Maybach 57/62 (W240/V240) Maybach 62 S Unveiled

The Maybach 57 (W240) and 62 (V240) were the first automobile models of the Maybach brand since its revival by DaimlerChrysler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group AG). The concept car and production models were based on the Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class. Both models had an "S" (Spezial) option, and additional Landaulet version for the 62 S. Production: April 2002 – February 2013, 3,321 produced.
The interior of the Maybach 62S looks so much richer and nicer than the latest models. It is amazing that this car in 2003 has an opaque auto tint panoramic roof that is now been launched in new cars nowadays.

I wonder what makes Mercedes want to show it off now again. Why not make a long wheelbase G-Class maybach edition?
I'm just surprised lots of things are still working 😂
But why are things missing when it's in storage.

I also just noticed the wooden steering wheel and love it.

Keep in mind the old car was twice the price of the new one.

On top of that, Daimler lost an eye-watering amount between ~€ 330,000 (57/57s) and over ~€ 400,000+ (62/62s) — on each Maybach sold. With the way accountants run MB now instead of engineers, this type of car is extinct.

The car engineering/build quality stickler in me loved the Maybach, and I used to one of the folks wondering why someone would take a Phantom over it when the Maybach was better engineered and more comfortable. 20+ years later my opinion is the opposite.

Nowadays, the Maybachs can be a one-way ticket to bankruptcy trying to keep up with the full service schedule and the circa 25+ year old electronics, and the Airmatic DC suspension. Many of the MB dealers that were designated Maybach specialists for repairs no longer have the trained technicians nor the special tooling to repair them. IIRC, the 62 technically needed a special lift and hoists due to weight and length.

MB’s previous commitment to having a parts catalog for all classic models dating back to the 50’s completely went out the window during covid, so now some critical parts can no longer be sourced new - even on my R230, so it’s scary to see what the situation will be (or already is) with the 57/62.

On a similar note, the Bentley Mulsanne has become dangerously cheap, but it similarly costs a fortune in upkeep. It was the best looking of the bunch by far and the interior craftsmanship was beyond reproach. It’ll make someone look like a captain of industry for E450/540i money. I believe it still has most powerful factory audio system in vehicle by Naim at 2200w (the LS500 ML comes close).

Tyler just did a video on his 62.
At least the SBC braking system is still under warranty.

25 years/unlimited mileage just shows how needlessly complicated and failure prone the technology was, namely the hydraulic pump within the units. Before MB extended it, many MB’s of that era would be deemed mechanically totalled since the cost of SBC repair was sometimes double the value of the car.

Keeping the OG Maybach in pristine condition is serious flex in this day and age. In sum probably more expensive in service/maintenance totality than the W222 Maybach next to it.

It is indeed a flex. Maintaining an old OG Maybach especially in stop start traffic in Hong Kong. This was the second OG Maybach I saw within 5 days

I guess it’s fine to drive in traffic, no start/stop and other BS. The V12 can idle for hours, no problem.
The 5G automatic, starts in 2. gear.

I have a S600 with the non S drivetrain.

An unexpected spotting, the original and the newer version in the same garage.

A current design and version of this car needs to be built now the Maybach brand has grown and is now known and become a successful brand.

Now its time Mercedes make a Large sedan and SUV with a maybach exclusive size and design

A SUV the size between the GLE and GLS in Maybach form with exclusive detial will be a succes with a V8 and V12

I mean a upscale version like how they did 20 years back now the brand is known and has become popular

When they launched Initial Mayback it was a brand only known buy real car enthusiasts
Or perhaps something along the lines of the bespoke concepts presented that never materialized but brought into this decade, those are what they have to start defining themselves as a brand, or something unexpected as well would also be welcome.

I agree with the first two sentences.

The car needs to be bigger than the GLS, otherwise it’d be too cramped in the back.

The SUV must grow to 5.5m, the saloon to 5.8m, otherwise you have only one luxury seat in the back, which is nonsense for this class.

Regarding engines, this car needs big sized engines, 5L V8 Bi-Turbo and 7L V12 Bi-Turbo with low boost.

The current 4L is too boosty, it needs way to much revs to deliver the power. And it should be more muted.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
