 / 2017)
BMW 750d xDrive (production 07 / 2012-06 / 2015)
BMW 750Ld xDrive (production 07 / 2012-06 / 2015)

I believe you man, I was just saying that implying they were cheating based on the first article is ridiculous.

Prosecutors raid BMW headquarters, suspecting 11,400 cases of fraud

Bavarian prosecutors have raided high-end carmaker BMW in a fraud probe relating to more than 11,000 vehicles they suspect were rigged to appear less polluting in regulators' tests.

"On suspicion of fraud in around 11,400 cases, prosecutors have opened an investigation against unidentified workers or managers at BMW and raided BMW headquarters in Munich and another site in Austria," the authorities said in a statement.

"There is an initial suspicion that BMW uses or has used a 'defeat device' that activates during testing" by regulators to determine emissions levels, prosecutors added.

A defeat device refers to a system like those built into more than 11 million cars worldwide by Volkswagen in the "dieselgate" scandal.

In the VW case, it operated exhaust treatment systems to remove harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) at full effectiveness when cars detected they were undergoing stationary tests, while shutting them off in on-road driving.

As for BMW, "evidence gathered in Munich and Austria must now be looked over, the investigation is only just getting started," the prosecutors said.

In a statement Tuesday, BMW confirmed the raids and repeated the company's stance that "a correctly programmed software subroutine was mistakenly allocated to incompatible models".

The software was not used for "deliberate manipulation of the exhaust treatment system," it insisted.

BMW in February admitted the software was present in some vehicles and said it would recall them for a software update as soon as one was approved by the KBA German vehicle licensing authority.

The programme was not built into the first cars of the two types affected -- the 750d and M550d -- to roll off assembly lines, rather only a smaller number beginning "well after the start of production" the group said.

BMW "is supporting the authorities fully in their work" and has also launched an internal investigation, the firm added.
